Why was Master Chiefs Mjolnir Mark VI armor different in Halo 4? Or is it still the same and just designed differently. If it is changed what model is his armor.

  • It's still Mjolnir Mk. VI, we just don't know exactly how it was changed. It's implied and suggested that nanomachines aboard the Dawn were used. We do know that Cortana is responsible for the change though.

  • Mark VI had self-repairing nanomachines installed in it. Cortana used that feature to "rewrite his suit's firmware". But, canonically MC's new armor is unique to him and him alone, which is why the Mark VI armor available in Halo 4 and 5 is the normal Mark VI, not MC's custom set.

  • Halsey's retelling of the events during that cutscene are said to not be entirely accurate, as the Elites present in that cutscene are all wearing Storm-class harnesses, which hadn't been introduced until after the Human-Covenant war. However, Chief's custom armor is stated as being based off an older variant of the Mark IV armor, which is the best explanation of the reason that Halsey interprets that as the Chief's new armor, which she couldn't have known about at the time since Chief was presumed MIA at the end of Halo 3 and Halsey would not have seen his custom armor.

  • I don't think you'd need nanobots to adjust software.

  • Firmware. The suit design is what changed, not its software.

  • I think you're thinking of hardware mate, not firmware.

  • In context, Cortana is referring to the general overhaul of Chief's suit, as in both hardware and software.

  • Firmware is a type of software. It's how the software as a whole is able to interact with the hardware.
