Do you like English Dubs?
Personally I am not a fan, but I don't mean to/ want to preach... just wondering other peoples opinions.
My Opinion:
Its not that the English Dubs are bad, so much as, in my opinion, they pale in comparison to the Japanese Seiyuu. I tried watching FMA Brotherhood the other day on Dubs and just couldnt do it. Its like every word they say is perfectly enunciated and pleasant. But in reality, nobody talks like that. And all the detail in emotions and craziness and whatnot is lost.

3 RepliesI'll start with fair disclosure: I have done voice-overs. My voice has appeared on national TV and radio. In the interest of continuing to enjoy the anonymity of my on-line identity, I will not discuss the projects to which I contributed. I do read and speak some Japanese. I have family in Japan and have spent time around the Tokyo area, though I am not of Japanese descent. Due to my experience, I believe my opinion is biased. Speaking of my opinion: I usually prefer English dubs, except for very few properties like "The Irresponsible Captain Taylor" where I strongly prefer the original Japanese. Why? [i]More money and time are usually available to dub titles than was available for the original production[/i]. As such, higher quality sound effect kits are used, 2-channel audio gets remastered into 5.1 (and sometimes 6.1) surround, and higher-paid voice actors can be afforded, almost always with more humane production schedules. Whether you like the voice actors' performances or not, the rest of the audio production is often of a higher caliber. Some evidence of this is visible to you, in print, on the backs of many of the VHS and DVD imports of the time when this became the norm (circa 1998). I do enjoy my home theater, usually pretty loud because I love being immersed in great sound. This is only my opinion to an open question. Please don't troll me for expressing it.

5 RepliesI totally agree! The dub doesn't capture the emotions and raw feelings of the anime I only watch sub's way more fun to hear them say bagga(idiot) in Japanese!

I prefer dubs. Some do sound bad, but there are VA out there who really hit it out of the park. Crispin Freeman, Vic Mignonga, Johnny Yong Bosch are great examples of voice actors in America. I will however say that I will watch a show with whatever dub I start with. Can't listen to Hellsing jap dub after listening to eng dub, and vice versa to Squid Girl. Only if the dub is so bad it takes me out of the show would I switch over.

Honestly I watch the dubs if I'm feeling too lazy to read, but other than that subed is much better. You just don't get the full experience with dubs.

Edited by dist0rt: 1/15/2015 5:29:54 AMi dont like them at all. it just doesnt seem right, and when i talk about anime to my friends i always try to tell them that. english dubs feel cheesy and the japanese VAs are just so much better. i study japanese though, so im a bit bias and often dont use or need subs anymore either.

2 RepliesTrue, and you're right about the FMA as well. In my opinion, I like subbed more because I love to hear the Japanese language (and learn) while reading The sub (makes me feel like I'm reading a moving manga) but I don't mind dubbed as well. It's good but not in a good way.
