Part 3.5: Mysterious Plans
“What of the third fleet? Are they prepared to attack?” Asked a deep voice, speaking in the Fallen’s strange tongue.
“Yes sire, they are ready to launch a full-scale attack.” The dreg said, kneeling before the Kell.
“Do the other houses know of our plans…?”
“Only those allied with us, Sire.”
“Good… good… bring more reports like this and you may just earn your arms back…”
Part 4: Goodbyes
Today was like any other day. Matthew had already turned ten, and his Fallen friend, who Matthew learned his name was Saliks, could now speak fluent English, though still a bit shaky.
“This is how you put a Shock Pistol back together,” Saliks says, quickly putting each part of the small dismantled Fallen gun back together with his four arms. He wasn’t smiling as usual. At least not for a Fallen.
“The shock core goes here, where the trigger allows the current to pass through here, and then it discharges the arc bolt here.” Saliks continued, pointing to each important component in small gun.
Matthew could sense Saliks’ tension, “Saliks, is something wrong?” he asked, worry for his friend in his voice.
Saliks did the closest thing he could do for a sigh, a rattling noise from the bottom of his throat.
“Matthew, I’m-” He began, but was cut off by a female voice behind Matthew.
“M… Matthew…?”
Matthew slowly turned towards the voice, and his eyes widened to see his mother standing there, her hand over her mouth in shock at the sight of her son sitting down with a Fallen. Her gaze slowly turned to that of anger,
“Get away from my son!” She screeched, frantically drawing a pistol out of a holster on her hips. Saliks quickly put the Shock Pistol back together.
“Matthew, who is this?” Saliks asked, sounding more like a demand.
Time slowed down as Matthew stared in despair at his best friend and mother about to shoot each other.
“Stop!” Matthew screamed, coming between Saliks and his mother, who were now beginning to point their handguns at each other.
“Matthew get out of the way!” The Fallen boy and Matthew’s mother said in unison.
“Put both of your guns down!” Matthew yelled at both of them. After a long moment of tension, Saliks was the first to put his gun down to both Matthew’s and his mother’s surprise. Veronica followed in suit.
“Okay.” Matthew said, trying to sound as calm as possible.
“Saliks, this is Veronica, my mom, mom this is Saliks, my…” Matthew let out a long sigh.
“My best friend.”
“WHAT?!” Matthew’s mother screamed.
“Listen mom, let me explain.” Matthew said quickly, though his mother didn’t seem to hear him.
“HOW could you be best friends with this… this… BEAST?!”
“We’ve been hanging out for years now!”
“And THAT makes it BETTER?!”
“Mom, just hear me out, I-”
“I don’t want you seeing this THING anymore! From now on you are no longer allowed to go out of that wall!”
“But mom, I-”
He was then cut off by Saliks,
“I will no longer be seeing him anyways!” Saliks yelled.
“Matthew, I didn’t want to tell you like this, but I’m being drafted into the Fallen military.”
Matthew looked at Saliks in bewilderment,
“Saliks, I don’t understand, how-”
“While you’re away at what you call school, I've been training at a boot camp.”
Matthew’s eyes began to well with tears,
“But then that means…”
“We will no longer see each other from this point on.”
There was a long moment of silence between all three of them.
“Matthew… I’m… sorry.” Saliks said, breaking the silence.
He moved toward Matthew, and Veronica raised her handgun at the Fallen walking towards her son, but he simply kept moving. He embraced Matthew, who’s mouth was slack with shock, and his eyes clearly watering, waiting to break free into tears. Not long after, Matthew returned the hug, burying his face into the Fallen boy’s upper shoulder. This hug lasted for at least five? No, ten minutes. After that time, Saliks gently pushed his best friend away, not allowing tears to come to any of his four eyes.
Saliks turned and walked away from his long-time friend, and slowly headed over to the large fence that separated the last part of the wilderness from the wall. He waited at the top of the fence not that far away and stared at Matthew, to get one good look at his best friend before jumping down and going back to his outpost, soon to be transported back to his home.
