The picture quality on plasmas was, and remains, superior to anything else. Unfortunately that quality comes at the risk of image retention or even burn-in. It's a tough trade-off to make.
As for their discontinuance, it's cheaper for the vendors to make LCD or LED units. That quality is lost does much matter to most of the folks buying TVs. For folks that know better it's an unfortunate passing of an era.
Meanwhile it'd be trivial to allow for HUD transparency options.
