It was a stasis cell meant for induced meditation as a punishment. The Didact's ball is his Cryptum. Though he appears to be able to influence the outside world through the Cryptum, even when he was in meditation.

Cryotube, but more advanced
-
Not at all. Cryotubes work by freezing your cells, stopping them from functioning, and consequently aging. Cryptums involve a stasis of sorts. Whether through draining your body of all liquids and preserving your body, or through slipspace.

I wasn't talking technical this post, but yes, you're absolutely right

Cryptums are sarcophagus like devices that preserve a Forerunner as he or she resides in the timeless state of xankara. They are most associated with the Warrior-Servants and Prometheans, as after the Didact's political disgrace, many Warrior-Servants were exiled to Cryptums, including the Didact.

Are there any other War-Servants that could possibly be in Cryptums?
-
Of course. It's just up to 343i to make it canon.
