The Greater Ark produced Halos at 30,000km in diameter that could fire laterally. It was destroyed when Mendicant Bias lead the Gravemind to it. The Lesser Ark is the one we see in Halo 3. It was a well guarded secret, one that Mendicant Bias couldn't reach in time due to Offensive Bias' actions.
