Tokyo Ghoul - Bakemonogatari meets Deadman Wonderland... what do you think?

I just watched the first two episodes of Tokyo Ghoul and its pretty awesome so far. Struck me as kind of like Bakemonogatari meets Deadman Wonderland. Deadman Wonderland had the weak lead with superpower that was always getting annihilated and bloodied up, but more than that, I thought theTokyo Ghoul reminded me a lot of the artwork and the darkness that was borderline horror. I actually really enjoyed Deadman Wonderland despite its weak backstory and fairly weak story progression, mostly cause it was just put together so well and the art was so good.. voice acting was good, the actual execution was just really good. I know a lot of people didn't like it and it obviously wasn't successful since it only got one season, but I really enjoyed it- am I on my own on this one? haha. Bakemonogtari is probably the most unique anime I have ever seen, a total oddball. Still though, there is something about Tokyo Ghoul that seems similar. The sort of disjointed telling of the story, all the questions left open, the peek into supernatural... the first episode didn't remind me of it at all, but the whole sequence where that guy attacks Hide and Kaneki lashes out to defend him but ends up suffering his own desire to eat... the sudden switch from perfectly saturated colours in the art to a kind of sketch-book look.. that whole scene reminded me of Bakemonogatari... again I might be on my own here, thoughts? As soon as that scene came on, I realized that the organ-donor/binge-eater girl was the same seiyuu in both Bakemonogatari (probably my favourite female character ever: Senjougahara) and Deadman Wonderland (shiro.. ? I think that was her character name). I thought I would kickoff the anime discussion...

I didn't particularly like Deadman Wonderland or Bakemonogatari. Deadman Wonderland was good throughout most of the show, but it just gave me no closure at the end. I know the manga went on for a lot longer than the anime, but the people who adapted it should have found a way to end it better so that even without a second season it would feel somewhat complete. Tokyo Ghoul was pretty decent, I didn't like the ending, but at least it's getting a second season so maybe it'll work out.

    • Honestly, I loved DW. Although you're right about how weak the storyline is. I honestly MUCH preferred the Manga
