Attention: This is my first fanfic, so constructive criticism is always welcome, as well as know the time system follows pre-Golden age time as to not confuse readers (1 year= 3 years post-Golden Age). I will be releasing a new part/chapter every other day.
Prologue:
The boy and his parents were running down the street, buildings flaming behind them. The Fallen had attacked another part of the city, and were now raiding district 22, the boy’s home only two districts away from the wall that holds the wilderness at bay.
“Keep running Matthew!” The boy’s father yelled.
His legs were burning in pain. Just then, the boy’s father turned to look over his shoulder.
“Veronica, watch ou-” It was too late.
Behind him, the young man heard a scream of pain. His mother had fallen to the ground, her back steaming. The arc bolt had scorched her skin and left her twitching. His father attempted to pick her up, but there was a flash of blue light just behind the boy’s father. His father, too, fell onto the hard concrete, his back steaming alongside the boy’s mother. “Matthew… Run…” His father wheezed. A Fallen Vandal had stepped over the now twitching bodies, and both the Fallen’s and the boy’s eyes widened
Part 1: Childhood
“Can’t catch me!” The six-year-old boy screeched with delight. The small insectoid creature ran after him, making high-pitched sound similar to that of a child’s laugh. The two seemed to be playing tag. One ran after the other, though the small four-armed creature was a bit faster than the human child. This play session went on for hours until a man’s voice echoed from inside the tall wall that separated the city from the Cosmodrome.
“Matthew, where are you?!” the man’s voice called.
“Quick, hide!” Matthew told his alien friend. The Fallen nodded and quickly dived behind a large rock.
“There you are Matthew! Your mother and I were worried sick!” The boy’s father said, crawling out from under a small hole in the wall, blocked off by a loose grate.
“Sorry dad, I was just playing.” Matthew said in an apologetic tone.
“What are we going to do with you Matthew? You know this place is dangerous.” The father shook his head, and then scratched the back of his neck.
“C’mon, it almost dinner time, and it’s getting late.”
Matthew wanted to play with his friend more, but he had to go. The small Fallen child peaked two of his four eyes out of cover, watching the boy leave with sadness. Matthew looked behind his shoulder and waved good-bye to his four-armed friend. They would meet again tomorrow.
Matthew’s father went in first into the hole, avoiding the water that drained out, and then Matthew joined him as well.
“What do you like so much about the wilderness?” The boy’s father asked him.
“It’s nice and open.” The small child said, content with keeping his friend a secret. The young child had been friends with the fallen child for a few weeks now, and had been able to keep him a secret all that time.
“So is the city.”
“But the city is way too busy.” The boy complained. The father gave a small laugh.
“I suppose so. Wait here, I found the exit.”
The boy’s father turned around and kicked out the loose grate, the boy’s usual entrance and exit from the city. They both crawled out, and were immediately greeted by bushes, hiding the hole in the wall. The man stood up and brushed himself off.
