1st let me start by saying I'm an xbox one player so never had 1st hand experience with hawkmoon. I don't have issues with hawkmoon can't wait for it to be added to xbox. My problem is these so called "best weapons of destiny" hawkmoon and other playstation exclusive gun are on this list. If your truely ranking "guns of destiny" you cannot include weapons that are only on half half the platforms that the game is played on. The game does not only exist in the playstation world nor in the xbox world.
That being said how can you rank hawkmoon higher or better than thorn? You cannot do that without excluding half the players. According to the stats the thorn can compete damage wise. Hawkmoon has larger clip and higher rate of fire. Thorn has farther range and better accuracy (depending on user). All info taken into review (for current weapons), and the fact that thorn is on all ALL platforms in my opinion
THORN IS BETTER THAN hawkmoon
Objectively speaking, Hawkmoon is better than Thorn in every stat except rate of fire. Seriously, it's pretty much a freak of nature with those imbalanced base stats. All handcannons have the same base raw dps(damage/RoF), but both Thorn and Hawkmoon have barrel impact upgrades which let them go above that, so they're kinda tied. But, Hawkmoon has the highest base stat values for every side stat except range, where it loses out to Fatebringer by a very slim margin. For the perks, Hawkmoon has Hammer Forged, Speed Reload and Quickdraw as well as 2 perks that give it a total of 3 lucky rounds that deal 33% bonus damage. Thorn has perfect balance, snapshot and send it in addition to final round and its famous DoT and overpenetration. Let's say we're dealing with a high hp single target. While Thorn's DoT means that it packs more punch in a single normal shot, it doesn't stack so it's more like there's a persistent DoT throughout the duration you're hitting the target. The average reload speed and magazine size of Thorn coupled with Thorn being in the fast firing handcannon archetype unfortunately deals a great blow to thorn's effective dps. It empties its clip faster due to high RoF, so the time spent reloading is high in proportion to the time spent shooting. Hawkmoon has the largest HC magazine size in the game at 13 rounds and a ugh reload speed, so there's less reloading to be done. Additionally, the time spent reloading can be further cut down with speed reload, increasing the time you spend shooting instead of reloading and improving effective dps. From experience I'd say that the Hawkmoon's larger magazine size, lucky rounds and faster reload grant it greater dps output than Thorn with its DoT. For mobs of enemies it's a toss-up. Thorn's overpenetrating rounds are definitely useful against bunched up enemies, but Hawkmoon's larger mag size lets it sustain a longer chain of kills. I'd say that both are great in pve, but Hawkmoon is better overall than Thorn as it is a better general purpose weapon. Of course, that doesn't mean that Hawkmoon should always be used over Thorn. In the first CE stage for instance, I find thorn more useful for its overpenetration against the huge thrall horde, giving 2 kills for every of Hawkmoon's kills. Regrettably I missed Xur when he sold the Hawkmoon upgrade, so I can't comment on whether both handcannons are able to one shot thrall maxed out
Also, I'd like to add that attainability isn't a good factor to rank weapons with. Otherwise we'd just be ranking green weapons better than legendaries in crucible.

Edited by CJBulldogs: 1/4/2015 12:03:40 PMHawkmoon is better get over it...I have both at 331 and like them both but there is no hesitation when choosing which one to use. Hawkmoon is a superior weapon at almost every stat and the 3 extra DMG bullets make it insane. The DoT and over penetrating rounds are meh in PvE but good in PvP for thorn. Lucky rounds kill targets instead of put a DoT on them so they are a far superior perk. I see you posting alot on the Dattos tier list and now have found you to be annoying. You are upset that he rated the thorn below hawkmoon and you think he's bias because wait for it...its HIS list meaning its his opinion so ya bias is used duh. Go get popular and you make a list that we care about reading and then you can be bias on the thorn and rate it higher. You are a hypocrite though while complaing about his opinion being biased you are even MORE so since you don't even have hawkmoon. And as you can see the majority of players put hawkmoon higher because guess what....it is better

You've never used the glorious Hawkmoon so that's why you would say Thorn is better. Thorn can compete with Hawkmoon but with better dps, bigger clip, and Hawkmoon feeling like a mini sniper, Hawkmoon is the winner. Thorn is really good and can keep shields down, but I'd take my Hawkmoon over thorn any day

Hawkmoon has three bullets that do bonus damage, has less fire rate but more range. You got the stats mixed round. Anyway, hawkmoon also has more impact and is like having a pocket sniper.

I've wanted Hawkmoon almost as much as I wanted Thorn. Still, no Hawkmoon for me yet. But Thorn is my "gun of the game" so far. I use all my weapons for specific purposes but Thorn is my constant. If I ever get lucky enough to own Hawkmoon it's going to be very hard for to that crown. But if it does, you know who really wins?.. We do.

I don't know which is better but I like them both. Hawkmoon feels like a pocket sniper rifle and Thorn stops shields from regenerating and is hilarious to use in PvP. The Last Word beats them both in close quarters in PvP but falls behind them both in PvE. They each have their uses. I'm just glad that all of the exotic hand cannons are great.
