That's what I don't get. He's been trained since 6 years old to serve the UNSC. A spartan does not simply go AWOL. 343 better have a damn good reason for it.

Well, he's sort of been rattled to the core recently. He disobeyed orders for the first time in his 30+ year military career, lost his best friend who wasn't militarily trained in any form, and has faced certain death two days in a row.
