Hello world! I am a proud member of DoD Beyond (ps3 clan) and am here to share some info that I wish I had when I first started playing. This is a copy / pasta of a thread I made for our clan's forum. Many of you already know some / most /all /more then this. If you have updates or revisions, or simply more info to add, please post it and I will give you full credit in the post. Without further ado.
Good Resources

http://destinypublicevents.com/ Good way to find upcoming Public Events
http://destinytracker.com/ Good way to get more details on another player (or yourself)
http://planetdestiny.com/ Great source of info, gear reviews and has a full Database to look up items
Terms I use in this Guide
Tier 1 Enemy - These are the typical enemies you run into everywhere. They have red health bars and you do full damage per shot.
Tier 2 Enemy - These are yellow health bar enemies, your body shots do full damage but precision shots only do a max of 150% base instead of up to 300%.
Factions - These are Future War Cult (FWC), New Monarchy (NM) and Dead Orbit (DO)
Different Kinds of Currencies
Glimmer - Capped at 25,000. This is used to buy perks on gear and ammo synthesis from the Gunsmith. Well, mainly. Glimmer is the only currency shared across multiple characters on the same account.
---------- (A) There is a way to get around the 25K Cap. Tier II mobs have a chance to drop an item that can be turned into the Cryptarch for 200 glimmer per. Just hoard these and cash them in as necessary.
Vanguard Marks - You get these for completing Public Events and from Strike Playlists. Used to buy Weapons and Armor from the Vanguard Vendors. You can get 100 per week and hold 200 max at any one time.
Crucible Marks - You get these from the Crucible only. Used to buy weapons and armor from the Faction and Crucible Vendors. You can get 100 per week and hold 200 max at any one time.
Motes of Light - You get these from engrams and from "leveling up" after you hit rank 20. Used to buy Exotic Engrams from Xur, vanity items from the Speaker, and is used in some Exotic Bounties. *Update: Xur information. Thanks DanOate38*
Strange Coins - Used to buy Exotic pieces from Xur, also used in some Exotic bounties.
Commendations - Used to buy Expansion 1 Weapons, Chest and Helmets from the vendors. Obtained from rank 3 and up gift baskets.
How Do I Get Legendary Armor
You can get Legendary Armor from Engrams, Rank up gift baskets, Crucible and Strikes, Chests and the Raids.
Blue Engrams: These will give you Legendary gear very rarely (3% or less chance). This can be Launch or Expansion 1 gear.
Purple Engrams: These will give you Legendary gear, or Assendant Shards/Energy. This can be Launch or Expansion 1 gear.
Rank up gift baskets: In my experience you get a Legendary piece of gear about 40% of the time from the respective Vendor's stock, perks will be random. This will be Expansion 1 gear.
Crucible and Strikes: Upon completion of a Roc Strike (level 26) or any Crucible match, you have a slight chance of a Legendary or better piece of gear. This will be Launch or Expansion 1 gear.
Chests: Very rarely will you receive a Legendary piece of gear from a non-Raid chest. Can be Launch or Expansion 1 gear.
Raids: Vault of Glass encounters will give you Launch Legendary gear but Expansion 1 Exotics, Crota's End will give you Expansion 1 gear exclusively.
The Difference Between Launch and Expansion 1 Gear
Look in the upper right hand corner of the icon for that piece of gear, do you see a little Roman Numeral ( I )? If so it is Expansion 1, which has higher damage (weapon) or higher Light level (armor). All Faction vendors currently sell Expansion 1 gear exclusively, but they do not have the little roman numeral on the icon. (Besides the Speaker, who sells only vanity items)
How Exotics Work, and What They Are
You are allowed to equip only 1 Exotic Armor piece and 1 Exotic Weapon at any time.
Dismantling an Exotic piece (weapon or armor) will give you an Exotic Shard. If an Exotic Weapon has maxed exp (no need to buy perks, just unlock them all) then you can get 2 Exotic shards from Dismantling it commonly. Sometimes you will only get 1 Shard.
You need 1 Exotic Shard to max any Exotic.
You can buy Exotic Shards from Xur each weekend for 7 Strange Coins.
New Vendor Armor
The new vendor armor will take you up to level 31 whereas the old will take you to a max of level 29.
Vendor Boots: 75 Marks
Vendor Gloves: 75 Marks
Vendor Chest: 75 Marks + 1 Commendation
Vendor Helmet: 120 Marks + 1 Commendation
How to get Commendations
You will get 1 Commendation with the rank up gift basket upon reaching rank 3 with the respective Faction, Vanguard or Crucible.
Vanguard faction will give you Vanguard Commendations.
Crucible faction will give you Crucible Commendations.
Dead Orbit, Future War Cult and New Monarchy will give you Crucible Commendations commonly. You will occasionally not receive one. (unknown if this is a bug)
How to Upgrade Gear
To reach max you need upgrade materials. You need Glimmer, Weapon Parts *for weapons only*, Class specific parts *for armor only* and Planetary materials. The last 3 Increase Damage / Armor perks on all Legendary gear also need either Ascendant Energy (weapons) or Shards (armor). Expansion 1 Raid Armor requires Radiant Materials, which only come from Crota's End Raid encounters + Chests, or from dismantling Crota's End Raid Armor or Weapons.
How to Get Upgrade Materials
Glimmer - Many sources.
Weapon Parts - Dismantle any Uncommon (green) weapon or higher. You get more parts if your weapon has unlocked some perks on it. You do not need to buy any upgrades, just unlock them.
Class Specific Materials - You get these for Dismantling any Uncommon (green) or higher piece of armor. What class item you get is specific to the equipable class of the item. To wit; if a Warlock Dismantles a piece of Titan gear, that Warlock will get Titan specific class materials. Again, the more perks you have unlocked on that piece of armor, the more class materials you get.
Planetary Materials - Spinmetal (Earth), Helium Fragments (Moon), Spirit Bloom (Venus) and Relic Iron (Mars). The first Upgrade Damage / Armor perk requires 8 of these, each additional perk requires 16. You can get these either by farming them on their respective planets. Links to good farming runs at the end of this post.
Ascendant mats can be found in Legendary Engrams, Rank up gift baskets, Chests, Raids, Public Events or from deconstructing Legendary gear.
Legendary Engrams: 2-3 Mats
Rank up gift baskets: 1-3 Mats
Chests: 2-3 Mats (usually only in Raids, otherwise very rare)
Raids: 2-3 Mats per encounter
Public Events: Chance of 1 Mat upon completing a Public Event with 3 gold stars.
Deconstructing Legendary Gear: 2-3 (OR) 5-6
To get the maximum amount of mats from deconstructing weapons, get the max amount of exp possible on the weapon, When you unlock the last perk (note you do not have to buy any perks, just unlock them) you will get 5-6 Energy instead of 2-3 Energy from deconstructing it.
How Many Upgrade Mats Do You Need
To upgrade a Launch Legendary you need 18 Ascendant Mats
To upgrade an Expansion 1 Legendary you need 18 Ascendant Mats
To upgrade an Expansion 1 Raid piece you need 21 Radiant Mats
How Much Light to Level
Effectively you need exactly 12 Light for each level past 20, It works slightly differently in practice however. Edit: thanks Kevlarproof
How this works is that you need 21 Light to reach level 21, 11 Light for levels 22-30, and 12 Light for levels 31 and 32.
Level 21 - 21 Light
Level 22 - 32 Light
Level 23 - 43 Light
Level 24 - 54 Light
Level 25 - 65 Light
Level 26 - 76 Light
Level 27 - 87 Light
Level 28 - 98 Light
Level 29 - 109 Light
Level 30 - 120 Light
Level 31 - 132 Light
Level 32 - 144 Light
What is X Armor's Light Level
Launch Legendary - 27 Light
Launch Exotic - 30 Light
Launch Raid Armor - 30 Light
Expansion 1 Legendary - 33 Light
Expansion 1 Exotic - 36 Light
Expansion 1 Raid Armor - 36 Light
How Do I Reach X Level
Just add up the light level. For each level above 20 you need 12 Light. For quick reference:
To reach level 29 you need: 4x Launch Legendary Armor
To reach level 30 you need: 3x Launch Raid Armor and 1 Launch Exotic (or) 4x Launch Raid Armor
To reach level 31 you need: 4x Expansion 1 Legendary Armor
To reach level 32 you need: 3x Expansion 1 Raid Armor and 1 Expansion 1 exotic (or) 4x Launch Raid Armor
How Levels Affect Damage
http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2h9t6b/this_is_how_light_levels_affect_your_gameplay_and/
This is ONLY PvE. The Crucible is normalized, which means that higher levels mean pretty much nothing.
How to Farm Glimmer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVHfwukdc14
You must do this on Heroic for the Tier II Legionaries to appear. You must use Resupply Codes (Cabal Glimmer Consumable) to increase the amount of glimmer from 25 to 46 per kill. You can also kill the first drop ship of spawns for slightly more glimmer per run, although you actually earn less that way as it is faster to just kill the Tier II Legonaries. Doing this I net about 3k Glimmer per 10 minutes or roughly 18k Glimmer per hour, plus glimmer turn in drops.

*** Addendum #1 *** Wow, I managed to hit the 10,000 character limit on that post. Here is the overflow: How to Reset Heroic Story Missions Select the Story Mission you want by hitting the SQUARE button, then when selecting the Difficulty, hit the SQUARE button AGAIN. A pop up box will ask if you want to restart the mission. It works similarly on Xbox. Material Farming Guide http://planetdestiny.com/material-farming/ Videos on how to farm each kind of Planetary Material, as well as some other basic farming guides. How to Open the Vault of Glass Solo - Any Class https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVkb2Y8yXr4 This can be used to get some free Ascendants each week. Crotas End - 1st Chest Solo - Any Class https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TojU28CHoFg You will most likely NOT get this chest the first time. There are something like 10 different rooms that the chest could be in, which one it is in is random. Each time you wipe the chest jumps to another room. It may take 3 tries, it may take 30. Pray to RNGeebus. Crotas End - Thall Abyss (Darkness, Lamps) Solo - Warlock, Titan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYKqOQNpTww You can use a Sniper Rifle to kill the Knight. And use a Sniper Rifle to kill the Ogre if you do not have Gjallahorn. Crotas End - Thrall Abyss (Darkness, Lamps) Solo - Hunter Invisibility Method https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l58MrBk4L1I In a nutshell: Invis to each lamp, jump on top, invis to next lamp.

Good point.. you care of I sticky this up top?

Nice for people just getting there or even for those trying to get those final levels. . Allot of work put into this.

*** Addendum #2 *** People see stats on a weapon, or a perk on armor that appears to be great but in reality just works out to be kind of meh. I will try to provide numbers so you know actually what a perk does, how it affects your chosen playstyle is something that only you can discover. Please note that everything here is for PvE. In the Crucible (excluding Iron Banner to some extent) everything is Normalized. That is defense and attack do not matter. Level modifiers are also disabled. All that matters is Impact, Weapon Type and the perks on each individual weapon. *** Common Weapon Perks: What they are and What they do *** This webpage Here has a list of most if not all of the available weapon perks, and what they do with percentages. Some notable ones to shoot for: Outlaw. Arguably the best reload perk. 150% reload speed for 3 seconds after a precision kill. Firefly. Precision kills cause target to explode. Good for killing Tier I enemies in close spaces. Final Round. Situational but good. Gives 33% extra damage on the final round in a magazine. On a Sniper rifle this can cause a 1 hit kill by a body shot in the Crucible. Xen Moment. Causing damage increases stability. Stacks 5 times for up to a 66% increase. Third Eye - Radar stays up while ADS (Aim Down Sights). This is best for PvP but it is always good to know what is going on around you. Field Scout - This increases your magazine to max capacity and also gives a bonus to reserve ammo and increases the amount of ammo you get per box lying on the ground. Some notable ones to stay away from: Mulligan. Gives you a 5% chance ( or 1 in 20 rounds ) of having a missed shot return to the magazine. Vacuum. Doubles ammo pickup radius Life Support: If you go below 20% health and get a kill you get a 150% bonus to reload speed and it refills your magazine. This is bad because at less then 20% health you will normally seek cover and reload. Buffing reload speed is pointless if you are sitting in cover for 3-4 times the normal length of your weapons reload while waiting on your health to refill. *** Common Armor Perks *** With one exception, armor perks do not stack. That one exception is Increase Primary Weapon Ammo (type specific). For example if you have "Increase Auto Rifle Ammo" on two pieces of equipment then those will stack. Special weapon ammo will not stack. Heavy weapon ammo will not stack. Every other type of armor perk will not stack. Weapon perks do stack with armor perks. For example Increase Scout Rifle Reload Speed does stack with reload perks on your weapon. Increase Heavy Weapon Ammo will stack with extra ammo perks on your weapon. Increase Weapon Ammo works by giving you extra magazines of ammunition. For example; Increase Handcannon Ammo seems to give you 2 extra magazines worth of reserve ammo. Some notable ones which are common Increase Melee Attack Speed - This gives about 14% increased attack speed. It comes on Helmets and Gloves, both give the same bonus. And it does NOT stack. Increased Grenade Throw Distance - This gives your grenades more forward velocity, resulting in longer throw distances. Remember - grenades ALSO inherit your momentum so a grenade thrown while running goes further then one thrown while walking then one thrown while standing still. Bonus Melee Energy on Grenade Hits - gives 3% per hit with an internal cooldown of 6 seconds. Bonus Grenade Energy on Melee Hit - gives 6% per hit with a short internal cooldown. Bonus Super Energy for Killing Minions of the Darkness - gives 5% more super energy then you would have gotten without it. Bonus Super Energy for Grenade Kills - 7% more super energy then you would have gotten without it. Some notable ones which are situational Health regeneration upon picking up Orbs of Light - This is good in the Crota encounter in Crota's End Hard Mode and pretty poor everywhere else. Remember that you need to actually pick up the Orb, if you have a full super bar this perk will not activate when running over an Orb. Some notable ones which are bad Bonus Melee / Grenade Energy on Orb Pickup - You get a flat 6% energy bonus upon picking up an orb. Note that you need to actually pick up the Orb to get the bonus, which will not happen if you have a full super bar. ***Some More Weapon Information*** Side by Side Comparison of all Weapons In Game (no perks) All Vendor Version Weapon Perks List of "best" vendor weapons by category (currently attainable). Note this is only my opinion. Autorifle: Vanquisher VIII (New Monarchy) Why? Best Impact, Good Perks. ---- Non-Faction version: Up For Anything (Vanguard) Why? 2nd best Impact. Scout Rifle: Saterienne Rapier (Crucible) Why? Best perks, great stats. Handcannon: TFWPKY 1969 (Crucible) Why? Best all around. Pulse Rifle: Three Little Words (Crucible) Why? Because it has more then 300% of the Impact of the next highest 331 Pulse Rifle (excluding Red Death, an Exotic) Sniper Rifle: You can go with either LDR 5001 (Vanguard) or Y-09 Longbow Synthesis (Crucible). Both are about the same, but the vendor version of LDR5001 is much better then the Longbow. Fusion Rifle: Murmur (Eris Morn Quest). Hands down. Why? Choice between 2 damage types (Solar and Arc), great charge rate, fantastic impact. Shotgun: I would go with Two to the Morgue(Crucible). Why? Um, because I think it handles better. I would rather have an experienced PvPer's opinion on this one as my opinion is more of a WAG then anything. Rocket Launcher: One Way Ticket 000 (Vanguard). Why? 2 rockets and cluster bombs. I wish it had tracking. Machine Gun: Against All Odds(Crucible) Why? It has the highest Impact, at the cost of the lowest RoF. This is mainly a playstyle choice but if you get one of these with Field Scout (50 round magazine) then you can kill 25 Guardians in the crucible with one magazine (assuming all headshots). Absolutely wrecks in PvE as well. *** Stats on Weapons. What they are and what they do. *** VISIBLE STATS Attack Higher attack allows your weapons to damage higher-level opponents. This stat modifies the Impact stat when you are higher or lower level than your target (reducing or increasing damage). Rate of Fire The number of shots per minute this weapon can fire. The higher the number the faster your gun will eject bullets or less time needed between trigger pulls (on semi-autos) Impact Increases the damage inflicted by each round. This stat is modified by Attack, your character level vs. the level of the target you are shooting at, the range of the target vs. your weapon's Range and the target's Defense. Range Increase the effective range of the weapon. This stat determines the distance that your shots hit for 100% damage before they begin falling-off to 50% damage. Range also affects the minimum and maximum size of your “bloom” circle when hip-firing. Fusion Rifles don't suffer damage fall-off, but instead Range determines the speed of the projectile fired from these guns. (Note: Sights play a vital role in determining damage by increasing the Range of your weapon while aiming. Each Sight has a Range multiplier) Stability Decreases weapon recoil when fired continuously. This makes your character move less when firing so you can hit the same target repeatedly. Reload Decreases the time it takes to reload this weapon. The higher the value the faster you reload your gun. It is important to note that each type of gun has its own base reload speed and that the bar you are seeing is moving from 1-100% of the fastest you can reload THAT weapon type. Magazine The number of shots that can be fired before reloading. Each gun has its own magazine size and some are larger or smaller than others. Note that you can increase the bar from 1-100% of the amount of ammo you can carry for THAT weapon. Charge Rate (Fusion Rifles only) Rate at which the weapon charges. The higher the number the faster your Fusion Rifle charges before firing. Blast Radius (Rocket Launchers only) Increases the explosion radius of this weapon. Blast damage falls-off from the center of the explosion outward. The higher this value the more damage enemies will take when not being hit directly by the blast. Velocity (Rocket Launchers only) Increases the speed of projectiles fired by this weapon. This is the speed at which your rockets travel to their target.

I just noticed that there is a small piece of information that is incorrect on here. Light level is slightly off. It's 21 points for level 21 and then 11 points for each level after. Only level 31 and 32 require 12 points. Other than that I think this is super helpful. Wish I would have had it before I had to find this all out the hard way.

Bump to help the new DoDers

I appreciate this very much. I was reading it yesterday and did not have a chance to favorite it, when the little miss got fussy and I was not able to find the post again. Glad I found it. Bravo good sir. Bravo.
