Never exploited Crota as I've heard it's a ban-worthy offence and I've received only three shards. Myth-busted.
Also, do you think there could really be a system to weed out exploiters and give them worse rewards? It's out of the question for he developers, impossible.

I´m a professional programmer and nothing could be more easy in this case, they have already setup a variable "swords used" which you can see in your stats if you die during crota.
