I'm still annoyed about Song of Saya *SPOILERS*

WARNING *SPOILERS* You may read until the section marked with two pairs of spoiler warnings It's been more than a few months since I read the VN but it bothers me so much when I read something good only to be disappointed somewhere along the line. I feel like I've been kicked in the nuts and I didn't even get a fair shake. Allow me to first explain what a VN is, what kind of story SOS is, and some of the basic plot. WHAT IS A VN? A visual novel. From my experience reading SOS, a visual novel is a sequence of pictures with text on each page. When you're done with one page, you click to read/see the next one. It's kind of like reading a comic or graphic novel but only it's digitalized. WHAT IS SOS LIKE? As far as VNs go, Song of Saya is -blam!-ed up to say the least. Brutality, pedophilia, and as without any sense of justice as A Serbian Film. There's also a lot of blood and guts but to be honest, it's an amazing story with characters that you can grow attached to and a very interesting/creative narrative. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be angry, you'll be mystified, you'll be amazed, you'll be aroused. You'll share deep, intrapersonal moments with characters that exist only in writing and rendition. You'll wish you could pop into the story and say "NO JOHNNY DON'T DO IT!!" It's also styled after anime. WHAT IS SOS ABOUT? It's about one Fuminori - a fairly likeable young man that suffers a near-fatal car accident, -blam!-ing with his head and making him see the world and everything in it as a freakish mass of flesh and tentacles. He's both alone in this world and he isn't. One one side, Fuminori is the only visible human that he can see. What he imagines to be his friends are all foul creations that he wouldn't want to smell, touch, or even talk to. The only saving grace is a mysterious young girl that surprisingly looks human. She is the only one that he can talk to or relate to or even bare. And then they have kinky sex. On the other side of the rainbow, the world is quite normal and Fuminori is acting weird among his friends. What the hell's up with this guy? Why has he been dissing us? He's just getting worse and worse and some of the things he says are unforgivable. Soon, some of the things he does will also be unforgivable. WARNING *SPOILERS* WARNING *SPOILERS* From here on in, I give away important plot details including twists and endings. I advise you to read the story first. Right, then that I was disappointed when the story reached a certain point and allowed me an choice. Give Fuminori his normal vision back or keep it the way it is and see how deep the rabbit hole goes. Although I really wanted things to just be normal again, I decided to leave his head -blam!-ed up and see where the story went. I was so impressed with the journey that I simply couldn't wait to see what kind of alternate reality it would be if he had instead seen things normally again. I re-read the entire story again up to this point, took a quick bathroom break and made a sammich before choosing the decision - extra-cheese of course, and then clicked that bitch as hard as I could. What resulted is this - Fuminori pisses his pants (metaphorically), gets arrested, and then sobs for the rest of his days that things could've been different. FFFFUUUUUUUUU- That was a decision that I MADE. ME! I'M the one who wanted to see the man be FREE and see how he reacts to Saya when he sees her as a hideous monster. I wanted to see how he reacts when his friends catch up to him. I wanted to see if he could ever live with himself for all the bad shit he did and said. Instead it's just him sitting in a cell, whining about wanting to be with Saya again. Dude, did I not just -blam!-ing CHOOSE to have his vision returned to normal? Why did you even give me a -blam!-ing option? The second thing that disappointed me was both the endings being too brief and the two "true" endings being too closely intertwined instead of branching out more and exploring things we've never seen before. Instead it's the same carbon-copy sequence of events unfolding in ever so slightly different ways. You're one of Fuminori's old friends and you just found the remains of your girlfriend in his refrigerator. You know where Fuminori is. You can either go in by yourself and attempt to beat his brains in or you can be smart and go get backup from the only one who knows how to stop him. Basically it's a choice of which character you'd rather see die in the end. Maybe it's not too bad but I wish the two choices diverged the story more. Finally, I'm still aggravated that Saya, as pure-hearted as she was - that she was completely unopinionated about Fuminori's assholery. Fuminori killed his friends, he ate them, he hid their bodies, he lied to them, he mocked them, and he doesn't give a shit. All he does is worship Saya. I was expecting her to put a stake through his heart, especially after he said the reason he allows himself to kill his friends is because they look like monsters. Not only is that a -blam!-ed up thing to say but Saya is a monster herself. That's why Fuminori sees her as a human, ironically. How is all of this completely overlooked? It's not even acknowledged in the story. Saya might as well be completely oblivious. Instead, she blindly loves the guy. It's painful to watch. Song of Saya, I still love it for its characters and its creative narrative but damn does its flaws make my blood boil.

Why did you even give me a -blam!-ing option?
The option holds significance because it shows that Fuminori had a choice between going back to normal or staying with Saya. And while technically you are the one actually choosing, you are still playing as Fuminori. The reason it doesn't go on and on is simply because the VN is meant to be a single, contained story. Branching off and going in an entire different direction would detract from the story they wanted to tell. At the end of the day the ending does what it's supposed to: show what would have happened had Fuminori turned his back on Saya. It showed us how truly attached he was to her and how he couldn't forget her. Hell, she's the one who instigated most of that stuff, and a large chunk of the things Fuminori did to his friends were to protect Saya and make sure they can stay together. If you seriously think she would care that Fuminori treats his friends like shit, you don't understand her character at all. The only thing she wanted was for Fuminori to love her, so why would she betray him? To your point about Fuminori saying he can kill his friends because they look like monsters: Saya is well aware of what she is. And she also loves Fuminori to the point where she believes he would never treat her in the same fashion.
