This is should be a short and sweet summary of Attack and it's role in your total Damage. Many people are still unaware of how this stat works and I imagine there will be an influx of confused new comers. (inb4 this post is lost in the sea of quality posts)
Impact is essentially your weapons base damage, this is important because Attack works as a multiplier.
The estimated equation for this process is (Attack/15), so for example we have a Fate bringer with an Attack rating of 300.
300/15=20
The significance of 20 will be explained shortly!
300 Attack Fatebringer deals 765 damage criticals to level 10 Red HP bar enemies.
300 Attack Fatebringer deals 1505 damage criticals to level 20 Red HP bar enemies.
300 Attack Fatebringer deals 1505 damage criticals to level 28/29/30 Red HP bar enemies.
(Hypothetical) 350 Attack Fatebringer deals 1851 damage criticals to enemies level 23 and above. (It still deals the same amount of damage to level 20's as it did when it had 300 attack because 20 is under the new cap of 350/15=23.)
The following numbers are approximations.
If Fatebringer had an attack rating of 285, it would deal the same amount of damage to the level 10, but it would deal less damage to the level 20 and 30, approximately 7% less damage. (Or if you wanted to look at it the other way around for every 15 attack you do 7% more damage.) This is because (285/15=19) the damage of a 285 attack weapon caps out at level 19.
Attack/15 gives you the level at which your weapons damage caps out, that's why a weapon with 300 Attack does the same amount of damage to a level 20 as it does a 30, as it does a 31, as it does a 32 etc.
TL;DR: For every 15 attack you deal approximately 7% more damage, damages caps out at Attack/15.
If you've got any questions feel free to ask, if you disagree feel free to bring it up.
Reply/Bump/Up, I'm sure we'll be seeing this question soon, and many people still don't know how this works.
Edit: Forgot about the boobs guys, ( . Y . ) ayyyyyy.
-
So your saying a 331 Mythoclast and a 323 Mythoclast would be doing about the same damage? Oh and more boobs ( . Y . )
-
thank you to loose some time to inform us, nice math it also match perfectly with numbers that we see every time, the " /15 " is the most usefull info to choose the better weapon for every situation

Edited by Votable: 1/2/2015 8:32:21 AMSo are 300 weapons still worth it? On my level 31 Titan anyways Lacking in non exotic primaries & was thinking of bringing out Fatebringer or continue using Vision of Confluence.
-
I asked people about this stat before, and sadly still didn't get it right. Does it make a difference against enemies of levels above your own? I suppose Light level matters more than Attack then?
-
Actual correct information on how damage levels work! This needs to be stickied so people stop thinking derp 300 damage does max vs 30 and below mobs!
-
So you have stats to show the 285 fatebringer does less?
-
Impact is your weapons base damage in relation to guns of the same type (sniper to sniper, ar to ar, etc). Where are you getting the 15 from tho?
-
Edited by Mr Biscuits1999: 12/26/2014 3:38:04 PMI always kinda wondered exactly how they figured out the damage lol but it's also kinda B.S. The way it's set up cause fatebringer causes the explosion with head shots that does ridonculous damage not to mention the exploding bullets... I think it's just kinda stupid my 300 fatebringer (overall per shot if you can get head shots) is gonna do more damage than my 331 thorn.
-
Question? What weapon has the highest dps?
-
If the enemies you are killing are a lower level then you, impact is most important. If they are the same level as you or higher attack is the more significant figure.
-
-
So the cap for 331 weapons is 22? Im cool with this as the lowest I fight are 26 on roc strike So I wouldn't be under the cap until weapons were above 390 cos 390/15 = 26? Have I got this? So the post that said that having the vex moved up to 400 attack wouldn't do anything is wrong? Because it would do max damage to enemies lvl 27 and above? ????
-
-
Oh look its another guide.
-
Do you know how the impact works into damage done? I know that higher impact means higher damage but how much does each point of impact increase your damage?
-
Good info man.
-
you need to mention that player level vs. enemy level reductions...
-
Edited by Jampire: 12/25/2014 5:55:58 PMSo in essence attack/15 = max level gun will do max damage? Just making sure I'm reading/comprehending correctly. In other words 300/15=20. So an attack 300 gun will do max damage to level 20s and up?
-
This is sticky-worthy. God forbid Bungie implement a sticky function on their forums...
-
Nice. Hope your post gets more views than the incorrect one out there. Sadly it's popular too.. thinking a 331 weapon doesn't do more damage to lv30 mobs.
-
Rrrreeeeeeyyyaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!! Super bump
-
Scrub your mum goes balls deep
-
Suck it
-
Finally. Some science.
-
Been trying to tell people this forever also a easy way is think of the attack as a light lvl of the gun to do 100% of the guns damage vs the lvl of the enemy which is why 331 is only needed for lvl 33 enemy's. So people saying buff the vex to like 365 wont do anything cause there are no enemy's lvl 36

You promised boobs inside, so I clicked. I is now dissapoint :/
