Is there any chance we can have a decent discussion / debate on The Divine Comedy?
Lets start with :
Is it a good story?
Why is it a comedy?
-
It's a comedy cause it was written for the lower class. Side note: Dan Brown's Inferno. Pretty great.

It's a "comedy" because it has a happy ending (relatively speaking), but it's not one by modern definition. It's a nice lesson in symbolism and is a pretty cool historical piece of work, if nothing else. It's cool to see just one person's ideas of heaven and hell though, and see it through their eyes and not in some kind of traditional narrative but one where the author writes himself in to experience everything. It's a very personal work, and a good one to make allusions to when you write stuff.

I liked it

As of now I've only read Inferno, but I plan on reading Purgatorio and Paradiso in the future. I loved Inferno. I thought it was incredibly creative and found it interesting that an amazing poet like Dante used such crude language at times.

The story was alright. It really needs to be read while keeping a perspective from the time period in the back of your mind. These days it has surely lost much of its former impact because of the antiquated settings and plots. Only take the messages to heart if you want to live your life in the way Dante deems to be a holy (imho it was saturated with his own religious views). While the vocabulary is quite beautiful, the verse can make it particularly difficult to read in English. Overall, the only reason to read it is if you want to get a feel for classic allegory, or to simply understand why the book is so famous. Don't expect to be overwhelmed with emotions unless your are extremely religious. If you are religious, prepare to cry yourself to sleep while praying, believing you are most likely going to hell anyways.

My favorite book, read it 4 times. I'm in the middle of reading it again

Great book.

I couldn't make it past Inferno and honestly that was his passive aggressive way of placing people he, his family, and his political party had issues with in hell. If a Democrat wrote a book that had Republican party members festering in hell while Obama strolled through with Shakespeare it would be pretty much be the modern equivalent of Inferno.

It's not a comedy by our modern definition. I remember my APUSH/AP Euro teacher telling us about the difference. That was a while ago though, so I forget what he said.

Books are better than the game based on them. :/
