For those of you who usually aren't interested in this sort of thing, Tor is a special network which allows users to send their traffic through multiple nodes in order to bypass government blocks and maintain anonymity online. It is a vital tool for reporters and activists in totalitarian countries to communicate with each other and the outside world. Tor is one of the most important tools that countless people use to protect themselves and to protect free speech all over the world. Naturally, it is hated by the government. More information here.
tl;dr for those who won't follow the links:
Two days ago, the tor project warned that the government may soon be launching attacks to try to compromise the network. Today, an operator of a large cluster of exit nodes (a key part of the tor network) reported this:
Tonight there has been some unusual activity taking place and I have
now lost control of all servers under the ISP and my account has been
suspended. Having reviewed the last available information of the
sensors, the chassis of the servers was opened and an unknown USB
device was plugged in only 30-60 seconds before the connection was
broken. From experience I know this trend of activity is similar to
the protocol of sophisticated law enforcement who carry out a search
and seizure of running servers.
Until I have had the time and information available to review the
situation, I am strongly recommending my mirrors are not used under
any circumstances. If they come back online without a PGP signed
message from myself to further explain the situation, exercise extreme
caution and treat even any items delivered over TLS to be potentially
hostile.
UPDATE:
The situation has been updated. It is not known with certainty if this was done by the government (at this time still my main suspicion) or some other actor. Tor is still operational, and the affected servers have been blacklisted until further notice. Be wary. Someone is trying something bad.

Makes sense, considering they've been putting millions into it.

I thought the US government made Tor...

Edited by YamatoV_1: 12/22/2014 3:36:35 PMI dont see why you would need a program to hide what you are doing/saying from anyone. You say freedom of speech and all that but don't we get away with saying pretty well whatever the hell we want without such programs as Tor. Call me stupid or whatever but if you need to hide your dealings then you probably shouldnt be making said deals anyway. EDIT: Since this post I have been reminded by OP, aswell as a few others, that something which can be good shouldn't be taken away because bad people corrupt it.

Edited by The Cellar Door: 12/22/2014 3:03:36 PMCan you explain what happened to someone who has no idea what Tor or exit nodes are. Like I am the retarded Chernobyl baby equivalent in computer science. The only terms I understand in the realm of hacking and shit are like IP, ddos, and dox.

Much as I believe that freedom of information is the sole most important change that the internet has brought to the world... It is undeniable that Tor is used for illegal trade and child pornography. On principle, I am highly against this kind of regulation, but in reality, I'm kinda on the fence. Likewise, the existing UK government has announced plans for a huge increase in monitoring online communications, which makes me feel uncomfortable. But there should be nothing to fear if you aren't a terrorist or a paedophile. Disclaimer: this doesn't mean I support these measures by governments.
inb4 'murican spiel on freedom and the evils of government
It's not just Tor. We have our ways of coming back.

Not exactly unheard of, NSA and GCHQ to my understanding have targeted it multiple time with little success. Could be an attempt to find information linked to that Sony hack, but that's the only reason I see for a operation like this to take place now. Personally I think it was a entity not linked to the United States government, at least with the lack of clear information at this present time.
-
So what's the worst case scenario
-
Whoa I never thought about Tor that way
-
Lol you didn't talk about Tor at all in that thread. Anyway, assault on free speech is never a good thing.

Edited by Dustin: 12/22/2014 12:30:30 AMThe government should be spending more time giving black people and mexicans free money rather than dealing with this rubbish
-
Give it a month the government had done some ducked up shit and the internet allows for that shit to be worse and easyier to get away with.
-
I knew you were a hacker
-
Why u do dis? ;-;
-
W8 wut?
-
jeez man. I believed you but i didn't think it would happen so soon. shit
-
But think how much internet crime it allows...
