I was under the impression Xur upgraded our existing gear. It looks like he actually replaces it, and possibly with lesser stats. Honestly, how can this be a good way of doing things? Not only do we have to wait for the chance of him having the upgrade item we want available, but we also have to hope that it's not a junk version. Two lots of rng - that's just great :p
//rant!
Now the bit that really -blam!-ing grates - my first Lucky Raspberry was bought from Xur way back when it was first for sale. I slowly levelled it up, maxed it, and all was good with the world. A few days after this the same item was available, again from Xur, but this time with considerably more int. My uber exotic chest didn't feel so great any more so I bit the bullet, purchased and started to level the same item again. Eventually that was done, an uber 157 int chest piece .... and then the dlc comes out and I find out I will have to max out the same chest piece again, for the 3rd time, to bring it up-to-date. Fair enough, that kind of sucks, but hey, that's how it is. Now I find out that I'll have to max the same item again for the 3rd time to end up with 33 less int!!!!!!!11 What will happen next? Will Xur sell the same item again in a month with better stats? Will I be levelling the Lucky Raspberry for a 4th -blam!-ing time??!?! Are Bungie intentionally -blam!-ing with me?!?! Will I still be upgrading the Lucky Raspberry for the 20th time in Destiny 3?! Have I overreacted, having only looked at a screenshot of what Xur is selling this week, and will he infact be upgrading my current item with it's current stats? Possibly - I'll find out when I get home. If not, someone is going to die.

I think there is a range that the stats will fall in for these things. For example 120-160 for total stat value. It's random...I think.
