Back in the arcade days, it was all I wanted to do in my free time - go play in those digital worlds.
I can not really attribute it to any single game. Tail Gunner started it for me, but I loved Space Invaders, Asteroids, Defender..... Things just kept improving from there.
Then consoles!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now with the way games are done (scant content, DLC's, microtransactions) it's being sucked dry. There is so much promise with the new systems and digital universe, and we are getting less and less for it. It makes no sense.
GREED KILLS EVERYTHING!

When I was a kid, maybe the mid 80's, the family across the street from me had a Tail Gunner cabinet in their family room. I never saw another one anywhere and no one else I mention it to has ever heard of it. Very cool.

Back in around 1980 there was an enclosed sit down cabinet one in our local mall. My friends and I would see who would have been the best gunner on the Millineum Falcon taking out TIE Fighters.

That's cool. The one they had was the only one I ever saw. We did the same thing. Star Wars was everything then.

Much respect from another old timer... And you're right as far as micro transactions being foul, and greed hurting gaming. I will say that it's not a new development, though. I used to drop my whole allowance at those arcades moments after finishing the chores I did to earn it. Video games in arcades were designed to take quarters as quickly as possible. Probably why I learned to love pinball so much. Also, I remember putting money down on Pac-Man for the Atari 2600, and saving for it for weeks. It wasn't cheap, either. Probably still my greatest gaming letdown, up there with Syphon Filter 3 and Manhunt 2. Old days were rad, but things haven't changed a whole lot when it comes to greedy publishers IMO

Your 100% right. Things don't get made if there isn't a profit to be had. Gaming was expensive then too.
