Why do some anime fans call themselves otaku? It's a word with an extremely negative connotations. It'd literally be like Japanese people who like American TV calling themselves "losers". I personally love anime, but I don't let it control my life and I'd certainly never label myself like that. What's the rationale?

Edited by Goatman: 2/25/2015 6:55:53 PMIf anyone (not Japanese) calls their self an otaku, its because they're a goddamn weeaboo and deserve to be made fun of and beaten with a stick.
-
I love it when people hate on anime. Like come on it's just another form of entertainment (a fantastic one at that). But there will always be fanatics… just ignore the Otakus.
-
If you like anime that's fine; say you like anime. But please for the love of god don't call yourself an otaku. You have no idea what kind of negative connotation that carries in Japan. Btw, it carries a very bad connotation.
-
Otaku isn't just about anime. Someone who loves collecting stamps is a stamp otaku. Otaku just means you are very VERY into a hobby.

Edited by KamoKing: 2/25/2015 8:34:43 PMI'm wayyyyy into anime too yet I like the title of Otaku. I can't remember the last time I was outside.

Japanese word for loser, plenty of losers out there. Like those who wear gold chains and aren't black, or those who wear shirts that say they are a nerd.
-
It's a fandom (that the creators of the work) are able to look at and even mock themselves. IMO, that's pretty impressive and honest.
-
What's anime?
-
I only watch one anime.
-
Honestly anime is great, I love it when I'm bored to pull out my phone and catch up on tokyo ghoul root a or sword art online II. I also have all of my favorite anime openings on my phone: I love liar mask from Akame Ga kill the best :)
-
It's sort of an adapted perjorative. It's like how American fans of something use the term "Nerd" or "Dork" in affiliation with it. IE Comic Book Nerd, etc.
-
The definition is split into two. There's western otakus and eastern otakus. Western otakus just really like anime. Eastern otakus however are where the negative connotations lie. Having said that I really like anime yet I wouldn't consider myself an otaku. In my opinion it is still a negative term. Hope this helped.

Edited by JayJ9Nine: 12/22/2014 6:56:35 PMI really don't know. Being anime fan is fine, I love anime but in Japan being caller an Otaku has... well as you said, negative connotations. It's not as plain a translation as people think. And most people who call themselves Otaku are really 'weeaboos', meaning foreigners who think they know what an Otaku and Japanese culture is like and really don't.
-
Uhm, not all anime fans are otaku.
-
The translation for otaku is just nerd. That really isn't an insult. Actually being a nerd is considered good. I mean I'm one of the few people who still play Yugioh and when I showed my cards to everyone they all kinda accepted it and thought it was awesome.
-
Kotaku has otaku in it, confirmed worst website of all time.
-
Actually,it's literal translation means "guy who stays at home all day",so yeah, loser basically
-
Yea I really don't understand why people want to call themselves the Japanese equivalent of "obsessive loser". Either they don't understand the word, or they take some kind of pride in it.
-
That's why I say "I'm not a Otaku. I just watch anime."
-
Edited by Demagogue: 12/17/2014 4:31:32 AMIDK, maybe they don't consider it such a negative term? Some people might call themselves a "weeabo" or an "otaku" just for being an anime or manga geek. BTW, is your username a reference to AoT's second OP? I love that song.
