Why Polygon is Misleading

So the newest and hottest, "reasons you shouldn't be playing destiny," article has hit the feedback forums. I've read through the article and acknowledge why guardians are upset. I myself was initially upset that my progress was being reset on my exotics, and initially upset that people would easily be able to pass level 30 without completing the Vault of Glass. I was also upset that my favorite weapons from the Vault including Vision of Confluence and Fate Bringer would not be joining exotics in receiving a way to be upgraded. Through my frustration I still purchased the DLC. One week in and I have fully upgraded vanguard gear, taking myself to 31, a half upgraded Suros 2.0, a fresh Ice Breaker 2.0 and fully upgrade Voidfang Vestments 2.0. My vault still contains plenty of exotics that have yet to be upgraded and my glimmer stock has gone through a few fluctuations since upgrading 2 of them required around 7k glimmer each. 3 upgrades in and I still find myself using Fate Bringer, Vision of Confluence, Found Verdict, Light/Beware, Praedyths Revenge, and 3 out of 4 pieces of raid gear on a regular basis. All these weapons max out at 300. What this article failed to acknowledge is that although the level cap was increased and weapons with higher damage output were implemented into the game, the highest activity outside the raid at the moment is 30, which means weapons that max out at 300 are still viable to use during the nightfall and weekly strike. During the nightfall specifically, That extra 30 or so damage stat is rendered irrelevant because of the provided burn modifier. Maxed out weapons were effective during the Vault of Glass, and the hard mode of that raid is set at level 30. Now everything is set at level 30, and your pre DLC weapons are just as effective as they were during the Hard Raid, and I will continue to use them if those are the weapons that are viable for the situation. This article also failed to acknowledge that when it comes to your armor, increasing your light level beyond 30 is irrelevant in all activities besides the Iron Banner and the new raid. In PvE, once you equal your enemies level, your damage reduction is set to 0% and your damage does not increase on your enemy as you level past them. This theory has been tested and proven and you can see the numbers here (Skip to Level vs Damage Test to view the findings). For this reason I still wear my Vault of Glass gear during PvE activities. At this point in the game, your increased light above level 30 is nothing more than a cosmetic. Polygon did not mention that stats are normalized in PvP, so The Crucible is another spot in the game where I find myself using Vault of Glass armor and weaponry, as well as the pre DLC vanguard and faction gear. Light/Beware, Truth, Corrective Measure, Praedyths Revenge, Shadow Price, Found Verdict, The Comedian, all weapons I have maxed out at 300, are just as effective against a level 31 guardian as they are against a level 15 guardian. They are just as effective inside The Crucible as they were a month ago. My VoG gear carries my preferred perks and stats (intellect, discipline, and strength), so my build is still highly composed of said gear since I've yet to find any new armor with more favorable stats and perks. Does my current weapon and armor choice make me less effective in The Crucible because I'm still using old weapons and old armor? Not at all. Speaking of the Iron Banner, as we all know level advantages are enabled so you want to be the highest light level possible. But as well all know the damage falloff doesn't occur until around 4 levels outside of your enemies level. This means a level 30 will pretty much be just as effective as a 31 during the banner. Even 29s will be a threat since not many people will be at 32 come tomorrow morning. When it comes to exotics I completely agree with the Polygon article in that in doesn't really matter what you've done to your exotics at this point. I still believe I should have received some sort of advantage in the reset for maxing out the exotic first. That being said, even though I own all but three of the launch exotic weapons and four out of six of the warlock armor pieces. I only use a total of six exotic things on a regular basis. Those six exotics are SUROS Regime, Truth, Ice breaker, Patience and Time, Voidfang Vestments, and Apotheosis Veil. I received an upgraded Apotheosis from a drop, and while Xur was at the tower I began another 3 exotics to be upgraded. That's four out of six of my regular exotics that are already on their way to the upgraded versions. I only use Truth and Patience and time outside of the raid so there isn't a rush to get them upgraded at this point. Based on my situation, I am asking everyone who owns a high number of exotics if they actually use all of them on a regular basis. Honestly. Because my thought is you find a handful of exotics you base your builds around and you stick to them. Occasionally using the others for fun. At my current place in the game, that is what I am doing. So the 12 hours of glimmer farming and 280+ strange coin acquirement is going to spread out over months of gaming, or until the next DLC comes out, since I don't use over half my exotics in first place, I just have them to say I have them. In conclusion, I feel your pain, I really do, because I am sharing the same experience. But I think the numbers presented in the Polygon article provides shock value over realistic pathways to achieve completion, and completely ignores the fact that light level 31 and 32 are completely irrelevant during the regular PvE activites, and during regular Crucible matches. You don't have to upgrade everything at once. Spread out your upgrades. Upgrade your favorites first, even though Xur is completely random when it comes to upgrades, he carries enough upgrades that you'll see the exotic you have more than once. Even if he doesn't your maxed out 1.0 version is still effective in every single activity in the game so far including the new raid. By spreading out the upgrades the glimmer and strange coin farm won't be bad at all. Your Vault of Glass gear is still relevant. The highest activities outside of the raid are level 30. This means a level 30 guardian in full VoG gear is just as effective as a 31 guardian in new faction gear. Use your gear to balance out your stats and if they hold your favorite perks. You won't be at a disadvantage in neither PvE nor PvP What do you guys think? I provided a link to the article at the top in case you haven't had a chance to read it yet.

  • And then you read about horizontal progression, learn that they could have stick to that and let player keep their old gear if they wanted too, and not make them regrind the same gear twice. They implemented bad design choices, in a small time frame, without thinking about the result. There's so many examples in great games around them, they could have done it differently. In my first 3 months of play time, RNG was very kind to me in regard to exotics and exotic bounties, but not in legendaries. I couldnt even test my pulse rifle build, but I was keeping those leg armor with intellect/discipline just for that. When the new gear came out, they didnt even add more choices, it's the same gear that was available, with the same stats, just more light. Better stick to that autorifle/shotgun or hand cannon/sniper warlock, it's the only thing I sell! It is disappointing really. Iron Banner will surely sell the same autorifle/scout rifle gear too. Everything in my vault with light level 27 became obsolete, bye bye build testing. I had 3 Thorn, 3 Invective, 3 Bad juju, 3 Truth (just to name those I had x3, got 20 more), one for each character. Let's say half of them were maxed, but I loved the fact that I worked them up so that I don't need to go back to the tower and switch weapons, I've managed to bring all 3 characters battle ready. With the DLC, that's all gone. I dont really want to regrind all those weapons, yet I could have them all before the patch and I didnt mind the slow grind. I did lose something (call it luxury at that point), and the impact is I now lose more time switching weapons between characters, because even if I can upgrade them all, I won't have enough weeks to do so before House of Wolves drops. And time is the only ressource I can't justify losing when playing a video game. Like many others, I dont have that many to spare in redoing old stuff I've already done. The choice is not a choice. The cake is a lie.

    • I'm afraid all of your points are incorrect in every particular. You are grasping at straws, trying desperately to believe that Bungie has not disrespected its players to the extent that it has. The disrespect is real. The reality that all endgame is is a nonstop grind is real. Btw, I hope you enjoy being a complete drag on your raid team as a level 30 with 300 attack weapons.

          • the biggest issue (and I think thats what the Polygon article also says) is the Exotic upgrade system. For instance. If I upgrade my Armamentarium trough xur from old to new that was already fully upgraded I have to pay a hefty amount of glimmer and a exotic shard thingy to get my new not upgraded chest. besides the fact that it is now (for a short time worse) than the old one I also have to put materials into it again including yet again an extra exotic shard. If I find the new Armamentarium trough any other means or buy it from xur the old fashioned way I still have the old chest to use till I upgraded the new one to a point where it is better then the old and then can dismantle the old one for some extra mats (well 1 exotic shard basicly I guess) making it at least FEEL less punishing. This upgrade system could be more fair Imo, if it not asked for you two spend 2 shards into it and/or invaliate all the mats/time you already put into it. I for one am only upgrading the items I am in desperate need of quick (Only upgraded my chest and if I had the glimmer on Friday also Icebreaker, but unfortunately I was away for the weekend so could not farm enough glimmer in time), the others I am just gonna replace with drops till I dont need my mats any more for the Items I need for raids/PVP

            • Your post is very good, better than most of the trash here on these forums, kudos for that. That said, I fundamentally disagree in there things: 1. I expected Crota's gear to be better than VOG, I did not expect Vendor gear to be better than VOG gear and it is, period. They shot themselves in the foot rendering one of their raids useless. 2. Just because you don't use all your exotics, doesn't mean we are all the same. We should be free to use and upgrade all our gear the way we want it to. I have over 20 weapons maxed at 300 so if I maxed it out, that means at one point or another I used it. 3. I appreciate your tips but make no mistake, those are just tips to work around the way this rediculous system is laid out, that doesn't mean the system isn't punishing players, the hardcore players that have invested countless hours on this game get more penalized than the one who chose not to, because it is.

I'm not even upset with the whole exotic upgrade issue. I'm upset with their treating raid weapons and armor as "normal legendaries"... They're not. They were literally the hardest weapons and armor in the game to obtain. Most of us spent 100 or more hours (if you have 3 characters) in the raid to get all of this gear, and it's essentially being made useless. I've gotten exotic drops from legendary engrams while out running patrols... What sense does it make for that weapon to be carried forward, but the ones that took that much time, patience, teamwork, and actual skill to obtain will end up being disassembled to make room in the vault in a few months? Exotics are nowhere near the rarest weapons in the game. Everyone has a Suros... How many have Praedyths Timepiece, Fatebringer, etc... Honestly, it's made me realize just how pointless running the new raid will be in a few months, and not allowing the gear to be carried forward is a disincentive to pour days into it... They've already said that our progression will be carried over to the next game... What's the point of grinding for these unique weapons and armor if the only thing that they will be good for in a few months is running patrols...

                      • You obviously do not play the game at all or have zero understanding of how the leveling system of weapons and armor affect performance in game. Which begs the question, why would you go through the trouble to write such a lengthy, erroneous piece of garbage? Bungie isn't giving out exotics for favorable propaganda fanboy. If you truly have all new fully upgraded equipment and are using all your old gear in PvE, then you have no comprehension of how the game works and you are making the game needlessly hard on yourself, or you just an idiot. But in reality, I'm gonna guess that your just a fanboy and a liar, especially since your current character is level 31. ;)

I agree to all of the above and have been saying the same thing if 1) you do not play end-game material or 2) you do not have the DLC. The problem is that most people out there with raid equipment most likely will be getting the DLC and playing the new raid which means they have to make the switch to the vendor stuff and discard their time-invested raid gear. They most likely made assumptions that their raid gear would be the best gear to use in the new raid, and that vendor stuff would always be inferior. Whether or not this was a bad assumption, it ended up being wrong and raid grinding that people may have done specifically for the purpose of prepping for the new raid was all for nothing. The best option for the new raid and Iron Banner is to use fully maxed vendor gear (and new raid gear if you have it). Many people are affected by this change with at least one character, so to say it has no impact is excluding the most dedicated portion of the community. And note that within the Iron Banner, damage falloff does occur for every level below an opponent, but you remain "competitive" as long as you are within 4 levels. Having the highest attack and defense rating is the rule in Iron Banner and this rule hasn't changed. The other issue is that we are setting a precedent here that with the next DLC in a few months, all of our VOG and 1.0 legendaries and exotics will become even weaker as the nightfall level will likely increase again and at that point a 300 max attack power weapon will not be the best option. As I do not have the DLC, I'm only being impacted by the Iron Banner, though it offers nothing special this time around as the gear is the same quality as vendor gear so I may not even play it that much. Looking down the road though, the next DLC will change much of how I play as my VoC will no longer be the choice for non-solar-burn nightfall activities, and any drive to obtain new raid weapons and gear is no longer there because I can just pick up good vendor stuff eventually that will surpass it.

                        • So the complaint is you have to play more to get to where you were? Maybe its just me but that isn't that the point of this game. A large part of this game is making tactical decisions as to what weapons are important to you and your style of play. Let's be honest, before the dlc you looked at the nightfall modifiers, grabbed a couple maxed weapons, and walked through it. In the last week I've been switching back and forth leveling icebreaker and dragon's breath. Seeing the arc burn modifier today made reconsider my neglect of thunderlord. A large portion of this game IS the grind. Maybe I'm just a masochistic, but I enjoy it. I assure I'm not trolling when I say the following, but the prowess of one's Destiny toon should not be that important of an issue in one's life to get that upset. Are the dlc changes perfect? Hell no, but I think the devs have shown a willingness to tweek the game. You will not like every change. If you really are that upset then stop playing. You are playing to have fun. If you find yourself filling this forum with anger filled posts, for your own good play something different. There are a lot of fantastic games out there.
