There's quite a handful of books that have ringworlds in them, Consider Phlebas, being one. I'll have to look into stuff that looks like the Traveler... then cross-reference that with Charlemagne.
Looks like I've got some reading to do. Thanks!

I was reading the universe forum and apparently someone said Destiny had a lot of themes from this book:
link
The story talks about a "golden age of mankind, an alien protector, etc"
"Without warning, giant silver ships from deep space appear in the skies above every major city on Earth. Manned by the Overlords, in fifty years, they eliminate ignorance, disease, and poverty. Then this golden age ends--and then the age of Mankind begins...."
Might be some of Bungie's inspiration like ringword was for Halo.
Perhaps it's got a bit of Rendezvous with Rama.
"Set in the 22nd century, the story involves a 50-kilometre (31 mi) cylindrical alien starship that enters Earth's solar system. The story is told from the point of view of a group of human explorers, who intercept the ship in an attempt to unlock its mysteries." ... always in three..

Your in luck then, because I've been compiling a list of stories and books that people say might have an influence to background of the next game. Here it is:
*Childhood's End
*Guardian Angel
*Rendezvous with Rama
*The City and the Stars
*The Sentinel
*Mutineer's Moon
*Eon
*Chilam Balam
