I'm a level 26 Warlock, and to summarize what I'm about to say I'll ask this: Is having only one character a practical or even possible way to get to level cap efficiently?
I play Destiny. A lot. But all of my friends have more than one character on destiny, since they find it easier to do the Nightfall once on each character per week and transfer all the strange coins to their main account. Sure, this is a great idea. But why else should I spend time getting another character to 20 to possibly be let down and not even find a legendary until week 3 of having that character? What other benefits does it actually have besides randomized loot drops and strange coins? They keep telling me that I should do it, and honestly I'm on the verge of it. I just want to know if it's worth the time.

The raid is the main reason most people do it. You're not guaranteed to get your gear, but you have twice the chance of getting it when running it with 2 chars vs 1, or of course 3 times the chance when running with 3 vs 1. I personally made two warlocks (my main class) to try and get raid gear quicker and then one titan (wanted a titan over a huntard)

Check me. Only 1 character and he's maxed with lots of exotics.

Also 3 factions, after Vanguard and Crucible. If you want access to their weapons best to have one with each. I'm to the point now I spend my marks on armor to shard rather than letting them hit the cap.

You may find out that you love playing with the other character more than your main

3 nightfalls 3 heroics 3 dailys 3 sets of bounties to level up weapons faster

I think it is worthwhile. You get to experience multiple classes. You get the opportunity to do the nightfall, raid, weekly heroic, and daily heroic multiple times and reap the associated rewards. You can more easily level all three factions. You'll have three sets of vanguard marks to spend as you see fit. The list goes on.

3 chances at everything raid loot nightfall and coins plus a different playstyle and a use for all the other classes items you get :)
