Hi Bungie! I see you there, looking at me, looking at you... I have a question for you. Why isn't reforging weapons and armor a standard feature in this game?
To me, this feature doesn't break any rules. As long as you leave exotics out of the equation; the unique perk need to stay unique. But you already have systems for reforging already in the game, it would just need to be tailored for the tower permanently. This creates an avenue for players to tailor playing style to specific perks they prefer or a currency sink that forces people to choose between expanding their armament or honing it.
Below are a list of six features associated with reforging that I think would benefit being included or added to this system.
Soulbinding & “Bound by the Darkness”
Call it "light-locked", I don't care what you call. Just make it so that once a weapon is reforged, it is then locked to that guardian. This makes that guardian question if it's a good idea or not and gives the decision weight. Do they want a mediocre weapon they can trade to other characters or 1 perfect weapon tailored to their hunter/warlock/titan? Also, this prevents guardians turning into little tower armorer bots if a trading system would ever be released.
Bound by darkness could be used as a term to show the player this weapon cannot be reforged. This can be a tool used by Bungie to help balance potentially game-breaking perks on certain gear.
1st Perk Only / 2nd Perk Only/ or Total Reforge
Making it just a little easier to obtain that perfect weapon. Obviously, make each purchase weighted so that a complete reforge costs less than locking out specific perks. You could also make it so that the guardian has to earn the ability to reforge by leveling the items XP again; this means players aren’t feeling like the XP they're gaining is wasted on their favorite weapons or armor. One could also, argue the addition of changing damage types of a weapon. Need solar, not arc; bam. My argument is that raid items like the Vision of Confluence (and the like) need to be locked from reforging damage type. Why? Because non-raid gear can already have everything, this system is just providing the recipe for acquiring that. The raid items are not, and future encounters are being balanced on that weapon NOT having the option to the other types of damage.
Prefixes & Suffixes
Make the first perk include a prefix to the item and the 2nd perk a suffix. This would make identification of specific perks easy for people mix/maxing in the crucible or someone wondering what awesome weapon is by their side in a strike/raid. I know this feature isn’t for everyone, but something I have enjoyed in other games and can see how it might be beneficial to Destiny.
Shaders
Let us reforge shaders onto our weapons/armor/sparrows/ships. I mean, we're forging our "legend" right? This can be done in many ways…
- One time use, for each shader. Coloring one item or set of armor. Maybe adding another shader for armor coloring the entire group.
- One time use, adding them to a color palette. Giving that character (not account) the ability to choose it again.
- One time/multiple use, allowing the application into a framework for each set of armor. (Ie allowing us to create our own shaders like Achilles or Chatterwhite. to each piece.
- I’m sure there are more combinations, but greatly flexibility in this area is desired.
Options like this make that guardian have to choose which piece gets to look cool right now, and which has to stay the same. Again, making that player have to choose, choice is under-valued in my opinion..Making decision mean something, reward the player with a greater sense of accomplishment. Also, this makes duplicates of the same color mean more or not feel useless after getting them a second, third, or fourth time. Or you're happy to see the IB or other events pop up again because you have something else to work for.
Items
I'm actually going to steal a feature from Guild Wars 2 here and say that we need something similar to the "Mystic Forge." We need a place to turn 4 useless uncommon's into a rare / 4 rares into a CHANCE at a legendary / 4 legendary into a CHANCE at an exotic. What's great about the Mystic forge in GW2 is that 4 items combined (of the same type and item level) always yield the same item type and give you a chance at a higher quality item! Where four random items and quality give random results... I love this! This could also be a place to convert material like spin metal or helium into others, the recipe ideas are endless.
Recipes
Speaking of recipes, this the forge, see above, would be a perfect place for all sorts of things!
- Material exchange. 50 Helium + vendor bought item + weapon parts + 1 Spirit Bloom = 50 spirit bloom! This can be expanded to almost everything. This also turns into a currency sink as player now have to spend glimmer or something else to buy the vendor items.
- Shaders. Have four of the same or duplicates. Combine them for a random one. Or allow a real color palette to form with certain combinations yielding specific shaders.
-Etc
Misc
Lock reforging to factions (credit - badantjoka4k); making sure to lock specific perks to each one making the player choose whom to join and giving choices weight. This would also make it easier to balance as each faction only has access to a set number of perks.
We need something. I feel, that if done correctly, these systems could also take the place of a crafting system for Destiny. While we're not crafting the items themselves, you are crafting the perks or the weapon "name" (the base weapon), and with enough grinding or effort, you could have the perfect weapon for you. Which is legendary.

Posted my idea here: http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/79672715/0/0/1 Suggested a cost high enough one can't just spam reforge. Every gun unique makes everyone legend. I feel like there is a possibility some sort of weapon altering is coming in the DLC but I'll wait to find out before buying
