So Bungie COO Pete Parsons took the time to critique the game review process to Gamespot, stating that games like Destiny require a need to change the way games are reviewed. I took some... issue with his responses.

Why, yes Pete... it is. BECAUSE YOU WOULD HAVE BEAT THE GAME IN 11 HOURS... got a crap pulse rifle and had absolutely no clue wtf the story was about. You would have then realized you had about another 11 hours of replaying the same game you just beat over and over to grind for an some artificial number so you could hit the glass ceiling to raid. Which you would have beaten by the end of the first week (if it had been available).

Well thank god you arent Pete. Let me sum Destiny up for you, and it is the polar opposite of impossible.
1-20: Blast through the story in 10 hours, have no idea wtf the plot was, doesnt matter, doesnt affect anything
20-26: Grind the Story, Bounties, and Crucible for Rep/Marks
26-28: Grind Shards/Mats to upgrade gear, Raid
28-30: HM Raid, RNG for helmet, Grind exp
30: Nothing to do... grind exp for the 10 exotics that suck sitting in your vault.
'barely experience sort of the campaign side'? I think you mean the campaign side can barely be considered an experience.
PvP? Although I do enjoy it for the most part (not counting Blind Watch... seriously... guys... did you play that map?... like... ever?) has little to no value in progressing your character to 30 (not counting IB).
All the end-game activities? Are you shitting me? there are TWO: Raiding and Grinding.

Okay Bungie, you now have Ubisoft agreeing with you... the people that just put out Assassin's Creed: Unity. You know, the game that Forbes said should have been recalled due to the number of glitches and functional issues.
This article really struck a nerve, obviously. Its one thing to gut a game, have whatever internal issues you all apparently had,
and put out a game that artificially stretches out play time with grinding. I understand (as your contract with Activision is all over the internet) you cant come out and say anything negative or admit that Destiny is not the game you intended to make. But I have to tell you, this article pushes a very thin line: you have the audacity to blame the review process and call it into question? That's like advertising a BLT, selling me a turd sandwich, then telling me I just need to reevaluate what a sandwich could be. Pete Parsons responses make me wonder if he even has played Destiny.
This article is embarrassing for anyone with half a mind. You look ignorant to your own game, and the situation you have put yourself in. I dont expect anyone at Bungie to take open accountability for what Destiny turned out to be, but you look like an asshole when you point fingers at the review process and make excuses.
You really need to get out of your own way Bungie. Having been a huge fan since Halo caused me to invest in an Xbox, I write this to try to help you... but I have to admit, I am beginning to question if Bungie even is the same company anymore. I hope you realize I am not the only member of your fanbase that has had their trust shaken. Despite my coarse and sarcastic tone, I really do.
Try to remember: this time twenty years ago, you were sitting in a warehouse in Chicago folding your own Marathon boxes to make Christmas orders. Today, you dont fold Destiny boxes... and thats because of your fans.

I would think these same reviewers that review games like World of Warcraft, Skrim and Oblivion should be able to do a decent job. Are we saying that not only the player base is incapable of providing Bungie constructive criticism but the people at like PCGamer, Game Informer and IGN are incapable as well? Sounds arrogantly reflective of the type of attitude Bungie shows towards their user base. Wow...

He wasn't sitting in a warehouse. The only old Bungie employee left is Jason Jones. It's become the norm to hate on everything. Game reviews focus on the bad and don't say much about the good. Review scores are arbitrary. IGN spent more than half of a review I read saying CoD:AW had a terrible single player campaign the story was full of inconsistencies and random exposition. Then they said about equal parts good and bad about the pvp and slapped. 9/10 on it. The review of DA:I where he actually beat the game, was one of the best reviews I've read. Because he actually played the game. Yes Destiny's campaign was short and left people wanting, and the endgame leaves something to be desired, I won't argue with that. But as far as I can tell, most of the server issues are fixed, they fixed the cryptarch, they fixed the loot cave(s), they did some fixes to the raid and they're pushing out new content quarterly. Destiny is only going to get better. Most of the reviews I read went in with an expectation. Is this going to be like Halo, Borderlands, WoW or CoD. In the end it wasn't quite like any of those and they reviewed as such. I bought it expecting something much more MMO like, I was a little frustrated when I hit 20 and it was just a gear grind with limited content. Then I reminded myself what WoW was early in 2005, one raid, a handful of instances (strikes), no vendors, no rep, a few confusing factions, a lot of disconnects and login queues. Yes WoW had a social aspect, yes WoW had 60 levels, yes WoW had a more open world, yes WoW had more plot and lore (but they already had 10 years in the franchise) and WoW had a lot more classes and abilities. But in the end it's largely the same. Go here, kill this, get x reward you don't need. Go raid, get gear, grind factions, get gear, farm mats, upgrade gear... Bungie made a console fps/mmo-something or other, which was supposed to appeal to to masses. Which it seems to have done. Early in the hardcore fps people didn't like it because it was too easy, the mmo people didn't like it because it was too fps-like and other people hated it because it got them a lot of YouTube views. Whatever Destiny might have been, it is what it is. Almost every post I see about it failing to meet expectations was filled with assumptions and personal expectations based of what they had interpreted. It's clear some things got changed and cut. But it wasn't to resell it to you as DLC, they clearly went a different direction in the end. Which isn't a direction everyone liked, but there it is.

He should be glad they didn't review it for its endgame. I'm currently in this Tier: [b]26-28: Grind Shards/Mats to upgrade gear, Raid[/b] and here is a rundown of my typical gaming session: If I have very little time, I begin a patrol on Earth and run as fast as I can to The Divide and sit around picking off Dregs until the Spider Tank drops. Then I hope it drops some form of Ascendant material. If not, I head to the Tower and hope for one in the mail. Shut down game. In 6-8 days, if drops permit, I then have to run to one of the 4 planets and farm Loot Chests for the rest of my materials. Rinse. Repeat. If I have some time, I will play the Crucible which does not level my character up AT ALL or play a Strike or 2 in the hopes of getting more materials. I usually don't, so I might as well have just done one Gold Star Public Event and moved onto Netflix. Don't get me wrong, I am addicted to this game and what is there is quite fun, but the review process was NOT the problem with Destiny. I think most nailed it quite perfectly.

I saw this yesterday. I posted it, it went down stream fast. Thanks for brining this up. My take, if anyone cares? The ratings were given to the game that was given to us. If it gets better over time? It should be reviewed again. I gave the game a 6.5, like others. Why? The story is almost nonexistent. Going outside the game to learn more? Lose a point. No LFG tools in the game, going outside to find parties. Lose a point. The communication, is our systems. So are the friend lists. Lose a point. Matchmaking for only some of the content. Lose a point. The only outstanding, great thing? The gameplay mechanics. The graphics are good. Granted it is a online game. It should be reviewed again after the DLCs. So far Bungie has given us team chat in match made parties. That's it. I still rate this game at 6.5. I think it's a shame they can't admit their game is flawed.

Bungie wants a review of someone unbias and more the 11 hours of play??? Well, heres mine. Let me tell you a story, of a fantasy land. In our near future, we are brought to a golden age. All because of a few astronauts found a mysterious relic. Older then our planet earth itself. This time of great prosperity was a time to be desired. But then, out of nowhere. A mysterious and ominous darkness befell our great civilization. No one knows where this great force came from, all we know, it was after the relic, The Traveler. War soon ensued, powerful alien races came in the wake of the darkness, and threatened our very existences. Our greatest warriors, gifted with wondrous powers from the Traveler, fought back, and pushed the alien forces back. Our once great cities, broken and destroyed by the Darkness. We must fight back, we must bring peace back to our world. The humans race depends on it. Guardians unite, and bring down the forces of darkness, together. (better story then Destiny itself, right?) Destiny, could be the top game of the century. It has everything numerous players will come to enjoy. PvP matches with unique classes. Scenery that makes you feel immersed into these worlds. Monster alien forces that try to kill you at every turn. Gun, Soooooo many guns. And unique armor that helps players customize how they look. Fun little speeder bikes to travel on these planets faster. Sometimes I catch myself sitting on Venus just looking out into the world. Thinking, "what happened? why did they have to destroy this beautiful planet". I walk around, killing these different aliens to hopefully one day, restore this planet back to the golden age. But the more I fight, The less impact I really have. These monsters just never stop coming. For each one I kill, ten more takes it's place. It's a never ending battle, and hope is soon fleeting. I came into this world, after just being dead for god only knows how long, to see despair. More so after I learn more and more each day. As a gamer, I can see the potential Destiny has. But I bought this game under false pretense. I thought I was getting a huge world to explore. I thought I'd be able to trade with friends. The Idea of gambling seemed interesting to me. I figured I'd be able to reach level cap and be distinctive in my looks as my character progressed. I was told I'd become a legend and make my own story. Instead, I got four maps that take seconds to travel in a full circle. And mobs weren't close enough to cause too much trouble. I've gotten countless duplicates that I can't even give to my friends. Theres nothing to gamble on, other then the RNG. Everyone looks the same at level cap, minus color. And I'm far from a legend and don't have a tale to tell. Plus, I keep getting attacked by rapid animals. And mysteriously, the aliens have health potions yet I don't. I read everywhere that this game is far from complete, that it's ten years in the making. But everything is gonna cost me. I don't have time to explain, why I don't have time to explain. The story is very much lacking of previous games released by our beloved Bungie. And to some, that's the biggest flaw of the game, myself included. But there's many more flaws. Unique weapons are outgunned but legendary. The RNG barely gives you anything you don't already have 20 of. Monsters coming back from the dead. And even random animals attacking you so bad that you need to run to the safety of your ship. I could go on and on about how bad this game is. So how about I give some good points. This game has a solid "BASE". Far from any complete game you'd come to expect, but overall, enjoyable. It has promise, You have fun killing the monsters over and over. And the PvP can be entertaining, If you're into the whole mindlessly killing players scene. But it has very little that players can actually do for their character. I give Destiny a 4/10. Overall, It's personal preference. I would tell my friend not to waste their money on it. I'd tell them to wait the 10 years or so for it to be a finished product. But I wouldn't tell everyone to do the same. I find it fun, but repetitive. And you can only do the same strike so many times. And worse, they punish the community for thinking outside Bungie's box. We'll all have to wait and see how things turn out over the next few years. So tired of reading all these negative posts every day. Destiny is a video game. That's all. You kids are acting like Destiny was supposed to be the Second Coming, lol. It's pathetic, especially when you constantly complain while you continue to play. There are so many other great games out there, go play one of them! I don't like CoD, therefore, I don't play it. Do you see how that works? If you don't like Destiny, don't play it. It's called being an adult and making a sound decision. This game will be huge once the new expansion packs hit. There's going to be so much to do that people will start complaining that the game is too long and it's too hard to beat lol. I have fun playing Destiny, so I will continue to play. If you don't, then don't continue playing. It's incredibly simple. Why would you waste your free time playing something that doesn't make you happy? You sound like a jealous ex girlfriend who won't let anybody else be happy because she isn't. Get over yourselves. No wonder the forums have so many problems.

Some reviewers are unreliable. However destiny is a 6/10. Simple improvements can just about make this game a 7/10. Bungie is working with a great game concept. Not many games like this. Only other i know is borderlands which did pve correctly. The dueling/pvp was complete unbalanced and you did end up getting modded weapons but i think borderlands pve was the way this game could be. Doesn't need that amount of weapons. A great fix for destiny would be for a raid fix and if there is anyway to make pvp netcode better. Would lower the frustration.

Bungie are full of it. Pretty much everyone who reviewed it had access to the game for plenty of time to write a full review no problem at all. What Bungie is upset about is that despite the power of AVTI the review sites still gave the game a general thumbs down. Had the early reviews been great we would not hear a word about it.

Del, While you are as eloquent as always (LOL) you hit the nail on the head! I too have been a hardcore fan of Bungie since Halo, I too have dumped countless hundreds of dollars into Legendary Editions of games, because it isn't just enough to play the game, I have to also have a plastic "thing" on the shelf of my office, drawing attention to my hobby. It is not just that there are faults in this game, there are faults in many games, glitches abound, as the ability to "update" games has evolved, the QA assurance of delivered product has devolved. This has made "final product" a thing of the past, or is it the future, because it sure as hell isn't the day of release... and I don't refer only to Destiny, I refer to all games. This is a widespread industry problem...or should I say "norm". Realistically, and game only reaches the "Final Product" status, when it is no longer supported, and it is regardless of how "complete" it actually is. For Destiny, I am completely torn, because the story is disjointed, the game is plagued with disconnects, and the loot system has done nothing but confuse and depress the masses. But despite all of that, when I can connect reliably, chat with my fireteam, and launch a daily or weekly strike without technical difficulties... I can turn my brain off and enjoy the ride. When this game works, it is probably the most fun I have had in a long time, maybe ever, playing cooperative missions with friends, and sometimes even randoms. Mission design is just long enough, and just varied enough to keep me interested, keep me playing, and it keeps me looking forward to when the kids go to bed and I can hop online with my friends for a couple hours of shooting bad guys, and blowing shit up. I can look past all the faults, because the upside is still much better than the downside.... but it bothers me that there is a downside, it bothers me that I need to take to the internet to discuss the downside. It shouldn't be this way. For weeks now since release, I have done my best to not single out Destiny (or Bungie) because of these faults in the game. I understand the well publicized contracts, and how deadlines must be made, and how cutting corners is how you make deadlines. Where or when did things go from "fan oriented" to "money oriented"? Was it Activision? Can we, the fans, point our fingers there? We understand that particular question cannot be answered, don't bite the hand that feeds you and all that, but at some point, can the fans expect Bungie to sit back, look at the big picture, and re-evaluate the priorities here? Something is broken, not just in the game, but in the process. I know that I will likely purchase the DLC, because I enjoy playing with my friends, and if it offers some more variety, then it should be worth it... but I would rather see the current focus be on fixing the disconnect issues across all platforms, see all platforms get the same amount of resources for fixes, and for the love of god... see all platforms get the same content. Why alienate any part of your fan base, when your current existence is entirely due to the fans who supported you? My mother used to say "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"... don't make me regret giving you more money! In Bungie we trust..ed! :(

Reviews put the needed amount of time into games in order to review them. Those who reviewed DAI played for nearly 100 hours before doing reviews because the game HAD THAT MUCH TO LOOK OVER. You simply can't put 100 hours into Destiny and have a different review than you would if you did what most of those who review them did. 12 hours is more than enough to get a good grasp on Destiny.

Well like anything in sales. You have to have a quick narrative that can be summed up under five minutes, or can be established with a motto or a basic concept. You have to like what your are selling and you have to believe in it. When the 2013 GDC came out it excited many gamers. And then it just became this downward plunge into losing its message. Now it's upward struggle and the Internet and reviewers have dubbed it a pointless grindfest. And it is a pointless grindfest that puts you on rails and funnels you into looking the same and feeling the same as any other player wandering around this silent beautiful wasteland.

My issue with many of the reviews is they used established genres as the standard and railed on it for not living up to both completely. Destiny is an amalgam of genres.
