Raid Loot, is the Real Problem Loot Distrubution?

Something you've probably noticed unless you lived under a rock was that people complain about getting the same item over and over again from Atheon or any boss in the raid. That or getting materials in place of a real reward or something worthless like chatterwhite or a ship. (BTW, anyone else think that ship looks uninspired for a raid level reward?) Well, I've started to notice some things. Being called a raid, it's hard not to compare it to WoW. RNG is in both of the games, but why is it broken in Destiny and not in WoW. Well, first of all it's partly due to rewards being skewed by performance a lot of time, but I'm talking about Raid and to some extent Nightfall and not Crucible. In a way WoW raid rewards are almost identical to Destiny's raid. Each boss and encounter has a loot table of potential rewards and it's drops are based on RNG. Yet, that's where it ends. In Destiny, nearly all the encounters share the same loot pool while WoW has very specific rewards per encounter. This is a double edge sword in Destiny because you have multiple chances of rolling for the item you want, but in turn you have less of a chance of your drop happening because of the larger loot table. This isn't so bad when the amount of loot in the raid is much smaller when compared to the amount of drops in a single WoW raid. It definitely works and both forms can be good or bad. Here's the biggest difference and probably the big reason the current loot system just doesn't work or rather work well; distribution. In WoW, depending on the raid size, each boss drops a set amount of items about two to five different items. Again, larger loot tables, but I digress. This works because players have control over who gets what loot. That level of control varies depending on if people are rolling or it be controlled by the guild leader, but there's still a lot of control and it works very well (in most cases). This is where Destiny loot system seems to fail on us. It offers no control over who gets what and that means who's rewarded what becomes very nonsensical and demoralizing. Take a moment and think back to your previous disappointing drops from Atheon. Now think about all the rewards everyone else got. If everyone's loot was suddenly pooled together to be shared amongst everyone doesn't the system suddenly seem a bit more fair and less nonsensical? Sure, you might not get the item you want because someone else might have a better roll than you or the leader gave it to them because they needed it more or whatever reason. However, at least everyone didn't get something they didn't need and at least some are happy instead of getting something they already had. Lets also take this a step further. This could potentially encourage people to make friends to run the raid with regularly because if that one guy got the gun you wanted last week you don't have to roll against him this week if it drops. Now, I'm not covering everything and some problems that would need to be dealt with such a change to the loot system, but I'm throwing it out there for everyone's awareness and to think about.

  • I've done the raid 3 times since Monday on 2 different characters. BOTH my warlock and hunter received the same loot.... All ascended materials up to atheon where it was changed to SUROS and ascended material and maybe a ship or sparrow. I AM SITTING ON AROUND 150 ASCENDED SHARDS!!! I do not need any more right now!!! Give my hunter boots like he has been asking for for the last 10 raids or a frikkin fatebringer! This concluded my venting...

  • I always felt the raid distribution system in wow was perfect. This is a crappy RNG system. It would be nice to see the distribution system go this way

  • I just don't want to beat hard Atheon and get 2 VoC at the same time for a reward. Had it equipped. My friend got 2 fate bringers from the gate keeper. There were guys in my group that didn't have VoC and I would have gladly taken a fate bringer. How about in party trading for all members of the team who start and completely finish the raid together after Atheon is beat before the party leader goes back to orbit, Raid rewards only.

      • 100% behind something like this or as mentioned just an exclusion of double drops. I get the same drops every raid even on hard. I read awhile back that it has to do with the random generator which random generates in such a way that its random but not random per player more random in general meaning it often results in patterns for players thus my getting a sparrow for almost every VOG clear and never getting a ship or my getting duplicate items in the same drop or in consecutive drops. The main issue as I see it is that in all the end game content like Nightfall and Raids the loot should be transferable to other players at the end of mission screen (VOG needs one of these) so that we could give others our duplicates and keep these missions useful. Most of us are tired of having multiple duplicate exotics and raid gear that serve no purpose when we could have traded that reward to another member of the fire team and both gone home happy with items we could put to use.

        • I wish that there was a pool option in the raid so if said player gets a weapon or armor piece for the 2-99999th time he can have it placed in a pool so that other members of the raid that needs it can get it (to prevent items other than drop from getting placed in the pool all weapons and armor should go to missing items block till end of raid [because no one should be using non leveled gear in raid anyway]) I believe this option will help the raid be far less tedious, what do you guys think?

          • I was thinking about this very thing and you've articulated the issues well. If raids ever get matchmaking, maybe the current random distribution can remain for groups put together through matchmaking, where pre - formed fire teams (or even make it Clan based to further encourage socializing/incorporation) could have more control over distribution. I can see something like... "Nice job everyone, we did it! Looks like he dropped Epilogue again. Anyone need it? Okay, Bob doesn't have an Oracle killing weapon yet, so sending it your way" *selects option to give loot to Bob*

          • Raid items already acquired by that character should be removed from that character's reward pool. It's that simple. That one teeny tiny change would fix the entire problem.

              • It really discourages people like me (working adults) from doing the raid. I've only done it twice, got Chatterwhite twice. I really would rather not expend the energy getting a group together and trying week after week for shit drops.

                • This is one of the more constructive topics on this forum. I, for one, have only participated in the raid twice (never completed it), and I would really like to do the hard raid to increase my chances. Amd the iron banner now lets me do that, but it'd be nice to give newcomers a little buff to their roll.

                    • He just needs to give more raid gear after beating atheon on hard The helmet is cool but I have more sparrows and ships then i know what to do with and I get nothing for breaking them down There needs to be a much greater chance of getting gauntlets boots and chest after beating atheon on hard mode

                    • I have done normal and hard and yet in over a month I can't get boots or gauntlet for my hunter. Now I have a warlock stuck at 29 too. I love this game but I am tired of this and seeing 25s now 30 and me being the only one in my circle of friends and their circle of friends to be a 29 still let alone for this long. What is the point of a game that holds you back while everyone else moves forward? I didn't even open my 3 other new games I got since Destiny came out cuz I been playing it so much. It is frustrating.

                      • I've been complaining all I get is found verdict and the epilouge...my second raid on hard mode this week my drops were(i have full gear already) 3 raid boots,thunderlord(already have but pretty cool) a chest piece, then Atheon dropped two helmets and the ship.(already have). I never realized I didn't get a fourth drop go back to the tower and get the mythoclast in the mail...didn't notice I didn't have room in my primary weapon slot. DEFF MY BEST LOOT EVEN THO I HAD MOST

                        • I think the biggest solution is to just remove ascendant material from the loot table for boss/boss checkpoint drops. We get enough from the chests.

                          • I've been saying this for awhile now. When you look at what actually drops, the drop rates for a particular piece of gear aren't bad. Atheon pretty much always drops two things that people actually want. The problem is that the game essentially forces everyone present to roll on the drops (well in effect. In point of fact it's just assigning the loot, with everyone getting a drop or shards/shaders). This is what leads to crap like my friend getting Visions of Confluence three times and plan c 5 times, and another to keep getting raid boots while all I seem to get is chatterwhites. Giving us control over our own loot distribution would actually solve a lot of problems.

                            • I received 5 chatterwhite by defeating atheom the 5 times I finished the raid. taking into account that he can drop 10 different types of loot, it was quite disappointing. I love this game, but I'm starting to get unlevelled only droping chatterwhite. Sometimes I think this is not just bad luck, there is something wrong, the chance is 1/10 ... drop 5 times the same item is quite suspect

                              • I have been playing this game everyday since it came out and I have done a ton of raiding both on Normal and Hard and finally Sunday(16th November) I received my 1st Vex from the raid. I have played so much I have 2 level 30 Characters and one level 29 but others who have played more than me have nothing. I wish there was a way to give the items I get, if they won't allow trading and I don't think they ever will. So sad to see someone who's done the raid so many times and have no raid gear.

                                Yeah definitely. Last raid my team did most of us ended up with nothing but ascendant materials. One guy however got 2 Found Verdicts, Patience and Time, Shattered Vault Cloak and the legendary sparrow. Doesn't seem very balanced.

                              • From my experience it seems to pick 2 people out of the 6 to give drops to throughout the entire raid. Last night we did the raid on hard. All me and 3 others got was ascendant material the other two got gloves and a chest piece (which they already had) one got 2 found verdicts and at the end they both got 2 helmets. This isn't the first time I noticed this either. I've seen this happen countless times to the point it looks like a pattern

                              • I'm not 100% from deleting characters but I think i've done 40 raids. I've gotten a full set of hunter gear, 2 full sets of warlock gear and I still feel it's messed up and unfair. I've gotten 6 raid snipers,12 shaders,4 ships,8 sparrows,4 shotguns,5 rocket launchers,3 hand guns, 5 exotic hardlights,3 vex mythoclast , but still no atheon's epilogue or pulse rifle. When my friend that's played every raid with me has gotten atheon's epilogue 8 times. I'm not looking to get every weapon and armor in 5 raids. At this point I could do 40 more raids and still not get epilogue.
