I would like to know of it is offensive to Americans when someone in a fireteam party says "Merica!" or refers to one as a "Murican". And not also when playing Destiny but also in this forum. I am not from the U.S. so I would like to know.
Last night doing the raid one party member blew himself up by firing a rocket launcher directly inside a Titan's shield, and when he laughed someone else said "...that's not funny...it may be to you because you hail from Murica!"... and I thought that was funny but did not laugh because silence ensued. Everyone kept quiet about it.
So is it an offense? The internet tells me Americans like to joke about it too, but I dont know if its the same as being called a bitch or an idiot.
Any thoughts?

Edited by quicktango: 11/14/2014 5:42:32 PMUs mericans ain't much fended at noth'n no'how. We ain't care noth'n bout stuff said on us none. We jus dont like play'n with them damn forners. Dont get theirr speek'n not one bit. Edit: translation: We here, living in the United States of America, typically don't allow ourselves to become, in any way offended at jokes, snide remarks, or otherwise crude or mean-spirited bantering directed at us as a nation. We prefer to brush these sorts of comments off. However, we admit to have some trouble understanding people of varying different cultures and backgrounds as us, and would rather not play with such people groups due to our lack of understanding of their language.

Merica......I say it all the time I am American I take no offense but I appreciate your candor in asking as to not unknowingly upset anyone.
-
As a merican, sounds like a fun time. People shouldn't be so sensitive. One time I asked this guy if his kids could hear me swear because I didn't want them to hear me and I was sweating in the conversation. He said no I'm using a head set, i instantly followed it up with "ok then, fuk you!" He knew I joking and laughed, friended me, and now we play together often.
-
As an American I say that all the time.
-
Not offensive to Americans at all. Similar to"redneck". Many are very proud of this badge.
-
Correct me if I am wrong but calling someone an 'merican (leaving off the A) and calling someone a Brit (British) is essentially the same. It how you use the term which can be marked as offensive.

Edited by TheHunan: 11/14/2014 5:16:25 PMI think it is funny. Just like lazy ghetto slang ranks up there with teef or toof and cray. And they are Americans.
-
I rarely hear people other than Americans using that joke so it's safe to say we Americans are fine with it since we are usually joking.g about it amongst ourselves. If someone is trying to use it as a derogatory term/comment then they are idiots because we won't take it seriously, at least I don't and I start laughing and then won't stop saying MURICA!
-
If it is meant in a derogatory way than yes it is offensive. However, if it is meant it a light jokingly way with no harm or insults then no its fine. The silence was due to the turd blowing himself up and thinking it was funny. I have wiped a dozen Raid runs because someone thinks its a good idea to fire a rocket in a bubble. It gets old.
-
No because anyone can be an American. Many Americans, including myself, will poke at the term the same way.
-
Meh..... I just blame the French it's their fault...
-
I would not be offended in the slightest, but I think no one laughed because it wasn't a funny comment.
-
Edited by freshlydunbread: 11/14/2014 5:09:13 PMI guess technically it is a bigoted statement, but a vague and inoffensive one at the most.
-
I'm not offended. Being the cynic I am, I actually appreciate the jab it takes at Americans, even though I'm an American myself. We can be pretty freaking dumb/selfish/ignorant/etc...
-
No it's actually really funny not offensive
-
Only Americans would laugh at stupid sh!t like that. Should of asked him if he laughed when the twin towers when KABOOM as well bc ya know, explosions are funny and all, especially in a serious situation.
-
I'm American! And no it doesnt. Americans are good people, Muricans are -blam!-ing morons. See what I did there?
-
Nope isn't offensive to me.
-
No. If someone is offended by it then they are prolly FAF
-
I'm not offended by it. I think it's funny because it pokes fun at how ignorant we as Americans can be. Plus, it's just fun to say in that southern drawl-y accent :)
-
It's kind of like asking if I would be offended if someone called me a Canuck
-
Edited by Jiirm: 11/14/2014 4:35:02 PMI live in the south of the U.S. Where that applies most. It doesn't bother me because I hate this place and the people in it. I don't belong here. I don't think people are offended by it here they use it themselves. They think it's cool or something
-
Before you do anything drastic, like blow yourself up with a rocket launcher, yell "MURICA!!". Makes it much better. Yeah, I don't care, lol. I'm an American and I say let them words fly! If someone gets offended, they are probably a pansy.
-
I don't think I get offended by anything anymore. If nobody gets offended then nothing is offensive.

Pretty much what OriginalHarmz said, dude in the party misused it.
