I would like to know of it is offensive to Americans when someone in a fireteam party says "Merica!" or refers to one as a "Murican". And not also when playing Destiny but also in this forum. I am not from the U.S. so I would like to know.
Last night doing the raid one party member blew himself up by firing a rocket launcher directly inside a Titan's shield, and when he laughed someone else said "...that's not funny...it may be to you because you hail from Murica!"... and I thought that was funny but did not laugh because silence ensued. Everyone kept quiet about it.
So is it an offense? The internet tells me Americans like to joke about it too, but I dont know if its the same as being called a bitch or an idiot.
Any thoughts?

Is not offensive I true American would love that. You can call me Murican, Merican, Freeman, arrogant entitled jerk. What ever you like.
-
If that has been called offensive, people are becoming overly sensitive. I'm Canadian and you can call me whatever the hell you want. Because at the end of the day I'm still not going to give a shit about what someone said to me over the internet.
-
Not offensive to me. It should be offensive to the dumb Americans though, that's why they don't think it's funny (surprised they even get it half the time).
-
Hell no it's not offensive. 'Merica! I wanna shout it from a rooftop. 🔫🎉💰🍻🇺🇸 back2back world war champs
-
Merica! Land of eagles guns and bacon! ♡
-
It's basically us Americans making fun of ourselves.
-
It's an expression we hear a lot these days, isn't it? "I'm offended by that." As though stating this gives them additional rights or superpowers that supercede my right to say whatever the f**k I want. Okay. So you're offended by that. So f**king what? Sounds like a personal hangup to me.

Edited by Sinfulbeing: 11/15/2014 8:45:41 AMI don't mind. I would mind if someone is a dick because I laughed at my failure, but I got no problem with you saying that.
-
Anyone saying the words "that offends me" is someone I stop playing with. It doesn't matter who said the "offensive" thing, the person that complained is instantly a whiny bitch and if I'm party leader I will kick them.
-
I personally don't find it offensive. People should have a sense of humor and realize that it's not a big deal.

Edited by F L I P S l D 3: 11/15/2014 1:55:49 AMSpeaking as an American - anyone offended by that needs to get over it! Only stupid people, rednecks and country music fans think it's a meaningful word. Great example of lazy linguistics. You should make fun of it as much as possible :)
-
Anyone actually offended by that word needs to get the F over themselves. It's not like it's got the same history as the N word. I say 'Murica 5 times before breakfast.
-
It's funny if you're stupid. But every jester has an audience. This particular audience enjoys inbreeding and paint chips.
-
Real Mericans are bothered by it, then again, real Mericans are bothered by everything. It's good wholesome fun kicking these idiots around. Colbert does it four nights a week. The majority of Americans laugh at it.
-
As an American service member, I say that word ironically quite often. It's not offensive by any means, but the respectful term is America, which I use when speaking to anybody of a higher rank.
-
Not offensive.

People that get offended should be offended

It's a compliment

Being able to be an idiot and justifying it with, "'Merica" makes me laugh. Context matters though. I appreciate it when it's light hearted, but it sounds like your team may have taken it as an insult to Americans.
-
No, 'Merica has become stupid as a whole. It isnt offensive, more apropos. And the US is not the only country to recognize it. I think it is funny as hell and i say nearly the same thing: "Suck on this one time! 'MERICA!" <fires Gjall so poorly I hit myself with rocket AND all the pieces parts> "'Merica", and all its iterations, is like a caricature of your average/stereotypical 'Merican.

Context and intent are what make something offensive. Anything can be offensive if it is intended to be so. However people also need to show respect for other people's ideals and can still offend without intent to do so (this would be using something in an inappropriate context/ situation). Then there are those that just revel in being outraged by everything they hear. Screw them.
-
Depends on the person and the context...
-
I can see no instance where that would be offensive. Even if used in an insult, I feel like it would offset the offense with humor.
-
Most people won't find it offensive but some people get offended over everything.
-
I use it all the time and no worries it is a joke for most
