Everyone mentioned the usual favorites like uncharted (3 is my fav btw) of FFVII so I'll list one of my more obscure favorites. Sky Odyssey on ps2. The single.most unique game I've ever played, there's nothing else like it.

Pre 2010 Halo Custom Edition couldn't be beaten, except from what I heard of Halo 3's prime. Unreal Tournament 2003 was also amongst the best games I've played.

It's hard. Different genres are hard to compare. Strategy? Star Craft 2, without doubt. Racing? I'd say Horizon 2. Shooting? Battlefront II or Borderlands 2. RPG? KotOR II. Sandbox? Minecraft or Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 (read: intro to economics and business management)
