I'm in awe in the universe of destiny and it always tickles my curiosity when I explore the ruins of the golden age I just think: where are the unlucky survivors? (Not just in The City) I love destiny so here's a bit of creativity.
I came up with an idea that the remnants of humanity who rejected the traveler (for various reasons) have cannibalised old war machinery protecting proud trade fortifications from fallen and hive.
Maybe a handful of outcast lords trying to reclaim land that was deemed too dangerous to claim back. With fleets of refugees, ancestors of the survivors who not only survived desolation of earth but also the massacre of the reef
I can imagine human ships landing outside these old fortified structures setting up camp like travellers with shanty towns, tents and markets ready to go to orbit and evade destruction at the push of a button. The people are very mobile traveling the safe trade routes via fast air bearing craft.
Then Guardians of the light could travel to these metal castles to offer their gun in return for loot and or glimmer. Defending these lords may prove profitable and not against the grain of the traveller, as fighting to survive is what everyone does.
However not every lord wants the traveler's help but they need it.
The outcast lords have a subtle and vital stream network connecting The City to humanities expansion of earth and it's forgotten resources. Untouched even by Rasputin.
One of the most prolific outcast lords is Maverick Krahe, cousin to the bloodline Krahe, he was outcast by choice for his own liberal ideas of independence. Maverick left The City because he believes; and quote "The Traveler is a symbol of oppression and The City is a dystopia of corruption and slavery..."
People describe Maverick Krahe as a bulky cabal look alike, only his strong human features and his blossom fragrance suggests otherwise. He represents his house with his deep black titan armour and his house mascot the crow. Jet black fur radiates from his shoulders and his skullfort-esk helmet hides his long black hair.
Some guardians left The City in order to follow Krahe in his pursuit of a traveller free earth. They are people who reject the traveler in turn for democratic equality. Krahe runs for lordship and he offers anyone else the chance to succeed him. His name and his actions hold weight which makes his position safe for the time being.
Humans who are filled with anger and vengeance take up arms with the more vicious lords and scour the forgotten land as hit squads wielding powerful military vehicles and weapons, demoralising their enemies wherever they see them. Most never come back and the ones that do? Well they refine their killing potential and become ferocious fighters.
Lord Jäger proudly preachers to his converted that he is the son of chaos and they say he is the god of war. His home differs from area to area battling fallen with guerrilla war tactics destroying convoys and supply freighters. He has pushed hive out of caves and settled fortifications within them. Absorbing alien power with his knowledge of technology and tactics. He has now become what The City fear, a lord of war.
Jäger was exiled from The City for leading unwanted suicide missions with irreplaceable guardians. His hunter capabilities made it easy for him to lead into hell and survive with no remorse. He was once celebrated for tactical victories on the moon and he also assured victory on earth. Nobody knows what twisted his exo mind but something snapped along the way, maybe he began believing he was a god and lunacy insured shortly after.
