I heard about this from Kotaku (via Facebook) last night. Kotaku summed up the article in one word : "Stupid."
The police should go after the guy who set this all up. It shouldn't be that hard to track him down; the police would surely have some contact information of the guy who set up the Bungie exec to be swatted. But I don't know; I read the article in the OP and it says that the person who set it up was using some method of sorts, probably a means to just leak info about the Bungie exec....meaning, possibly, there's no way to track down the person who set up the swatting. Maybe it will be that hard to track him down after all. :/
As for how this applies to the rest of us as a whole, well, if stuff like this continues, it will be a circumstance where we "have nobody to blame but ourselves". All it takes is one rotten apple to spoil the whole bunch, even though you yourself might be, or are, innocent. Turns out that "swatting" isn't a new thing, though it's new to me; some guy who got beaten at a match in COD swatted the winner, an event that happened in late April of 2014.
I think that, in order to prevent things like this from happening to us, we should keep our personal information discrete. I only use my username, though that itself is a big risk. On my PS4 it's possible to disclose my full name, but I only use initials, not just because I'm not playing games to seek relationships or friends, but also because I don't want someone looking me up in a phone-book.
