Destiny is console exclusive, which means almost all players play on a television, not a monitor. Many of these players play on plasma screens, millions in fact. The average play session of Destiny is logged by Bungie at 4 hours. I fall around that mark, and that's about all I've used my TV for lately, as I'm sure is the same for many players.
This leads to a huge problem, one that may have already permanently damaged my near $3K TV, the HUD is burnt into my display.
I'm a very proud owner of the "65in Panasonic VT60, and I paid a very pretty penny for it. Millions of others also playDestiny on plasmas, and the fact is no matter how "worn in" a plasma is, it is still prone to burn-in or image retention.
Either can occur after a static image is left on the screen for an extended period of time, like say, playing Destiny for a few hours a day, with no other content appearing on the TV in between.
From my recent average playtime, I now have a retained image of the bottom left HUD area burnt in my display; super bar, all 3 weapon slots, among blur where ammo is counted and so on.
I left my TV wiping for 12 hours, and the image is still there.
(Update 11/19) My TV has been wiping for almost 24 hours, and still has the HUD clearly burned in.
(Update 11/20) My TV has been wiping for almost 48 hours straight. The HUD is still there, but instead of a dark gray shadow, it seems to be a tinge of pink. This is a bad sign)
There is a simple solution for preventing this, and still being able to enjoy long play sessions. Battlefield 4 got this perfect right off the bat, they added the option to adjust HUD opacity in the video options. This completely stomped the possibility for image retention, and even after hundreds of hours of gameplay I never had a problem.
For those who don't know, this option would make it possible to have your HUD slightly see-through so the pixels are being stimulated.
This is a very big deal, and has the potential to ruin many plasmas, only from playing Destiny for an average play session, even with days in between.
BUNGIE PLEASE, add a simple HUD opacity slider and put all your plasma owners at ease.
Love, every Destiny player with a plasma.

That TV better be 4k res at 144 hertz to cost that much.
-
I don't actually know how this could be an issue. I'm in my menu, orbit, the tower, loading screens throughout my entire play session. Even during the raid I am switching to my menu half the time.

Should upgrade if you got the warranty still. Ky plasma started burning and I had a 5yr warranty, best buy didnt even make the parts for it (plasmas are a dying breed) so they gave me a brand new samsung led and it blows my plasma out of the water. The new technology is better man.

-
why would you dare to play anything on a plasma *facepalm*
-
This is one of those posts that makes me want to face palm. I have a solution, don't buy Plasma. Seriously have no idea why people even bother with them.
-
Plasmas are not a good idea for gaming. Thought this was common knowledge. Never have been. Never will be.
-
Old trick.....put a dvd in with a blank white screen(screen shot and burn to disc) and leave it on for a few hours, should take the burned in images of the screen. Plasma is the worst for gaming though.
-
I donated some plasma once, $50!
-
it's a good idea, but the blame should really be on Modern TV's that still have this problem. It's 2014 and I can't play a game for 8 hours without my tv never letting me forget? This is not the future Marty went to, therefore not the one I wanna be in.
-
50ut50 user, I have no such issue despite way too much time spent gaming. Make sure you have pixel orbit on, don't turn up contrast too high as that will boost white levels and promote burn in. Always run screen wipe after every gaming session for about ten minutes, regardless if I think anything burnt in. It would be great if developers thought to add opaque Huss etc, but that ain't gonna happen.
-
I play on a 60" Panasonic and I have never had the burn in problem with this game or any other that has a HUD. You should make sure you have your pixel shifter on auto and playing in the game mode. Not in any other mode especially vivid with high settings. Also the white wash is not the best way to get rid of burn in you need to do a color wash or having a constant moving picture in the spot that has burn in.

It's 2014 get yourself a LED.
-
This is why my TV is LED
-
Plasma is outdated. Get a led or lcd. Much better picture quality
-
That's stupid! You should know that's plasmas are only good for TV and movies??? You can't tell me that's you had a plasma and wanted to be a gamer and you can't tell me you are a gamer and got a plasma... God just trade it in for some cash and buy an led/ LCD...
-
I mean... It's a known fact that plasmas are not optimal for certain things like watching a particular program for extended periods of time. You can't says its bungie's fault... But you can throw a suggestion out there.
-
3k for a plasma? Maybe 10 years ago...time to upgrade, decent led tv's are. Heap as hell now
-
If you were dumb enough to buy a plasma for 3k you deserve every bit of this burn.
-
Bump! Ive been playing on a tiny LCD to prevent this from happening. Shame to miss out on Destiny in full HD glory.
-
-
Bump, because this is important.
-
Same problem here with a new Samsung f8500. Has yours improved at all? I've been running the WoW pixel flipper for days with no improvement. Very sad...
-
Agreed. Big issue that needs a simple fix.
-
I play on a monitor, get on my level.
