A serious question, do you guys think today's video games contribute to increased crime rate and/or increased aggressiveness of people?

There has been no study that conclusively proves that video games cause violence and if there was then it would be front page news everywhere
-
It has no effect on me like that. I've actually calmed down more, although that can be contributed to me getting older I guess.

Edited by Tilted the Wolf: 11/3/2014 8:04:52 AMAs video game sales when up, juvenile crime rates when down. Look up the Ferguson-Kilburn study on the subject. Edit: Upon further research, there was several errors in that study. I now understand that aggressive video games are a casual risk factor in later aggression. What that means to you is that someone who has played an aggressive game is slightly more likely to act aggressively than someone who did not play an aggressive game, in the same circumstances. Also added relevant picture.

Dark Souls 2 PvP increases my aggression levels ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) fūckin affinity, rapiers, and bs fishing.

Not for a normal person. But for someone who is very Impressionable or has some issues seeing what is right or wrong, they could be. The media always likes to blame video games for violence but the media is so screwed up today that I laugh.

Aggresiveness
-
no lol
-
I feel that violent video games help me work off excess aggression, which is helpful, because I'm the kind of person who has flashes of visions involving things that are commonly frowned upon in civil society when severely angered. I'd say not having my video games, makes me pretty -blam!-ing violent.

-
No. The violent crime rate in America is going down. Video games are growing in popularity. Almost seems as if the opposite correlation is true.

I'm not a psychologist, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. Psychology is not an exact science. From the few classes I have taken, I understand that we (people) know very little how our environment truly impacts human development. You can't point the finger at videogames without pointing it at all other forms of media. Also how much can you blame outside stimulus when the individuals mind may already be defective to start with. I think you (not literally you) could play the blame game all day but never really know the true cause. Ssssoooooo yes and no. For a healthy person I would say no, for someone who has a preexisting condition maybe, but maybe not. Its like a circle!!! Not like a square!!!
-
no, if you think it does you're a complete moron
-
Been playing games since I was 4(violent ones) , and feel terrible if I hurt someone irl
-
-
If Video games are a cause it also has to be the movies and shows we watch and not to mention the music. There are movies out there that are 5x more graphic than the video games we play.
-
No, they do not.
-
Maybe. Shooters usually have you mindlessly killing "the enemy" and they're usually inhuman. If they are human, they're dehumanized, "those guys are criminals, kill 'em," "those guys are -godwinslaw!-, kill 'em" you just mindlessly shoot people without considering them as humans. Do that enough and you may feel less qualms about actually doing it, idk.

No.....did a paper on this in college very long story short there is no linked between the two what so ever but it makes great news is the only reason the debate is alive...infact it has been found very heatlhy for people who let's say bottle there feelings up violent video game is a great outing for them like sports are to people
-
No. I have been playing since I was a kid and watched and enjoyed many action movies and have never been involved in criminal acts or violence. We practice martial arts and enjoy boxing as a sport, and we've never felt the urge to be violent, insult others or deliberately hurt anyone. The problem is that many people cannot notice the difference between fantasy and reality. Kids want to emulate what they watch on TV, read on the internet or listen to in music without realizing that entertainment is a work of fiction, as much as video games.

If video games affected people then facebook would be filled with farmers
-
Nah, but I did put a small hole in my wall after being shotgunned in the crucible. Then proceeded to stomp and yell around the house. I also threw a chair and scared my dogs.

-
Nuuuuupe
-
I would argue the opposite. More violent video games, less violence irl
