Hello floodians. (can i still say that, or am i too newfoman to do so?)
ive written a short story for halloween, now this is only a rough draft but tell me what you think.
We had been driving along the same road for hours.
It was about 9:00 at night and we had been driving along the stretch of road for what was like an eternity. The dark outside was silent, an eerie atmosphere surrounded our small automobile as it traveled at 80mph. My eyes grew tired, watching the trees pass by outside. My parents, both seemed focused on the road. I think my mom was asleep, she had her head against the car seat. My siblings beside me seemed to be asleep but I could see that my sister had a phone on, playing a game of some sort. I had been sitting in the car, staring out the window, at the sight of the never ending trees and road, the cars that were now sparingly appearing, all while in the car; on the road.
We had turned into a small town at about 10:00, not to fill up on gas at all, just drive through, I had forgotten why we had even gotten in the car on the drive in the first place. My dad said it was to explore, but now all I want to do is go home. Go to sleep, But I’m here, watching the never ending trees, and the darkness surrounding the car, and the houses zip by, and the street lights which were now rarely appearing the more we drove, the headlights in front of us barely enough to keep the dark road lit. We were safe of course, nothing could hurt us in the car, we were safe, and the darkness was out there. We were here. In the car; on the road.
The phone in my pocket buzzed with a notification, I pulled it out and gazed tiredly at the small LED clock. It was now 11:00. And we were still driving. I remembered why we were driving, we were going to a cottage for the summer. The night always makes me forget things. It’s a bad habit of mine. We had been on a new road now, one of dirt. We had driven right into the forest of darkness I once saw along the edge of the road. The one that could have many things lurking inside. I got those thoughts out of my head as soon as they came in. Nothing could harm me. I was in here, they were out there. A few minutes of driving through the wooded area, when our car came to a sputtering stop at about 11:55, the head lights dimming, allowing for the darkness to retake the road ahead. It couldn’t hurt us, we were safe. In the car; on the road.
My dad had motioned for us to stay inside at about 12:00. He left for a nearby cottage. He thought he saw one close by that he passed. Hopefully its occupants were inside. To help us charge the car battery while we waited here in the car. My mom woke up at about 12:15 and wondered where dad had gone. He should have been back by now. It surely couldn’t have taken long to find an occupant to charge the car battery. Then again anyone here was probably sleeping or not here at all. In fact the woods at night looked like an abandoned desolate location. Void of all life other than whatever trees and wild life possessed it. My mind was playing tricks, making things appear in the shadows even though they weren’t there. It was a cruel trick my brain had been playing, but after a while I was legitimately convinced that they were real. My mom got worried for my father when the clock hit 12:30 and went to go look for him. I fell asleep in the meantime. It’s now 1:00. And I and my siblings are still here. In the night, in the dark, in the forest, in the car; on the road.
I had searched around, the darkness seemed to blanket the Vehicle, trapping us inside. The creatures of the night had been closing in, I swore eyes were all around us. Staring at us from outside at our safe haven. My parents had left, and now I did not know where they had gone. I did not know if they would be back, and if they were still alive. The dark was intimidating. I could feel it creeping up. Waiting to strike. I sat back in my seat, as whatever was left in the battery of the car finally flickered out, and now the cabin lights had gone. The darkness had crept in, and I and my siblings were frightened. A cold chill was felt across my body as I closed my eyes, hoping for this terrible nightmare to end, to wake up at home, this couldn’t be real. It had to be a dream. I couldn’t be trapped here, in the dark, in the car; on the road
I woke up, the sound of tires on asphalt ringing in my ear. The lights lining the highway, illuminating the dark. The dark seemed to try to get past the lights. But it failed every time has another headlight seemed to burn it away when it returned. The cars zipped by, Rows of cars surrounded us on this small stretch of road. I noticed a forest that had begun to line the edges of the road. The darkness shrouding it in mystery. I didn’t know why, but I had such an odd feeling when I looked out the car window, one that I’ve seen this before, I looked at my phone clock, it was about 9:00. I felt pretty tired, soon we would be at our cottage, and I’d be able to rest. We had been driving for what seemed like an eternity. And the more we drove I couldn’t shake this feeling of being here before. The feeling of being frightened, as if something was watching us from the darkness, all while in the car; on the road.
