I don't really like to post anything ever however given that I've sunk so many hours into this game I feel I should offer suggestions that I think could go a long way into making this game that has so much potential into the game that everyone wants it to be... A great game.
It is has a long ways to go...
Before I start on my suggestions for Clans and making them relevant, I have a complaint that in my mind must be addressed. Part 0 - Skipping Cutscenes
Tons of people have complained about this so I'll keep it short. Add skip cutscene voting.
Part 1 - Clans
Clans currently mean basically nothing. Someone being a clan mate doesn't make partying up and easier if you are not Friends on your respective console, it doesn't provide you any rewards other than trophies. I find it hard to believe that this will remain true forever however I'd like to put forth a series of suggestions of how clans could be used to satisfy complaints and desires of players.
Custom Clan Emblem / Class Item:
Currently Clan Members will have a Clan Tagline and Clan Name associated with the details of their characters but unless you are in a post game report or look at a players details there is no real way to know a player or group of players are in a clan.
Exposing a custom emblem designer that would allow the founder of the clan to create a symbol and select n number of colors needed for Destiny to flesh out its display of these symbols would give the players a way to show off their allegiances.
This symbol could then either be worn as an emblem or (preferably) some how made into a class item that would inherit the custom traits chosen by the clan founder.
These items/emblems should be available for purchase and should only be wearable when registered with a specific clan. Which bring me to the next piece the Clan Master (Vender). Giving these items in-game uses other than aesthetics.
Clan Master (Vendor):
Like any vendor this clan specific vendor would have a system of reputation and marks. These would be gained when wearing the class item / emblem proposed in the previous section, much like the existing factions.
The reputation ranks would unlock tiers of materials and currency for purchase FOR YOUR CLAN from the vendor. And could also control access to my third piece the Clan Vault which I'll describe shortly.
The rank tiers of purchasable items might go something like this:
Rank 0 - Cost X glimmer for Y marks + Z reputation + N pack of:
Common Materials (ex Class Materials, Weapon Parts)
Rank 1 - Cost X glimmer for Y marks + Z reputation + N pack of:
Common Planet Materials (ex Spinmetal, Relic Iron, etc)
Rank 2 - Cost X glimmer for Y marks + Z reputation + N pack of:
Rare Currency (ex Motes of Light, Strange Coins)
Rank 3 - Cost X glimmer for Y marks + Z reputation + N pack of:
Legendary Materials
At this point I'm sure you are like what!!! NO. Why would we let people buy currency and materials. I hope you will continue reading as I will try to explain.
First as I implied before purchasing these packs will not give the currency and material directly to the player it will put it in their Clan Vault. Which brings us to the Clan Vault.
Clan Vault:
The Clan Vault is my way of promoting Clan Allegiance encouraging player loyalty and building strong communities. I see 3 possible ways (although only 2 that I'm sold on) that a Clan Vault can grow.
Vendor Purchases - As I mentioned before the ability to Donate through purchase of packs from the Clan Master.
Direct Donation - Make a way (possibly through the vendor) to directly donate a specific type and quantity of materials. I'm not sold on this mechanic however this might work to have it go through the Clan Master allowing Direct Donations to earn Reputation and Marks as well
Earned Contributions - Build in a system to the post game reward screen that will allow a random chance of earning materials for your clan simply by playing. Must be wearing clan item/emblem. Possibly give higher chance for rewards based on the number of clan mates partied up.
Ok now we got all these materials, and currency in a shared clan specific vault. How does it come out?
Well I think that the vault should be more of a purchasing system of its own. I think there is potential for a couple different ways of doing this but the easiest might be simply locking down the Clan Vault for purchase until you are a specific rank, lets say Rank 3. With an alternative of unlocking different tiers of what you can purchase with the different Ranks.
The purchasing would then use Clan Marks as the currency for Vault extraction. Balancing the Costs would be your (read Bungie's) job to figure out.
Clan Switching
What about people abusing this by switching clans? There is a simple and easy way to deal with this. If a player switch clans make the Clan Item/Emblem unusable for the previous clan, perform a wipe of their reputation and marks making them start anew.
Wrap up
I need to first say I do not believe in player to player trading (at least not of gear) however I believe that this system would provide the players with a way to help friends out in an indirect and game centric way. At the same time it provides a remedy to a major complaint of the game that there is too much farming, by providing an alternative means to continue your progress. I am sure there are many details that need to go into this however I think this would be a good start.
