It was ridiculous how many copies there were. Even a bunch of fully clad collector and ghost edition formats. These were people who bought the marketing, bought the hype, bought the game - and have promptly returned it.
To be honest I thought gripes about Destiny not lasting past December far-fetched. But I swear I saw over 50 returned copies in one CBD EB games, and that says nothing to how many more they had out back.
This is a really worrying sign for the games long term future.
The gunplay is great. The story is (what story?) abysmal. The matchmaking is non-existent. The customisation options promised are Eva Lavantés two shaders. The colour of almost every ship is poop brown. And the stuff ups with engrams, RNG and over-zealous nerfing have pushed a lot of early players over the edge. It feels like there is a lack of content and a lot of cut content - far from what was 'promised' by E3 reveals and marketing. What now?
tl;dr The game appears to be in trouble - is there any way Destiny can come back from this? What would Destiny need to do to 'save' this game for you, and keep you playing for the next 10 years? What keeps you playing now?
EDIT: Wow, a lot of hate in here. Calm the blam! down. Please be constructive if you have the capacity. Some are telling me this is no big deal, others are saying it's sympotatic of the disappointment Destiny has been. Who knew there'd be differences in a gaming community hey?
If you're going to comment don't be a donkey about it - leave your entitled sarcasm at the door.
EDIT 2: Dark Below DLC released for December 9th, but only comes with 3 new story missions :/

There are still EB game stores? Does your town have a blockbusters too?

Destiny...in trouble? Ruh Roh !

Oh look another one of these theeads

I feel like I put enough hours in to give a legitimate response. On the way to level 20 you start noticing how repetitive it can get. But getting that new weapon or armor and then upgrading them keeps you coming back. This game is riddled with glitches/problems, but still very fun non the less. I have gotten my moneys worth out of it that's for sure. Not very many games can keep me hooked 100+. But what they were pushing at E3 last year, is completely different than what we got today.
-
This is what happens when people get hyped over a genre they've never played before. This game isn't meant for the CoD audience, it's meant for people that want that touch of rpg/mmo.
-
The game is undeniably fun to play. My problem, is There's no reason to play it. I have all I care to get from the game as far as loot, I've beaten all the content in the game multiple times, and I've had my fill of the special weapon fest that is the crucible. I think a lot of people are having the same problem. There's just not a reason to play. There is no new content coming, and none will come likely until December with the first dlc. A lot of people would rather take it back nd get as much as they can, instead of Wait 3 months for another 3 week long fix.

I'll be at the local game stop this weekend pre ordering Far Cry 4 (3.5 from the looks of the demo). I'm curious to see if there is a lot of copies of Destiny on the shelf. I've already purchased the DLC and will be playing it, but Far Cry will take a lot of my time, so will DA Inquisition. If the DLC I've already purchased isn't very good then that will be the end of me buying DLC at full price and I'll wait for it to go in sale. Whoever decided to release this game in September should get a raise. At least some of this games success is that it was released when there was not much else out there. I've been hooked to some extent, logged many hours but largely because there is nothing else out right now. Had there been other games out for PS4, I may have returned this game.

as long as I can play it I'm satisfied I don't care about those whiners :-)
-
That's weird because I just went to my local Gamestop and didn't even find a used Destiny game to purchase
-
I like the game. I would kill to see more story, not the grimoire bullshit, and for god's sake fix the bugs. People weren't just cheesing Aetheon because they're lazy ... most of the time glitches wipe the team out. How the hell is that going to encourage people? Yeah, let's do something that we'll fail on a million times because the developers can't get their shit straight. They can nerf guns, baby bumper the boss, and release a halloween thing yet not fix those bugs.
-
I think I would just have to be able to complete a Nightfall strike or raid without half of us getting kicked out for error code monkey. Also everyone finished the game what does Bungie care that people give up after 2 months they made their money. I already have almost all achieves, too much other stuff coming out COD. Halo, WoW Xpac.
-
I'm going to go ahead and predict the servers will have about 25% of the players that were originally here after Christmas...too any other great-looking games coming out this holiday. Makes me so sad...I've already dropped to playing this game MAYBE once a week. I assumed I'd be playing almost everyday for years, like I was with the Halo games.

Edited by BrokenLance: 10/29/2014 2:06:45 AMa niche game for a niche crowd think you saw a lot of copies now? let's see, COD in a week, TWO assassin's creed games in the next, Dragon Age the week after that, far cry etc, yeah it don't look good. being that for the hardcore gamers this is a once a week game and finding a vog team will be a pain, anyone who doesn't have a constant raiding group will have to play with noobs and bads and wipe a lot, likely having them move on as well. it's an interesting case study so far to be sure. the next few weeks will be VERY interesting.

Haha but it obviously gonna happen. Wait till some decent games out, there will be entire walls dedicated to second hand destiny

The game was advertised to be for everyone and was over-hyped on that basis to be an absolute masterpiece. We got a game for a community used to the idea of grinding and the idea that a patch can create new and potentially game-breaking bugs. Doesn't help much that Bungie's focusing on things that can be viewed as exploits and overall QoL and stability of gameplay instead of big flashy "Here! Everyone gets good stuff, pat on your back good sir!". The recent patches are viewed negatively for these things. A) Cave farm, there are more efficient ways, but nope! I'm going to sit at a cave! (Silly fools, they know not the real tasty methods/areas.) B) Templar snipes, "It was never meant to be easy". All that's needed in my opinion, it's Endgame content, not your quick run through Taco Bell. C) Vex Mythoclast, This one was a major boon to the overall QoL in-game! Making other primary weapons viable over the AR Master Race (I love my Vanquisher VIII, but I wanted to have a reason to enjoy my other weapons as well for differing builds.). However the Vex nerf was a serious loss in PvE and everyone's still rustled in the jimmy despite the fact Bungie's saying there's a re-buff coming and that balance changes are a thing in live games for a reason. Another flaw in this update was the maintained superiority of the Suros. D) Mostly said many QoL changes are coming, however this one also hit like a truck to many, but this is a RAID. Made for hard-core players and not for the weak/faint of heart.

There's a small minority of people that hate this game and will return their copy. As the polls indicate at least 80% enjoy destiny and will stick with it. I don't care what your opinion is or how much you hate this game, the numbers don't lie. Personally I love this game and will never return my copy. The game has only been out for almost two months, people will overreact and then realize what a stupid mistake they made by returning their copy. Bungie is working hard on solving the current issues with this game and it can only get better.
-
I love the grind life, but if they want it to be a ten year game they're going to have to keep events fresh and new every week. High hope for the dlc but know most likely it will be the same #SadGuardianFace

Edited by RedEcho: 10/28/2014 9:13:08 AMSo I went and got FallOut:New Vegas and all its DLC for less than 8 USD at my local Gamestop. The last time I played this game was 4 years ago. It is a great game even now. It helps to fill the void that Destiny left in my heart.
-
Its the current generation they have no staying power and get bored with a game before they even truely play it.
-
I love playing it but the community wanting everything to be nerfed and chaned I think has put bungie into overdrive and now they are throwing all these changes around over zealously . I don't care bout atheon having baby bumpers but ars getting nerfed and soon probably shotguns and fusion rifles not just the mythoclast as well as 3 random teleports in raid. I don't know man I'll see where it goes but they are finally starting to push me closer to the edge
-
yeah im about to return my ghost edition myself.. Im trying to keep it until next DLC and see what happens but the game is SOOOOO boring..Im trying to stay inby making a new character but already its boring plus having to do the same lame missions over again was depressing. Im so happy i bought a disk copy tho because at least i can get some of my money back..Activision ruined this game for me ....all about PVP and trying to make it into another COD franchises.. welp back to my titanfall and wait for AC untiy
-
my copy is heading back to the shop had enough of destiny its a let down.after the latest update the game is a ball ache.bungie listen to your community
-
The problem is people won't wait to see what this game will become, they are judging it on what it is now, this is a brand new franchise let it get past the crawl and start to walk before properly judging it. Another thing is people were expecting a pure FPS but this is an MMO as well and FPS players generally want their gear there and then but in this you kind of have to grind which is putting them off.
-
I could believe it, its a reptitive game and people are sick of the same 5 strikes and 2 game types

Edited by eternal_napalm: 10/29/2014 1:11:31 AMAfter todays random teleport patch ruining Vault of Glass, I think the answer is a resounding NO. 10 years lmfao.
