Alright, so let me put it simply like this: Destiny is a Genre-confused game. That's right, I made a play on words that is actually really fitting. Lets just look at the facts: Bungie has practically bent over backwards to make sure Destiny is an FPS, which with their concentration on PvP, they have very much succeeded in this, something I think most Players would agree to. Now lets look at it's other aspects: There is gear, loot, and a leveling system, just like an RPG, but not enough story to make it one, also something I think everyone can agree with me on. The game has a zone that is called a social zone, and yet the only socializing that can down there besides sending each other messages through the console message system. I know that Bungie has claimed that they are working on fixing that problem, but if/when they do finally manage it, it will be a very strong point towards the game being like a MMO. While out in the field, you can run into other players doing other missions, this is also alot like a MMO, only no way to socially interact other than things usually used as visual emoticons by other social games. One can "party up" wit other players which is something much more common in MMOs than it is in FPSs or RPGs. Their are raids and raids are things that I've only ever seen in MMORPGs, they are the vital essence of a MMORPGs life... There are all these things that make Destiny look like some kind of new genre- a FPSMMORPG, a concept I believe would be epic, but here's the problem with calling it that genre.
In the Crucible, the PvP of the entire game, there is no battle type that allows you, level, gear and loot to make much more than a lick of good for ya, which is something all FPS games strive to achieve where as MMORPG games celebrate such a thing even for PvP which is why a level 4 taking on a team of level 29's and winning is counter-intuitive to those of us familiar with both MMO and RPG game types. This alone shows that the game was intended to be a FPS but there's still more that shows this fact like what has happened to the raid equipment. Raid equipment is supposed to be the best of the best, especially if it's an event raid that only happens every now and then, but the raid equipment in Destiny is kind of underwhelming for the most part. The raid armors are set as legendary gear, which is understandable since the game already restricts the amount of exotic gear you can wear, which is kind of odd if you ask me but that's a different topic. The point is that there is no exotic raid armor, none, in fact it's easier to buy exotic armor than it is to find/earn it through the raid, this is something that you don't see in MMO's, in fact, most raids have a set of armor that is of the highest rarity class of the game as well as a weapon set (most MMO's use different weapon types- sword, dagger, greatsword, axe, greataxe, ect., ect. so there'd be one of each type found from a raid), but we don't really get that from Destiny's first raid, maybe we will later, I don't know, I suppose we'll find out. That said, there is, in fact, exotic weapons that you can get from Destiny's first raid, I don't know all of them but the one in particular that I do know has been a source for anguish recently, the Vex Mythoclast. Now Players who are pure PvP FPS players, were upset by the fact that such a weapon quite literally broke the FPS part of the game, which is to be expected, it is the hardest weapon to obtain and is supposed to be OP'd, so Bungie nerfed the gun, which for PvP, was expected. The problem is that Bungie ALSO nerfed the weapon for PvE, the almost-but-not-quite MMORPG aspect of the game, this caused outrage from the Players who are mostly PvE players, which is to be expected- it's the hardest weapon to get in the game, it is supposed to be OP'd, and no one feels sorry for aliens who are trying to destroy our three collective species. This is not an acceptable nerf for PvE players, especially when it made the Suros Regime, an exotic auto-rifle which you can buy from the once a week exotic merchant, more powerful than the gun that should be OP'd. This entire situation is another show of how the game is supposed to be a FPS, but still is more than just that, which shows that Bungie must be aware of this since they are working to un-nerf the PvE form of the Mythoclast while keeping it's PvP form nerfed. Another Reason that Destiny is not quite a MMO is that they have Players separated by servers not only for areas but by console as well. I've heard a reason for both the non-mixing of trans-generation consoles (like PS3 to PS4 playing together) as well as the non-mixing of trans-company consoles (like Xbox and PlayStation) but I also have counter arguments to such things. First up is the trans-Generation gaming. Apparently Bungie didn't want people playing on a PS4 mixing it up in the Crucible with people playing on a PS3 because the PS4's refresh rate gives them a minor advantage, this makes sense in the Crucible, I suppose, but what about PvE? It's not gonna cause any problems there because, once more, no one feels sorry for aliens trying to wipe us out. Why not let trans-generation console players play together in PvE, and then put up a buffer for PvP, like when a fire team with one or more people playing with a different generation console tries to go PvP, it brings up that "can't launch" flag? I don't think that would be too hard. And as far as trans-company consoles go, the only reason I've heard it wasn't happening is because it would be a bad for business. I can't tell you how much such a thing irritates me, corporate affairs are starting to interfere with my game experience? Really? That's not something that should be taken sitting down. but then there's this little tidbit of information- FF11 was made so that you could play with anyone playing on either a Xbox 360, PC, or a PS2, that's three different platforms there, why can't Bungie do the same? Honestly, that's a question I'd like an answer to, I can't help feeling I'd feel better just knowing why.
All in all, these are the reasons I see Destiny as a "genre-confused" game. Destiny is definitely a completed FPS game, but is an incomplete MMORPG. I don't think it'd take much to make it a complete one, just alot more story (I hope we don't have to pay for every installment since I feel that there should have been more from the beginning but whatever I suppose), A variety of PvP that is actually completely level and gear enabled, not like the nerfed Iron Banner one (though you may wanna make a larger variety of OP'd weapons or something because at this point... yeah, Suros Regime's, everywhere...), and more Player-to-Player communication abilities (like why not have team, area, and world channels, though DTR(http://destinytracker.com/) has basically made your world channel, so yeah), and you'd have yourself at least most of the way to birthing a FPSMMORPG and letting Destiny finally figure out it's identity.
Also, what I've just suggested, is what most people who pre-ordered the game were expecting, so you'd probably quiet down the community alot as well, Personally I've come to terms with the fact that the game can't figure out what it wants to be yet, I play it with the same attitude I would a beta, but that doesn't mean I don't hope it'll become everything it can be someday. Questions, comments, concerns, suggestions, feedback... Criticism, lay it on me community (except please leave criticizing my writing form to my old English teachers, thank you, I know it's probably terrible)
