I got my first exotic bounty a few days ago, and I chose to go for Thorn. I knew that when I started it the PVP was going to be a pain. I underestimated just how crappy the PVP aspect would be. No I will admit I'm not a great PVP player and I prefer distance over close range. But having tried over 2 dozen matches since getting it I'm sitting at 16/500. I realized several things since starting this bounty.
For those of you who don't know the PVP requirements for Thorns Bounty are this: You must accrue 500 points in Crucible Matches using only Void based Weapon (The purple swirl next to the weapon damage). You gain +5 Points for a kill with a Void Weapon. You loose -2 for every death. Assist do not add any points. Damaging an opponent with a Void weapon and then killing him by other means (i.e. melee or someone else killing him) does not grant points.
1) Chances are you will be using a Special Weapon. Only another Exotic Primary Weapon will have Void Damage. You cannot rely on the Void Heavy Weapon to contribute to your score consistently due to ammo constraints.
2) That there is only 1 ranged weapon that does Void Damage, the sniper rifle. Both the shotgun and the fusion rifle are both extreme close range.
3) I believe there are only 2 Large maps in PVP. This makes distance fighting extremely difficult for those of us who play ranged and not close engagements.
4) Special Weapons have ammo constraints. Yes there are numerous ammo crates around, but it is still a factor.
5) Teammates can be extremely unreliable. I've had numerous matches of teammates who just leave and/or stand there and do nothing.
6) Unbalanced teams. We have all encountered this. Many matches are so one-sided to be considered laughable.
Another consideration is that I think this is the most difficult mission on any of the Exotic Weapon Bounties. Completing 25 Strikes, Complete 5 Strikes without dying, Deconstruct Fusion rifles, Kill 200 Enemies in Nightfall Strike with a Fusion Rifle. These are all the hardest missions for numerous Exotic Bounties. Only 1 bounty has anything even remotely similar and it's for the Invictus. Get a K/D ratio of 25 (which includes assists) in the Crucible. A overall 25 K/D in Crucible including assists is the only other step in a Exotic Bounty where you can backtrack on your progress. But even still the amount of effort and time you would have to put into even if it was reset to 0.0 is not comparable to the reset that can happen from a bad match in crucible. If you don't want to loose those points from a bad team match-up you have to leave the game. I do not consider that to be fair to the other players in the match, that I should have to bail to save my bounty from any further damage.
Now for the reason I'm writing this is because this afternoon when I started playing PVP I was 40/500. I played for over an hour in Crucible and I'm now 16/500. Mostly because I never had a single Large map and the smallest gap in our teams loss was by 3500 points on a control match.
I would think the Developers should consider reviewing and nerfing the current bounty for Thorn - A Light in the Dark. I think the best way to make the bounty more realistic is to remove the death penalty and make it a straight kill count. I think 150 to 200 kills in Crucible would be reasonable. I think that either giving credit for assists and reducing the number of total points needed is a viable change as well.
Thanks for any of you who stuck through this whole wall of words. Any support is greatly appriciated.

People need to stop complaining about this bounty. It took me like 5 hours to do all of it.

Atheons Epilogue
-
It is by far the hardest bounty yet ,but once you complete it you will realize its not really that bad . the PvP part was definitely the worse part of it .
-
I understand your frustration. I had this bounty last week and I deleted it for the same reason. And I got the fusion exotic bounty this week...so much easier. However, I realized it is doable and I suggest you and 2 of your friends going in a rumble match and playing that way. That way you're playing with your friends so you won't stress as much cause you'll be having fun (hopefully) and you guys can talk to eachother too. You'll get the points much quicker that way. Hey and maybe they'll let you just keep killing them. :-)
-
I can't wait to see you complaining when you actually get this and then you have to kill Xyor. You are just not skilled, plain and simple. You have to get better at the game. If your teammates quit out and you are going to keep dying, then quit the game. If you don't have the proper weapons, keep this bounty to the side until you can get sufficient weapons that do void damage. Your points are invalid, I did it in less then 10 games with only a void fusion rifle.
-
dude this is only you... I finished it in about 15 games It's an exotic it's suppose to be hard so don't complain
-
Quit sucking at the game and you'll be at 500. If I did it you can go blam your selfish self
-
FFS another sook crying about thorns bounty. Either get a void shotgun, do the raid for atheons epilogue or scrap it. It took me about an hour and a half to get the 500 with a shotty. It's not that freakin hard.
-
Edited by Godin: 10/24/2014 11:43:32 PMAtheon's Epilogue (Raid primary) does void, among others....... But yea, I get your point. EDIT: Hold up; none of those are "hard": 1- completing a strike without dying is child's play.Summoning pits all day long. 2- Again, summoning pits, 8 minutes 25 times is 3 hrs. and 20 minutes. 3- That's not even a right desc. It's more like get 25 points, kills and assists gives you 1 point, and dying loses you a point (in which case grab a shotty and some nades). 4- Finding the fusion Rifles is much harder; I did that part with a uncommon Fusion Rifle. If you think those parts are hard, you have issues.
-
It's the hardest because thorn is the best exotic you get from the bounties.

I Just Wonder with some comment here how many ADULTS are playing this game. The level of immaturity in the comments here are surprising. If u good in pvp good for u but not everybody have skills or enjoy pvp. So try show some little respect to others before giving harsh word No i aint good with pvp, why I am still playing? Just waiting for november 18 for dragon age inquisition.

I did the thorn bounty in 3 hours weren't that hard tbf
-
I think you should just stop being shit. Its an exotic weapon its not meant to be easy
-
I did it in 2 hours last night playing skirmish with atheons and a void machine gun heavy. It wasnt as difficult as I thought it would be
-
The objective isnt something they threw in there to let you earn the weapon "your way". They give you a set task, if you choose to go about this in an inefficient way that is YOUR CHOICE. Or you could suck it up and go "ok I want to get this done. how can I do so most effectively". Again if you are choosing to do this the hard way thats on you, not a problem with the bounty. When I had it I picked up a void fusion rifle and a void MG (even though that was not my normal weapons). I pretty much ignored my primary weapon and had it done in probably around 6-8 matches.
-
It's not that hard. Get yourself a shotgun with void and go kill people. I did it with a level 18 shotgun I got from my buddy banshee and I got it in about 15 matches
-
I'm not trying to be conceited or anything, but I'm a below average player and got 300+ points in 2 hours. I really never thought it was THAT difficult.
-
Yea it sucks I'm hoping I can just talk someone on the other team into letting me kill them a bunch. Sometimes my fireteam gets put on different teams. That's the only way I could see getting it. No matter how many hours I put in I'm still at 0 at the end of it all because basically I suck at pvp
-
Okay man it's official, stop whining bro. I just did this in one night..... Just stay alive man - simple

Vote here regarding exotic weapon bounties: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/70824470/0/0
-
Yeah I thought that was ridiculous when I did it but I'm or its good at pop and it only took me like 3 to 5 days to do it so that sucked
-
The entire purpose is to make it challenging or everyone will complain it's way to easy, like previous post just wait until the next step of the bounty. Xyor is in the 4th fleet of wizards on level 26 and you need an entire fire team. I've never had a problem completing them only one that's taking time is the fusion rifle dismantle since I haven't been getting those as drops.
-
My strategy was getting the black chasma( shotgun) from the crucible and just sliding around barrel stuffing people and then switched to sniper for the moon map. It probably took around 3 hours until I got it.
-
I got my Thorn bounty when Salvage gamer type was up… I averaged 130 points to the bounty a game. Not so much skill as luck that my opponents were terrible. All up for me who sticks to PvE as much as possible except for PvP bounties it took me about 2 hours from getting the bounty to getting Thorn

Edited by FromNowOn: 10/24/2014 4:21:37 AMDude come on this is a great opportunity to experience PVP and to use other weapons you may not usually use (or level for that matter) AND to get some Crucible marks AND rep for factions...... Need I go on?? Dude let's try not to complain about getting cool stuff in-game.. The harder it is to get, the more rewarding it is, and the more rewarding it is, the more likely you are to actually use it!! Even if it ends up being crap or not your style or whatever at least you can tell your buds in a load screen that you got it and sharded it like a badass.... Basically, your Destiny (both in life and in-game lol) is defined by what you consider productive and worthwhile and what engages your passions and all that jazz - next time just google it man, and say "shit doods I'm not into PvP, but I rly want Thorn broz!" AND JUST MAKE WHATEVER -blam!-ING DECISION DUDE JUST DON'T BRING YOUR MEANINGLESS TROLLHATE HEEEEERE UGH

Atheon's epilogue is a legendary void primary, not exotic. Available from normal raid as well as hard. Strongly suggest you consider using the shot gun. Yes it's not your normal play style, but the point of this bounty is to push you to a new challenge. On smaller maps the shotgun will bring you through while you wait on shores of time. You can switch in the initial load screen and retain starting amo Don't forget void ability kills also count. Use a Lmg not a rocket as the Lmg will generate more kills per amo pick up.
