I believe that not including voice comms was a major oversight in destiny. The reasoning behind this was stated that the dev's were afraid of a negative community experience as has been the case is COD, or Halo during online play. A mute player button fixes this problem really quick, and as such, I 'be personally never had a problem online.
Conversely, if all match made activities supported voice comms, them those of us still looking for friends online could actually meet some fellow killers and finally break the lock on the VoG. A 10-20 min strike is a good chance to get a first impression of someone.
