What Should Bungie Do to Integrate Knowledge More Closely With Gameplay?
Apropos the idea of some kind of library in the Tower and the necessity of looking up resources to better understand the game. (bear with me. I don't want to confuse too many issues here.)
Let's put aside what is rather essential to the story. The story is obviously lacking in serious ways. The Grimoire stands alone as a decent, albeit encyclopedic (some people just hate reading) feature, but one that shouldn't have superceded the basic plot experienced in gameplay.
It's an intriguing idea, but what sort of content, such as appears in the Grimoire, should be more closely accessible? Would better mobile software make navigating the Grimoire more pleasant?
It's true that all the best software, including games, takes into consideration what is intuitive and trains the user to naturally incorporate new functions in ways that are progressive, e.g. "What is my next logical desired action?" and "What about unusual, unexpected, and less probable actions?" But this game is not a simple action-adventure game with one path of progression. It is open, highly customizeable, and requires the manipulation of a lot of parameters to master.
So, yes there are some good ideas to make the knowledge of the game more accessible, but I also like the resources online. I like that they are here -- with all the forums, group / clan features, profiles and stats, etc.-- to be easily referred to. I look at the grimoire content on my phone or my PS Vita like it's a navigation terminal I take into battle.
In short, I like the idea of accessing a knowledge-base in the game while remembering that I don't want everything handed to me so that it becomes meaningless (do-this-now type dissemination). I also shouldn't have to purchase an additional manual from Prima or some special edition merchandise just for the convenience of organization for my lazy ass when I could at least have something like a wiki or man pages.
