If you're actually wondering this, I think I get it. It's basically just an effect. The ship doesn't actually fly backwards; it slows down before turning toward the planet, but the "camera" (our POV in orbit) that is watching it maintains the same speed. We're not just sitting in one spot above the planet, we're orbiting it at a particular speed. Thus, when the ship slows down from that speed, it looks like it flies backwards before diving to the planet.
This kind of just happens normally in real situations and movies with similar situations, so they've made sure it's consistent here as well to make it feel more real. And it looks cool!
