Help me figure this out

I'm trying to understand why Destiny deserves all the hype it does for all this "added content". I seriously don't get why we're expected to be excited for things like Skirmish, Salvage, The Iron Banner, etc... If Halo 5 were to ship with nothing but Slayer and Territories for multiplayer, but would eventually let us play a different gametype every once in a while, would it be as "groundbreaking" as Destiny? Same goes for things like The Queen's Wrath: their "unique mission" is just a randomly picked campaign mission that is fed a modifier that you're not allowed to apply yourself from the start: would Halo be unique if they took out all skulls, and only let you play with modifiers every few weeks? I'd understand if Destiny had a wealth of content, and then they held events that had extra content, but that's not the case. It really just seems like the developers took a full game, shipped only a fraction of it, and expect people to be excited when the missing pieces (like a whopping third multiplayer gametype, or a campaign modifier or two) get introduced later on. Unless there are some ridiculously massive amount of new (not DLC) events, why is anyone getting excited when most other games have so much more?
