This is the reason Bungie don't want to put more stories in the game, we can crack this out instead of just listening to the Ghost... This is way more fun
I think it's fun too. I've always had fun researching the deeper stories of Bungie's previous games. For Marathon and Halo there was the surface story, and then there were puzzle pieces scattered through the world to hint at a deeper, richer story. There has always been a segment of the fan community that gathers together and tries to put all of the pieces together and figure out the bigger picture.
In Destiny, we are given only the essential information in the story missions because it reflects our characters. We're Guardians, we have been reborn to act as killing machines. We exist to be pointed in the right direction and destroy anything in our path. It's up to the individual to look deeper into the world around them, to seek out the information hidden all around us, to try to figure out the many mysteries, to get together and work with other Guardians in order to put it all together (like we're doing in threads like this one).
Unfortunately, this method of storytelling isn't to everyone's taste, and so it seems like some are complaining about it and are claiming there is no story. I don't see it that way, I think the extra steps to seek out and decipher this information makes it a more personal experience. But this is a matter of opinion, so it's understandable why some would not enjoy it.
Oh well. I'm having fun with this, so I guess that's all that should matter.
