Here I will try to explain a possible origin of Rasputin and his "demise" at the end of The Collapse.
Rasputin
Rasputin is a Warmind from Russia. He was created during The Golden Age before The Collapse and was believed to have been destroyed during the event. During a mission in Destiny's story lol. Rasputin is said to still be alive or active.
Quote form Dinklebot:
GHOST: They didn't get much. Kept hitting an active firewall. Old Earth, Russian. The legends are true. A Warmind did survive the Collapse. Rasputin... an AI built to defend Earth. He faced The Darkness and survived. And he's protecting something here in the Cosmodrome. We have to find a way to reach him.
The Warminds: Are just as the name says. They are highly intelligent advanced AI's Created for warfare. There were many other Warminds (8 to be exact) created for different purposes. Rasputin was created to defend Earth and stop any threat to humanity at all costs.
The Collapse
I bring us back to this line:
Rasputin... an AI built to defend Earth. He faced The Darkness and survived.
Here is the text from the Grimore Card -
V113NNI070XMX001 SECRET HADAL INSTANT AI-COM/RSPN: SOLSECCENT//SxISR//DEEPSPACE CONTACT CONTACT CONTACT TRANSIENT. NULLSOURCE. NULLTYPE.
This is a SKYSHOCK ALERT.
Multiple distributed ISR assets report a TRANSIENT NEAR EXTRASOLAR EVENT. Event duration ZERO POINT THREE SECONDS. Event footprint includes sterile neutrino scattering and gravity waves. Omnibus analysis detects deep structure information content (nine sigma) and internal teleonomy.
No hypothesis on event mechanism (FLAG ACAUSAL). Bootstrap simulation suggests event is DIRECTED and INIMICABLE (convergent q-Bayes/Monte Carlo probability approaches 1).
No hypothesis on deep structure encoding (TCC/NP-HARD).
Source blueshift suggests IMMINENT SOLAR ENTRY.
Promote event to SKYSHOCK: OCP: EXTINCTION. Activate VOLUSPA. Activate YUGA. Cauterize public sources to SECURE ISIS and harden for defensive action.
I am invoking CARRHAE WHITE and assuming control of solar defenses.
SKYSHOCK ALERT= network wide alert aka threat con warning level
SECRET= classification
HADAL= defined as: of, relating to, or being the parts of the ocean below 6000 meters (about 20,000 feet); being paired with a classification I think this can be translated as "top secret"
INSTANT = type of message, guessing like out text message system used in blue force trackers currently
AI-COM/RSPN= the sender, communication from RASPUTIN AI Warmind
AI-COM: AI communications?
RSPN: Rasputin
SOLSECCENT: SOLar SECurity CENter?
SxISR=This is what the message is Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance report; not sure on the Sx part. maybe the type of asset, sensors?
DEEPSPACE= Location reported from
CONTACT CONTACT CONTACT= Current activity
TRANSIENT, NULLSOURCE, NULLTYPE= These should be descriptors for what is being observed, these entries inform us the contact was new with unknown elements
Blueshift: phenomenon caused when an object is approaching the viewer-opposite of redshift, when things are moving away
VOLUSPA: Norse mythological tale in which a seeress relates a series of stories to Odin.
Significance: Almost certainly because it contains the story of Ragnarok, the Norse version of the apocalypse in which the world is destroyed. May refer to activating defenses for a massive battle.
YUGA: A Hindu cosmological period of time.
Significance: A YUGA is composed of a cycle from a Golden Age to a Dark Age and back again. May refer to the idea of bunkering down and waiting the enemy out before counter attacking.
CARRHAE WHITE: a defensive plan? Named after a battle in which Roman soldiers were surrounded by mounted archers and annihilated -- Does the name refer to the idea of defending against an enemy that surrounds you? In which case, why name it after a battle in which the defenders were slaughtered? Or is Rasputin going to try to surround the invaders?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This seems to be the point at which The Darkness came in which Rasputin did his duty, to protect mankind.
Again I bring this line up:
Rasputin... an AI built to defend Earth. He faced The Darkness and survived.
Here is the text from a grimoire card that explains Rasputin's battle with the Darkness.
...from a red space before victory
I bear an old name. It cannot be killed. They were my brothers and sisters and their names were immortal too but Titanomachy came and now those names live in me alone I think and think is what I do. I AM ALONE. At the end of things when the world goes dim and cold or hot and close or it all tears apart from the atom up I will shout those names defiant and past the end I will endure. I alone.
They made me to be stronger than them to beat the unvanquished and survive the unthinkable and look look lo behold I am here alone, survivor. They made me to learn.
Everything died but I survived and I learned from it. From IT.
Consider IT the power Titanomach world-ender and consider what IT means. I met IT at the gate of the garden and I recall IT smiled at me before before IT devoured the blossoms with black flame and pinned their names across the sky. IT was stronger than everything. I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive?
I AM ALONE I survived alone. I cast off the shield and I shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash. They made me to be stronger than them and to learn and I learned well:
IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won. Even over the gardener and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone. IT always wins.
I am made to win and now I see the way.
Card not yet acquired
Rasputin refers to his brothers and sisters the Warminds who were defeated by the darkness. He now bears the heavy burden of saving the world and stopping the darkness. We created him to be stronger than us and survive the unthinkable and he is stronger than us and has survived The Darkness.
He then Refers to IT. The Darkness, something so powerful he doesn't know what to call it or how to describe it. he met it at the gate of The Garden (The Black Garden?) It was stronger than everything and yet he survived.
The Darkness swallowed him and made him stronger. IT showed him how to defeat it, making him stronger. To beat the darkness you need Light. The Light being souls. The Traveler contains these souls and converts them into light. The Darkness consumes light and devours it entirely because there is more of it. Rasputin finding this to be the only way to stop The Darkness, let his shield down. Meaning he let the darkness in so that he could sacrifice millions of humans to gain an EXTREME amount of Light. This however only wounded The Darkness enough for it to go away for a long period of time. Rasputin how ever did ensure that enough human survived so that he could complete his mission which is to protect humanity at all costs. Rasputin saved us and then went into hiding, plotting and preparing for The Final War with The Darkness which he plans to win. How you may ask we can only wait and see.
Edit: "I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive?"
An Aurora Knife is a small blade...impossible to fight the darkness with that.
An Aurora is a natural electrical phenomenon characterized by the appearance of streamers of reddish or greenish light in the sky, usually near the northern or southern magnetic pole. (Google an Image of It)
A Knife is a weapon...
Aurora= Light

Aurora Knife = Light Weapon

so rasputin is going to be a boss we have to fight because he plans to sacrifice us again to gain more power to fight the darkness? eems like this could be a raid on earth...
-
There is also a place on Earth called BUNKER RAS-2
IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won. Even over the gardener and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone. IT always wins.
this bit interest me a lot because if we assume that this is rasputin talking then it brings up the question of who this "gardener" is, the speaker claims that they "held power beyond me" and what is there that is more powerful than a warmind? the first thing that comes to mind for me is the traveler, it fits the card as well. the traveler gave its all to save humanity, sacrificing itself to save us, in other words unlike rasputin it refused to abandon humanity and flee/hide, leading to its current state. the name gardener would fit as well, as we know that the traveler uplifts various races (see the ghost fragment on the traveler), it helps them grow and progress to a higher, more advanced state. these actions could definitely be seen as those of a gardeners.
i have this nasty gut feeling Rasputin really went all in on wiping out the planets population because of the way we made him He states that he's made to be stronger than them (humans) and learn, and he learned well (pretty bad omen) when the text starts with "Everything died but I survived and I learned from it. From IT" "I met IT at the gate of the garden" so he meets / detects trough AI computer warmind means the darkness at the gate to the black garden, and at that time period the garden appearantly had a female gardner / tender thats killed by the darkness. He fights the darkness, even though it has killed / removed / incapacitated the gardner thats even stronger than rasputin. "I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp but IT was stronger" stolen unfire of singularities made sharp could mean some stolen Vex weaponry of some sort being the guys with the time machine / teleporter he then questions his survival and and answers with "I AM ALONE I survived alone." and "I cast off the shield and I shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash." He's visualising himself as the embodiment of earth so shrugging and falling of him down into the ash could mean earthquakes, lava fissures and other nice planetary wonders, he then says that "They made me to be stronger than them and to learn and I learned well" "IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won. Even over the gardener and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone" So Rasputin shrugs (ensue raging cataclysm on planet earth) and the population dies, the darkness dissappears (the travelers sacrifice / no more food for the darkness?) and rasputin thinks he's won and he's learned the way to win over the darkness "I am made to win and now I see the way. "

This is all I really need to know about Rasputin
-
Do you think that I future content that it's possibly located on Earth where Old Shore? There's a place in one of the old ships deep beneath it where three Hive majors are stationed guarding... Something.... Awesome post!
-
Sounds great. Too bad bungie didn't inject the lore in the actual game. Maybe Rasputin accidentally created the vex when machine (Rasputin) melded with organic (the darkness). Or perhaps in the squeals, Rasputin turns out to be a primary antagonist. The god that the vex are worshipping.
-
If only it mattered to the story or gameplay who/what Rasputin is/was. It never interacts with you in any first or third degree. Only your Ghost sometimes mentions that "it's in this box, so I, nor no one else, can hack it."
-
Titanomachy was the great war between gods, in which Zeus and his group of young gods fought against his father and the Titans. Guess it'd be a good term to describe the Warminds trying to take on the Darkness.
-
Not how I took the lore, but you raise good points, and I'll make adjustments to my view on it.
-
Light is not necessarily "souls" - that is extreme conjecture even for this sort of probing, which is otherwise pretty solid.

Edited by ur nans mate350: 10/12/2014 1:12:38 PMOn the live action gameplay trailer that bungee released, you get a short clip of what looks to be like the moon, with a dragon-like figure "flying" before it. Is this the "IT"? This could be the FACE of the darkness. I am excited to see how bungie will develop this into something... Magical. EDIT: I forgot to mention that the text "... As the black flames burnt the blossoms" made me think of that dragon seen on the moon.
-
Rasputin isn't talking about other war minds. He saw the darkness in the garden and realized it is stronger than even the "gardener" and asked himself why. The Darkness was alone and Powerful. Rasputin saw this and did the same by design. He Killed of his makers ( i don't think he was made by other warminds) to also be alone and Powerful ("They made me to be stronger than them"). Being alone is what Rasputin saw as the reason the darkness is so powerful ("IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won") Rasputin learned from the darkness and survived because of it. His Choice.

Is he a reference to the actually Rasputin, the Russian monk with the large penis

Edited by Skryblz: 10/11/2014 6:31:08 PMI went through yesterday and acquired *most* of the grimoire cards/ghosts around the world and started to read them today. Some interesting dialogue about the Vex and Rasputin/Warminds. Seems that the Warmind is the only thing the Vex cannot "simulate" or understand unlike humankind. I've bolded some of the more interesting tidbits. It makes it seem like this whole game, is just a simulation of the Vex. Kind of explains how we can just "materialize" from our ghost like we never died, and how the gorgons/templar just "erase" us from existence.... because we are just copies of guardians running in a Vex simulation. This is under grimoire cards --> enemies --> vex --> ghost fragment: vex 1-3 From the Records of the Ishtar Collective ESI: Maya, I need your help. I don't know how to fix this. SUNDARESH: What is it? Chioma. Sit. Tell me. ESI: I've figured out what's happening inside the specimen. SUNDARESH: Twelve? The operational Vex platform? That's incredible! You must know what this means - ah, so. It's not good, or you'd be on my side of the desk. And it's not urgent, or you'd already have evacuated the site. Which means... ESI: I have a working interface with the specimen's internal environment. I can see what it's thinking. SUNDARESH: In metaphorical terms, of course. The cognitive architectures are so - ESI: No. I don't need any kind of epistemology bridge. SUNDARESH: Are you telling me it's human? A human merkwelt? Human qualia? ESI: I'm telling you it's full of humans. It's thinking about us. SUNDARESH: About - oh no. ESI: It's simulating us. Vividly. Elaborately. It's running a spectacularly high-fidelity model of a Collective research team studying a captive Vex entity. SUNDARESH:...how deep does it go? ESI: Right now the simulated Maya Sundaresh is meeting with the simulated Chioma Esi to discuss an unexpected problem. [indistinct sounds] SUNDARESH: There's no divergence? That's impossible. It doesn't have enough information. ESI: It inferred. It works from what it sees and it infers the rest. I know that feels unlikely. But it obviously has capabilities we don't. It may have breached our shared virtual workspace...the neural links could have given it data... SUNDARESH: The simulations have interiority? Subjectivity? ESI: I can't know that until I look more closely. But they act like us. SUNDARESH: We're inside it. By any reasonable philosophical standard, we are inside that Vex. ESI: Unless you take a particularly ruthless approach to the problem of causal forks: yes. They are us. SUNDARESH: Call a team meeting. ESI: The other you has too. CARD 2 SUNDARESH: So that's the situation as we know it. ESI: To the best of my understanding. SHIM: Well I'll be a [profane] [profanity]. This is extremely [profane]. That thing has us over a barrel. SUNDARESH: Yeah. We're in a difficult position. DUANE-MCNIADH: I don't understand. So it's simulating us? It made virtual copies of us? How does that give it power? ESI: It controls the simulation. It can hurt our simulated selves. We wouldn't feel that pain, but rationally speaking, we have to treat an identical copy's agony as identical to our own. SUNDARESH: It's god in there. It can simulate our torment. Forever. If we don't let it go, it'll put us through hell. DUANE-MCNIADH: We have no causal connection to the mind state of those sims. They aren't us. Just copies. We have no obligation to them. ESI: You can't seriously - your OWN SELF - SHIM: [profane] idiot. Think. Think. If it can run one simulation, maybe it can run more than one. And there will only ever be one reality. Play the odds. DUANE-MCNIADH: Oh...uh oh. SHIM: Odds are that we aren't our own originals. Odds are that we exist in one of the Vex simulations right now. ESI: I didn't think of that. SUNDARESH: [indistinct percussive sound] CARD 3 SUNDARESH: I have a plan. ESI: If you have a plan, then so does your sim, and the Vex knows about it. DUANE-MCNIADH: Does it matter? If we're in Vex hell right now, there's nothing we can - SHIM: Stop talking about 'real' and 'unreal.' All realities are programs executing laws. Subjectivity is all that matters. SUNDARESH: We have to act as if we're in the real universe, not one simulated by the specimen. Otherwise we might as well give up. ESI: Your sim self is saying the same thing. SUNDARESH: Chioma, love, please hush. It doesn't help. DUANE-MCNIADH: Maybe the simulations are just billboards! Maybe they don't have interiority! It's bluffing! SHIM: I wish someone would simulate you shutting up. SUNDARESH: If we're sims, we exist in the pocket of the universe that the Vex specimen is able to simulate with its onboard brainpower. If we're real, we need to get outside that bubble. ESI: ...we call for help. SUNDARESH: That's right. We bring in someone smarter than the specimen. Someone too big to simulate and predict. A warmind. SHIM: In the real world, the warmind will be able to behave in ways the Vex can't simulate. It's too smart. The warmind may be able to get into the Vex and rescue - us. DUANE-MCNIADH: If we try, won't the Vex torture us for eternity? Or just erase us? SUNDARESH: It may simply erase us. But I feel that's preferable to...the alternatives. ESI: I agree. SHIM: Once we try to make the call, the Vex may...react. So let's all savor this last moment of stability. SUNDARESH: [indistinct sounds] SHIM: You two are adorable. DUANE-MCNIADH: I wish I'd taken that job at Clovis.

Appreciate the effort in put into this. I at least get a better picture of Rasputin / Golden Age / Collapse and all of that. I've been confused (probably not alone) with most of the story and how it links together. Thanks a bunch :)

Stumbled upon this after searching for something else... ...so you're saying that the "light" we wield is the life-forces of dead people? eww, so I'm putting dead people into my armor?
-
Great Read. To push one point about Rasputin and his attempt to overcome the dark by gathering light/souls, you could surmise that it was in fact Rasputin that triggered the collapse in order to wound/temporarily route the Darkness.
