Quick Guide on how to acquire better Loot

The details on the exact workings of the Loot system are unrevealed. Bungie wants us to figure it out on our own because it is part of the experience. So here is a quick tip on how to acquire better loot and a simple explanation for why the terrible player got all the loot. This is not information I have researched but rather the understanding I have come too, knowing what an Individual Loot System is and testing this theory has been pretty successful. I have shared this info with many friends and they too have had a lot more success. A group of us spent all weekend testing this and it seems to work. (Most of the time) If anyone has time to run some tests and post some numbers please do so and share it with us. The Loot system has been personalized (Bungie’s words not mine). What does that mean exactly? First off let’s stop and wrap our heads around the concept that Bungie wants us to explore the ENTIRE game (Also there words), which means if you don't play it or use it than that's where the loot is. If you thumb through your guardian info on Bungie.net (You can’t see enough info on the Companion App so you'll need to look at the website), you will see the various types of missions: Story, Strike, Raid, Patrol and Crucible. Look at your bar graphs to find out what you do the least of. For me I don't like PvP so I don't spend much time in the Crucible. Think of each bar graph as odds trackers. My crucible is lowest so I am most likely going to find more loot there, which is also why the guy with 3 kills and 20 deaths gets the legendary. He sucks because he doesn't play much PvP so he doesn't get kills but the kills he does get counts as far as loot goes because that's where the odds are for him. Once again it’s personal and it has nothing to do with his performance against other better PvP players, rather it has to do with what he plays more of. Usually when I do jump into the crucible my first game with a kill yields a green sometimes blue item which just further reinforces this concept. But that's just the first layer. Now look at your kills trackers. I use my scout rifle all the time. I don’t really care for any of the other primaries so I never use them. However, I don’t get many loot drops when I get scout rifle kills and when I do the Loot is never a scout rifle. I would get them for a while but as I get more hours in the game they showed up less and less and now I’m about 16 hours without a scout rifle drop. So using weapons you don’t normally use also yields better results. So what you should be doing is checking your trackers and using you lowest used weapons to get more loot. For me I have zero hand cannon kills because I have never even equipped it so that’s what I need to be using. To further expand on this, engram drops will be weapons you don’t use in an attempt to get you to use them more often. I never used heavy weapons until it dropped a legendary rocket launcher and before I started using those, most of my Loot was a machine gun or rocket launcher. Now I don’t use many snipers so what do I get more of? Sniper Rifles. This covers the basics of it; however, there are a lot more things to consider. We don’t know what parameters Bungie tracks other than the info on your guardian on Bungie.net. They could track more things like close range kills vs long range and so on and so forth. So if you’re having trouble finding loot: -Hop on bungie.net and look at your lowest played game mode -Look at your lowest used weapons and equip them. -Go play that game mode and watch the engrams rain. -Try to change it up frequently to keep it balanced as possible for the most success. -Share this info with your friends so we all can take full advantage of the Loot System Edit 1 For those who have questions or say this is total BS, I never said it was perfect. It does work pretty well. However, our test run on it was over about 50 hours of gameplay and there were 8 of us involved in it. (I know this is not a lot but the game is also new. I hope more people get involved and help build a bigger data collection.) All 8 of us have different play styles and experiences. Some of us are all about PvP while the others are all about PvE. Generally, it helped. It’s like climate vs. weather, people want to watch the weather and say that the climate is all over the place. It’s a matter of patience. We had days of testing before we started making any conclusions. We already know it’s not completely random. As your level goes up so does gear quality. I know that's a simple adjustment but it got us doing some reading. The idea was they supposedly use a personal loot system so we did plenty of research on these types of loots systems which even included some good reads and Q&A from a couple individuals who have designed loot systems in the past, one of which did stated he worked with blizzard on wow on a couple different occasions. I can’t give names or references because those individuals aren't involved in this project. (Sorry if you’re the kind of person who needs proof before giving it a shot. I wish I could help you there). We right off noticed that we tend to get weapons we don’t use which are congruent with a personal loot system. I haven't seen a scout rifle drop since the first week of the game and my scout rifle accounts for over 99% of my kills as far as primary goes. I don’t get anything on patrol probably because I spent about a week at the cave. We applied many of the basic concepts of a personal loot system to the game and found that it makes a lot of sense. The stats that are tracked on your guardian aren’t really helpful for the players, so why is Bungie tracking these stats? Logically, you would have to say they have some sort of importance. But even if it is important to Bungie, why would they go through the effort to make these stats available to the player? Yes, it could be just cool information. We then put it to the test and GENERALLY we got better loot from modes we don't normally play. Of course there are plenty of ups and downs because it still has very random aspects to it. As far as the weapons go we ALL have found that we always get the weapons we don't use and it got worse the more we used the weapons we liked. It seems as though your modes you play affect the engram drop rates and the weapons you use affects what the Cryptarch gives you (I would love to see more testing on this). It could all in fact be coincidental, however, at this time it doesn't appear so because with that many hours trends should start to disappear, and the only way to tell for sure is to get more people involved to compile an larger amount of data. So this guide is the start. I'm hoping this post gets more people actively engaged in testing and discovering the full workings of the system. So far I haven't had anyone who has actually tried this system come back with negative feedback.

    • I didn't use a single hand cannon for the majority of my gameplay on destiny and the only one I have ever received in a drop was fatebringer last night from the raid.

      • I want to let you know that I completely respect your testing and I believe what you've stated. The way you've tested does make a lot of sense. But, I'm sorry I will have to differ from your belief. I don't think it has to do with any of that. I wish it was true but the RNG is real. I've been a very "Blessed" guardian so far. I've gotten everything I needed, from weapons to armors and always using the same setup. I love hand cannons and I also get drops. Honestly, I get drops from all classes of weapons. I understand your concept and the way you put it out does make sense. But it hasn't effect me at all. Like I said I might be just blessed. I got all the cool weapons I wanted except one only, Gjallarhorn...which I will get it, you'll see. It won't be because of your concept though. I really like your study and I favor it. I just differ from it. I don't think it works like that. RNG is a pain and I know everyone is looking a way to get through it and get better loot. Understandable... Good luck to you and hope many others follow your idea and concept. Wish you luck.

      • The only experience I have to offer is my own. But I do feel that each character has their own personalized loot table. My hunter has terrible luck with raid gear. The only difference between this character and my other two is that she never had to grind for any gear. It was all waiting in the vault for her when she hit lvl 20. (Side bar, Calling character a she weird?) Anyway. I am going to test out buying a legendary chest even though I don't need to. And see if that item drops finally in the raid. While this experiment lacks structure. I have played enough to see a noticeable difference in this character's drop rates. Specifically for raid gear. There is definitely something to your theory.

Question: How does this apply to armor drops? Especially raid armor drops? Why do we have so many reports of guardians receiving multiple copies of one or two pieces, but never having the items they are missing drop? Anecdotal example: Here's my story from this past week. Played Iron Banner to get gloves as I only had raid boots (my first raid armor drop) and two raid chests (my only other two subsequent drops). Friday I hit rank four and buy gloves. Saturday I level them to 30, equip my raid boots and chest and an exotic helm, and head off to hard raid at 30 for first time ( not my first hard raid, but first time while being level 30). During that raid, I have the gloves drop during oracles, and the helm drop from atheon. Tiebreaker too which I had never gotten before. How's that work? What do you think? Also, I had a prior hard raid run, where I had my second AE drop, while I was using my first. I do believe it is personalized loot system and not total engineering, but I don't think it's optimal ago the moment.

So far I haven't had anyone who has actually tried this system come back with negative feedback.[/quote] This is Facesplitter here with my 2cents: Try looking at your the Gilmore cards on your weapons and compare your kills. Once all of weapon cards are reached and kills are all back in range of each other. then compare this HEAR SAY crap that's going around. Not only that have a Hunter, Titan and Warlock leveled up and try not to just favor the one out of the bunch. DO all bounties with each but hold off on turning them in, until all three characters are ready. Do the night falls with all of them and start grabbing those weapon telemetry from exotic dude. Max out weapons and I mean all weapons!!! Unused Exotics over everything!! If your wondering why you haven't seen a legendary engram drop in so long this is a major tip for you guys. Oh by the way when you turn one of those engram in and you get shards or energy instead.... This is why.....(Really dude) think about it when YOU were your fresh to the game you probably saw them left and right... but now not so much right... Well look at your Vault and what your holding right now.... Now what crap are you holding that your not using and also isn't leveled up now.... Most of you are looking at a full plate right.. Now what about a Noob? Nothing!!! All brand new to him anyways so it doesn't even matter. But now here's the catch... If your leveling up your guns and armor strictly by bounties you'll almost never see another legendary or exotic for days even weeks, you gotta use it for a few kills/deaths and go to something else. Never use the same gun or guns(armor too now) for more then 3 crucible matches. Oh and try to not!!! Use your guns on ever character, try to resist that urge guys. Now test these theories out and see how much wasted time has been spent waiting for your next legendary or exotic

        • I have seen this theory before... Not calling bs but just pointing out, I'm terrible in the crucible. Like 1 kill and 14 deaths terrible and I have never gotten any loot from crucible matches, the only time I go there is when I have exotic weapon bounties. With regards to weapon choice, when I first saw this theory I switched from a scout rifle to an auto rifle. To this day I have received 3 legendary engrams and one exotic chest piece from a night fall along with one exotic weapon from the raid. Again I'm not calling bs just pointing out this theory didn't work for me

            • Interesting, and just happens to coincide, mostly, with the drops/rewards I have gotten. I was using a scout rifle almost 100% as my primary while on the way to lvl 20. Bad Seed Down pulse rifle was the first legendary I got (forget how I got it, but it was not purchased). Since getting that, it was all I used as a primary, while basically I only used fusion rifles and machine guns as special and heavy, until I purchased Patience & Time from Xur, which I then started using on bosses. While running with that load out, the legendary drops/cryptarc rewards I have gotten are two scout rifles, two auto rifles, a shotgun, a hand cannon and a rocket launcher. The one outlier would be getting a second P&T as a Tiger Strike reward. The one interesting coincidence that I encountered; two purple engram drops, of the few I have gotten, happened in the exact same place; the first group of mobs (dregs, vandals and shanks) that you encounter if you take a right from the patrol spawn location on Venus into the Shattered Coast.

            • In terms of crucible, does this apply for the different game modes in crucible. For example, I don't play a lot of salvage, skirmish, and rumble, does that mean I have a higher chance of dropping better loot from playing that game mode?

This is random... But I'd like to see engrams pop out of player kills from time to time, that would be cool.

Think think the OP is on to something here. I study a lot in Quantum Theory which as we know involves probability. If the loot system was 100% random and no other factors effected this randomness then you should have with a small number of players that own this game get Extreme polar loot drop luck opposites. One player puts 40 hours into the game but does not get single rare. Another player hits rank 18 and then his next 50 drops are all Legendary. I have not seen these extremes as yet but if this system is totally random then more of these less probable scenarios will happen. I have put over 40 hours into the game and am level 24 and I have never had a legendary drop but that could be effected by the patches being slowly brought out. You can test this out. Do an event you do a lot with a weapon that you use the most for 30 mins and see what you get and then do something you hardly ever do with a weapon you hardly ever use for 30 mins as see if you notice a difference. I did and in a big way.

                          • Im interested to see/test this pattern. It does make sense, as my friend can't get an Auto Rifle to drop, and hasn't seen one since level 12. However. My post here isn't battling/debating this topic. It's more so towards the people making comments. It's a question.. Why is it, that you think you should have the best loot in the game (or exotics, or legendary engrams), when the game hasn't even been out a full month yet? Why are multiple people mad at this? Sure there are people out there who are 29/30, people who have an exotic armor piece, and exotic weapon piece. But just imagine if it were easy to get these things. EVERYONE would have them. And not to mention, if everyone has an exotic, that kind of devalues it. There will always be people who have more time on their hands. More time to farm loot caves #1, #2, and #3. More organized people who will be better at farming Raids, and Very Hard Strikes. There will always been someone who has better gear than you, and is better than you in general. So yes, some people will have Exotics... and some wont. But the real underlying fact is. If it were easier to get exotics/legendaries. The game would be less fun than it already is. People are so quick to rush to the end game of the game, and then they complain when they've run out of content. Sure the story should be longer, and maybe there should be more matchmaking. But there will always be people rushing to get the best loot/gear. The new WoW expansion is coming out soon. And I have friends who are already planning their goal to get to the new raids. I also had a friend who went from level 80 to 85 the first day they raised the level cap to 90. Everyone is in such a rush to get to say they've explored all the content, gotten all the loot. But when they arrive there, they've just rushed through their $60, and now are bored without new content. So they bash the game, because while others are calmly enjoying the progression through the game, those who rushed are bored. Bungie will never be able to release content fast enough to please people, unless they take a methodical approach and put more focus onto releasing content each month.

                                • My curiousity is aroused. I will test this theory tonight. I have not played any crucible matches yet. I need a pair of Nemesis Plane leg armor to match the rest of my armor. So off to the crucible after work. I have been mostly playing story and patrol missions and have gotten multiple green drops on some outings. With 2 characters, I have found rare primary weapons that each of those characters favor. However, one character uses the same favored primary weapon in patrol and story while the 2nd one has different favored weapons. At level 20, the one that had different favored weapons leveled up faster than the one that just jued hand cannons. With randomness involved you can only guess and hope for the best. I have seen drops after executing what I call a finesse kill. Headshots for example after jumping. I have seen more than once something drop when I targeted an enemy and let the person playing with me make the kill. That has happened several times.
