The Embrace of Winter: Part 3

Last one- The journey through the checkpoints was easy and safe. The EXO saw a lot of amazing looking machinery, but had no idea what any of it was. After only a few minutes, they finally ended at a table covered in old blueprints that had long faded away. Near it was what looked like a large, simple robotic arm that was long past its prime. "Alright," said his Ghost as he popped out to look around. "This will do quite well. I just need you to take your helmet off for this." The EXO did as he was told and pulled off his helmet. His dark gray head and antenna contrasted the faded yellow of his mouth, and his light blue eyes looked over towards his Ghost as he stood still as he waited. His Ghost scanned him and then headed over to the crane like machine. "I just need to power this back up," explained the floating robot. "Shouldn't take more than a minute." He was right. Soon the machine powered up and a dark purple laser shot out the end of it towards the EXO's throat. The machine moved around with surgical precision as it shot several small blasts in different spots near his face. "That should do it," said his Ghost as he powered down the machine and floated over to inspect the EXO. "Go ahead and try it out." His mouth had changed color to dark purple. "Thanks Vector," he said gratefully as he ran his fingers along the sides of his newly repaired mouth. "I am sure the static was killing you. You did always hate it when one of my systems was not working right." His Ghost narrowed his eye and groaned, "I told you my name is not Vector, it is Ghost." "Right, sorry," apologized the EXO. "I do not know why that name keeps coming up." "Well whatever the reason I would really prefer to be called by my actual name," said his Ghost. "Wait, but there are a lot of Ghosts, right?" Asked the EXO as a though popped into his head. "Yes, millions," replied his Ghost. "And you are all called Ghost?" He continued. "Yes," replied his Ghost as he started to get tired of how ridiculous these questions were getting. "There are millions of beings just like you who also have exactly the same name as you? Then how can there really be any individuality between each of you?" Contemplated the EXO. "Yes," retorted his Ghost while skillfully ignoring the last part of the question. "Hey, let's get to finding a ship and getting it ready to fly. You know something actually productive?" The EXO thought he had made his point clear, but agreed. "Alright, where do we get started on finding a ship?" "There is a terminal not far from here," explained his Ghost. "If we can get to it I can check through their projects to see if any of them had a working ship, or something close to it." He disappeared into the EXO, and as the new waypoint popped up the EXO headed for it. Just like before, he was led through the maze of machinery and long forgotten projects until they arrived at their destination. "Alright," said his Ghost as he materialized and started to interface with the panel using his light. "Well that's convenient. There is an experimental jump ship nearby." "Then we should get going," replied the EXO who was anxious to talk to someone so he could get some answers. It was in fact not nearby, but almost a mile away. After the uneventful journey they were both quite disappointed. "Well I think it used to be a jump ship?" His Ghost said optimistically. To be honest, he was not really all that sure. The frame was in the shape of a barrel, it had no wings, and it only had four engines in the back. If it was a jump ship it would of had to have been more of a ship used to transport large amounts of cargo slowly through space. "Maybe we should try looking for another one," suggested the EXO. "We need to get to the city where the Traveler is," replied his Ghost with a sense of urgency. "Looks aren't everything." "It is not so much the look," explained the EXO after a slight chuckle. "It is more the fact that I'm sure any other ship out there could out gun and out fly this thing." He paused to think, and shook his head as he looked back at his Ghost and said, "I do not know if it will even be able to break the atmosphere." His Ghost looked at the ship and then back at him. "It doesn't have to." He said with a sense of pride. "The city is right here on earth." "OK then," cautioned the EXO as he pointed towards his Ghost, " what about if an enemy ship engages us?" "No need to worry about that," replied his Ghost confidently. "There haven't been aerial battles in a long time. Not even their larger jump ships come close to the surface anymore." "And you are sure this is our only choice?" Asked the EXO as he hoped another search would lead them to a better ship. "I'm afraid so," sighed his Ghost. "Then we should just get to work," sighed the EXO dejectedly. "Tell me what I need to do." His Ghost hovered over and scanned the ship. Then he dematerialized inside it. The ship glowed blue as it was being scanned. "Most of the systems are salvageable, but others we will have to replace." "Great," said the EXO sarcastically. "I love having such easy jobs." "It won't be so bad," consoled his Ghost. "A few hours of work tops."
