The Necessity of a Competitive Ranking System

To begin with, I have logged around 60 hours of Destiny playtime. In essence I think that it is a wonderful game, particularly because of it's unique style of gameplay. I won't get into my complete opinion of what makes Destiny wonderful and what makes it terrible at the same time (story-writing, campaign gameplay, mission repetitiveness, general sense of ambiguity). This post here will voice my opinion purely on the Crucible and what needs to be changed by Bungie (hopefully) to keep some competitive players in the mix for years to come. My main problem with the Crucible is that, in actuality, there is little purpose of playing it. Bounties get boring and repetitive. The random reward system is wonky and frustrating at times. There is only a short amount of time (like I have said, it's taken me 60 hours of gametime to find the desire to write this) where the Crucible is rewarding, new, and interesting. After reaching level 28 as a Warlock and 20 as a Titan, I can honestly say without any hesitation that the only reason I still play the Crucible is that it is fun destroying other teams. The gameplay is fantastic (wish it was 60 FPS, but hey), which is tremendous. This brings us to my main point: where is a freaking ranking system? What's the point in logging the hours in PvP when you have nothing to show for it? Armor is cool and everything but I would definitely prefer to have some tangible bragging rights associated with my Guardian, as opposed to what is currently offered. Bungie coined the best ranking system ever with Halo 2. The symbols were ingenious. The bragging rights were there. In the many years of my playing through Halo 2's multiplayer, I was always proud when I reached new heights and constantly downtrodden when I fell lower. And that's another thing, to h*** with games now that base ranks purely off of playing time and prestiges (looking at you CoD, Battlefield, &c). Halo 2 was so successful as a multiplayer machine because that's what it was: you v the world, you v all your friends, you v yourself. What Destiny needs is a competitive ranking system, preferably emulating Halo 2, for each playlist. If Bungie were to put this into place I truly do not think I would be able to put Destiny down or keep the gameplay out of my dreams. If you're reading this, Bungie, please consider what I have presented here. Cheers!
