Why Destiny Should Bring the Loot Cave Back

The latest patch has essentially eliminated the usefullness of the famed "Loot Cave". For those who lived under a rock for the past week, the loot cave was a location in Old Russia where waves of Hive enemies would continuosly respawn as long as each wave was killed and people were far enough way to trigger them. Then after some time people would run into the cave an collect the various engrams and gear that would drop. The reason why this cave grew to the phenominon it did is due to the underlying problems with Destiny that Bungie does not want to acknowledge. The ratio of time and energy spent grinding in strikes and in highly repetitive missions is nowhere near good enough to the amount of loot received for those activities. Rare engrams, which already have a very low chance to appear throughout a mission, just lead to a lottery system which further infuriates people. The bullet sponge bosses that take upwards of 30 minutes to an hour at times depending on difficulty do not reward players with anything and the resulting rewards from those missions more often then not do not help the player. The end result is thousands upon thousands of players are horribly dissatisfied with the amount of loot they get playing the way Bungie wants the game to be played for the time they spend trying to get it so when these type of farming opportunities arise allowing players to have a better chance at attaining things they want with a far better time spent to loot acquired ratio you understand why the loot cave became as big as it did. It wasn't just the fact that people could finally actually get stuff they wanted faster, which is required for leveling past 20, there were other reasons why the loot cave should come back. During my time shooting at that cave for hours on end, I was there with usually at least 3 other people all of the time. In a game that is surprisingly anti-social for what is supposed to be a "shared world experience" not allowing people to talk to each other unless they are on a 3 max limit fireteam and only giving us 3 animations of which to interact with other people, being around other people all doing 1 activity was fun. Not only that but since public events land right in that area I have done numerous public events with other people just like the original E3 promotional material showcased. Outside of this loot cave I've been in 4 public events by myself, because nobody else was around. Not only were the public events more fun but occasionally the Fallen and Hive would battle eachover in much harder waves at that location really ramping up the difficulty and making the world feel more dynamic and alive for that small instance. People won't notice this as much now that the loot cave is no more. Bungie, even if not a single staff member looks at this thread or this post, I'll say this anyway. Bring back the loot cave. Or at least up the % that loot drops significantly elsewhere in the game. Bounties, light leveling, these events like Queen's Wrath, vendor reputation (seriously, why start us at level 0 if most vendors can't sell you anything until level 3 or 2), all they do is reinforce repetition within very little content that we as gamers have to work with. The story does a poor job entertaining us while we have to grind out kills so at the very least you can make our hours upon hours upon hours of time spent more fun. Even if you don't change the likelihood of rare, legendary, or exotic stuff appearing if you raise the overall % of loot dropping by like 500% people will at least be happy that they're getting something, anything for their effort. If others agree with this sentiment or just want to talk about their stories around the loot cave, please feel free to do so. I want Bungie to know that we want this game to be better and that we want to have fun with the game, but so far they're holding us back.

  • I'm glad it's finally patched. It was fun while it lasted, but it was a game breaker. People were getting legendaries way too easily, and it ruined the excitement of finding loot. Now when I pick something up I get excited and check it out. And about the bosses, I do it because it's fun and don't mind getting crappy rewards. Like I said, I love getting any kind of goodies.

Fixed "loot cave" in 4 days, has update and information on fixes coming, can't play since day one, still waiting on information about fixes.

  • I agree loot cave was fun seeing 5-6 people in one area working together (excluding the asshats that go in every engram drop) towards a shared goal for better gear or for gear even to break into shards. It has so many mmo based mechanics in it I wouldn't be surprised if they asked damn blizzard for ideas now that Activision has it's unrelenting icy death grip on both companies. I will lose interest fast if this game becomes super casual I like the grind in all shapes wether it be the Russian glory hole or strikes. They just need to make improvements across the board not just remove a completely viable grind area with no increase else where. But they also shouldn't give the items away as a fix either. All in all. 7 year WoW player and stopped because it became polluted with pre-teen gimmie now mechanics

    • All I see is someone who feels like they are entitled to the best gear. The strikes give you Vanguard currency that you can use to buy Legendary armor and doing strikes gives you rare engrams that can turn into Strange Coins that can be used to buy Exotic gear, as well as the end loot of the strike can give you Strange Coins. People who want the cave back are lazy and don't know how to play an mmo. Bitch on, brats.

I'm utterly shocked at the number of players who are coming on the forums to cry and spout non sense without even having read the Devs Notes... How can you say Bungie don't want to acknoledge issues when it is said black on white that they are going to improve the cryptarch/drops on other activities and reduce Strike Boss HP to make it less longer.? Dammit...

      • It is irritating that Bungie's answer to the problem was NERF EVERYTHING! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Of course it was an easy fix, lower the spawn times on the cave mob. But it seems like a knee-jerk reaction to what I think was a minor issue. And you're right the reason it got so popular is because the random loot system is a joke!

      • They don't need to bring back the loot cave. That's the wrong solution. The correct solution is fixing the loot system. For now, they should bring the cave back for now, but ultimately, they do need to go back and fix the loot tables. Only then, should they remove the cave

Eh I dunno about the loot cave. I didn't receive my first leg drop until level 25. I was fine with it and never felt compelled to go to the cave and stand in one spot. I kept doing strikes and patrols normally and one dropped. I was super excited and it felt awesome. I'm am now 28 and I have 2 exotic primaries and 1 leg prime. 4 leg secondary and 1 leg rocket launcher. I have 1 leg shoes from vault of glass and all other armour I bought. I also have one more exotic I am working on. My point is just play the game and rewards will come. It's called RNG for a reason

        • They don't need to bring back the loot cave, they need to freaking fix the drop system. It's the only reason people loot in the first place. Bungie really needs to make it more rewarding to defeat hard bosses/ultras. I really want to like this game, stop preventing that, I'm talking to you development team.

        • There are plenty of other ways to farm. I didn't have a problem with the loot cave, used it myself, but it was pretty clearly not designed to be used that way and was ~destined~ to be changed. It's not coming back. And that's just fine.

I wanted to go to the loot cave specifically for this very reason. I'd heard how fun it is from others, but never got to experience it myself. Now I never will since, at most, I have 1 random near me at any given time. Usually I'm doing the public events by myself.

            • From what I've experienced this week, loot cave has returned... I was just patrolling the area, not really engaging the enemy... I notice three other people just shooting at the same target for like ten minutes. It popped into my head that I just found the fabled "loot cave" and was witnessing fishing in progress. I didn't even fire one bullet, but seconds later I was in possession of a legendary engram. So it's still alive and kicking... What I disagree with is all these "fans" calling foul with the gameplay features... Anyone who's anyone knows that Destiny is a console version of an MMO. Bungie can dodge, sidestep, or tip toe around the topic all they want, but at the end of the day Destiny is an MMO, period. Now if you're familiar with the way this genre works, you'll question the nature of the "grind" a lot less... But these are mostly console kids complaining about the time needed to progress, and all the requirements. Honestly, I hate grinding but I get it. Only players who are truly serious about this game will be rewarded... Those who lose interest after the tv is off, will not benefit at all.
