There are loads of icons and stuff that I have no idea what they mean. For example the icons on the missions like the Queen's Wrath. I have no idea if they mean the things are boosted or nerfed for the elementals.
I had to figure out what the Patrol mission icons were (which weren't hard) but we shouldn't really have to. Used to be we were given manuals to explain this shizz. Then to save money (for the devs and publishers) they shifted over to the digital manuals which you couldn't read ingame... you had to come out to the main menu to read the sodding thing. Now it seems we don't even get a digital manual.... AND THE GAMES GET MORE EXPENSIVE.

I agree with you. When I bought the physical disc version of Destiny I was surprised that there was no manual inside the box. Even nowadays most games have at least a basic 1 to 2 page manual showing the control layout. Apparently Destiny's manual can be found on Activision's website but it's not there. Quite a lot of learning Destiny's many elements depends solely on a player's gaming intuition and past experience with similar games. Considering how much money they spent making it and how much money we spent on buying it it would have been nice to include a paper or digital manual (something) detailing how all of the main gameplay aspects work. I used to enjoy reading the manual to a brand new game because it drew you in to the aspects that make that game unique and it let you understand the type of gameplay better. So much about Destiny is guesswork and forcing you to find things out from outside of the actual game like this website and the app (grimoire anyone?) that it just seems like Bungie put up a lot of unnecessary barriers either by accident or by design.

When you select the mission you can move the cursor over top of each of the heroic modifier symbols and they will tell you what each one does.

Yes, and it was a picture of a cave in Old Russia.

I think the idea is that learning all this stuff is "part of the game" ;-) True a very boring and tedious game learning what icons mean/do etc. It would be so much easier if this website had some meaningful help. As it stands you have to read a load of blogs/forums and try and sort the wheat from the chaff - it's tedious and reduces the entertainment of what is actually an excellent game. But I think this is one of the reasones why it's <80% on gamerankings.com
