If you watch the shield color on the tougher enemies (captains, wizards, etc.) it will be one of three colors: blue, orange, or purple. Use Arc for blue, Solar (I think) for orange, and Void for purple. The floating numbers are generally white if the shield is resistant to it, but match the it if the damage is effective.
