First off, let me just say I am enjoying this game. I play it as often as possible and can't wait until my wife lets me do it some more. Lol. But, with that being said, as much as I'm enjoying blasting baddies, I'm really feeling uncomfortable about not fully knowing why.
In an age of pvp shooters and online only multiplayer, companies are making the mistake of sacrificing story, but without story, we have no purpose, and without purpose... There is no destiny.
I want to know who my character was before the Ghost revived them. I want to know when he/she fell. Do they even know about the Traveler? How did they learn to fight? What makes them worthy of being a Guardian? And why aren't they asking anything and just happily killing things as complacently as possible?
There are a lot of questions needing answered, and yes, I look into the Grimoire whenever I unlock cards. As a Halo fan from the beginning, I'm really hoping Bungie will save the day with deeper characters and plot lines in near future content, and personally, for promising us more than has been delivered, I think that content should be free.
We, as their consumers, need to let our concerns be noted and not settle for paying for the story we were promised.

Congratulations. You have achieved the next level of Story Enlightenment. Allow me to guide you. The inherent problem of story driven multi-player is just that. They CAN'T tell you who you are or what you died from. Because then everyone has the same backstory. You can't customize when someone is telling you this is who the character is and how they behave. You want to know more about your character? YOU make it up. You ask the questions. Now YOU must answer them. YOU must write out and fulfill your DESTINY. My Titan's name is Kalienthia. She was a soldier during the Collapse and fought against the first waves of the Darkness and it's Horde of aliens. She was defending fleeing refugees as they sought to flee Earth from the Cosmodrome. It was there she was slain. Her Ghost in question found records of her unit and decided she specifically would be a good Guardian because she was "interesting" based off the reports it found in old ruined databanks and spend the rest of it's existence looking for her specifically. It found her in the ruins of the Cosmodrome where she was slain. Her experiences at being brought back to life were a bit surreal. Her nature as a Titan and a Striker manifested in a constant subconscious itching of the fists and a strong desire to just punch something. The satisfaction of landing her first skull crushing blow and feeling the shock of the punch ride up her arm was something she thoroughly enjoyed. She remembers her name and remembers the Hell of the collapse. She doesn't need to hear the tales and legends of the Fall of the Golden Age. She lived that war and finds their inaccuracies amusing. She also developed a disturbing (at least to her Ghost) tendency to dance on the graves and bodies of her slain enemies. (Done when a mission is concluded as I make a beeline for the spot I killed the Major or Ultra and start dancing.) She takes pride in being a Titan and hearing about their indomitable nature. (Taken from reading the various tooltips of the Marks of Six Fronts. As well as the descriptions found in Titan Armor.) She also has a love of the color blue. Your turn.

"I want to know who my character was before the Ghost revived them." The character is YOU. That's why YOU created a guardian. If you don't know yourself.. start soul searching...
-
You're right... It is unfinished. You know why? Because it's a freaking MMO. You think WOW is finished? Do you? I hope not. You'd be wrong. Chill out.
-
Aye, it's a bit too vague right now... I've been comparing it to the Witcher in terms of storytelling, but even the Witcher had some quality character development and informative dialogue...
-
It's all to make the character truly your own.
-
Bungie have a 10 year plan for this franchise, dont expect all the answers straight away.
-
Seriously one of the worsts story ever told. The guy who made this story up prob made millions too.
-
Don't you guys think Destiny will be like a comic book series? Like each CH will be released in expansions. So they story is going to be short, that way they can charge for adding onto it
-
The story, as I see it, is pretty basic so far, but here's how I see it:
The Traveler has Light, ans uses it to fight the Darkness. But right now, it's catatonic, so as Guardians we have to protect it until it wakes back up to save us again. Meanwhile, a bunch of enemy races have come out of the Darkness to -blam!- and pillage our worlds, our cities, and our race. These enemies are nothing compared to the Darkness, but they're like the boarding parties in that one level of Halo 2: if they can get close to us and kill the Traveler, the Darkness can come in and destroy everything. With that in mind, there is the Exo lady, who is fighting in unknown battles with an unknown faction. She finds the player, a Guardian who has shown promise, and tells them to look into the Black Garden, a place only the Reef seems to know about (which makes sense, since the Reef is a neutral faction in this war, and thus does business with the Darkness). The player goes to the Reef to ask for information, but the Queen and her brother do not trust him/her, so they send them to Venus to kill a Gate Lord. This turns out to be useful to the player, though, as the eye of a Gate Lord is enough to get them into the Black Garden. Thus, the player is sent to Mars, where it seems like the Cabal are already looking into stopping the Vex. Eventually, the Player gets to the Black Garden and finds that there is indeed a dark power there trying to kill the Traveller. The player destroys this power, and proves themselves a capable Guardian. The Exo lady now trusts the player, and may call upon him/her in the future, but it is very apparent that this was only the first step to ending the war with the Darkness.
As a first chapter, it does a good job of introducing us to the various locations/factions in this world, and at least for me, it makes me eager to learn more. Which I think was the point.

I agree Destiny plot is almost as Bad as Titanfalls campaign.
-
I tell you what... Those DLC better have some story doozies.
-
The two dlc packs coming out already promised to have extensions to the campaign, they plan on running this game for ten years which means tons of dlc packs and tons of added campaign missions.
-
I think the point is that you are asking those questions. Thats exactly what Bungie wanted. It keeps us all guessing and talking and playing. Think of Destiny more like a TV show than a movie.
-
I agree. The story is awful and almost non existent. The gameplay was fun though until a few hours after lv 20.
-
Hey pal wait until you've finished the story before you talk about it :D
-
Why don't people get that this is just like sticking our toes in of the Destiny story? I'm also wondering why everyone assumes they'll have to pay through the nose to get more as dlc. I know we all have our fair share of experience with EA, but come on guys, Bungie wouldn't take notes from those guys. To see that everything isn't automatically pay for it dlc in the gaming industry, let's look at the game I was playing before Destiny. Diablo 3. Didn't they recently add treasure portals to the treasure realm recently? Was it paid dlc? I don't think so. Case not closed. Case dismissed. Come back later. Tl;dr: You guys be thinking worst case scenario. Everyone, calm down.

Edited by simplyburch: 9/14/2014 12:03:11 PMWould of been cool if your guardian...when he/she was brought back to life...had no idea who he/she was...where he/she came from...no memory or recollection of anything that happen to him/her prior to being revived...then...as the story progresses, he/she has flashbacks leading up to his/her downfall...showing your character in some badass armor...eh...I dunno, could of been a way to broaden the story maybe. Sounds cooler in my head >.<

The Story mode will be expanded upon in free content coming over the next 10 years, there is already a mission coming up soon in the latest bungie update. They set the foundation that they will build upon FREELY over time. (the two expansions are just their because activision required it) So the questions you have from the campaign will likely be answered eventually when more story missions are released. They basically just started with something to let you know "these are the basics of this universe, more to come soon." There are hints EVERYWHERE of some potentially interesting and fascinating stories that will be built upon soon. Yea, they probably should have included a LOT more to the story at launch, but at least they are freely adding more over time. Also, they made your character where you could easily assume its "you." Your character is supposed to be YOU in this universe instead of playing as some other protagonist with their own backstory which you may or may not like. You can give your guardian its own back story if you feel like it! So, in conclusion: There ARE more missions to evolve the story coming and you wont have to pay for ANY OF IT (except those two expansions but that is not ALL of the story. Just new side events I think.)

Edited by Missionboiii: 9/14/2014 5:20:23 AMI completely agree with you, I just wish they opened the story more. And especially coming from a Bungie game, this is the company that created Halo, rich with story. With that being said, I am not saying Destiny is bad but there were a lot of flaws with the game but it is still going to be a game I will play for quite along time.
-
While the voice acting and story seem far from perfect, I'm hoping that over the next few weeks/months things will start unfolding. If they're adding not just raids and strikes but legitimate story missions, who knows where this will take us. I mean bungie made halo, which in my memory, had very little story until say, the end of 2, and when they started adding goopy silly plot points later on in the newer games. Still a great series though. If they're deliberately pacing the story out and giving us bits at a time, good for them. Let all the haters go ahead and quit; for us who stay, we will "become legend" ;)
-
it's all about everybody $65 plus $35 for the 2 DLC. i played the full story mode and still don't know what the -blam!- is going, who's titan? who's hunter? who's warlock ? wtf, the game feels like a $20 arcade games, the game is not balanced out and it's not competitive at all. good game but it wont last for me.
-
I agree, completely.
-
Story is non-existent. World building and lore is weak. There are barely and characters, just vendor NPCs. The aliens all are bad and work for Darkness, so you know they are bad. They have no personality or anything to make them appear to be a civilized sentient species. All the enemies due is stand around and wait for you to appear so they can shoot at you. No personality or liveliness.
-
Who gives a rats ass about the story? What about the exploration we were promised? There's 5 zones in the game and you can only explore 4 of them and each one is the size of 1 large battlefield 4 map. If marketing involved telling the truth Destiny's slogan wouldn't be 'become legend' it would be 'become bored grinding the same boring 500,000,000 hp boss fights endlessly so you can get get phat loot that will enable you to take on the boring 500,000,000,000 hp bosses!'

Edited by Rancid: 9/12/2014 8:14:51 PMI agree the story, or lack thereof has been the biggest let down. They could have at least have shown a cut scene in the intro scene showing the brutality of our enemies...I mean give me a reason to hate them . Give the character a purpose and motivation. I'm sure the story will pick up and grow as the series progresses, but just like you would not want to read half of a novel before becoming emotionally engaged I would likewise rather the story have some legs from the start
